Our expectant waiting for Jesus requires vigilance in the form of marveling at God’s action, and at his surprises. Vigilance means paying attention to our neighbor in difficulty and allowing their need to draw us in, without waiting for him or her to ask us for help. May Mary, the Mother of hope, help us to turn our gaze towards the image of Jesus Christ, who draws all people to Him. Angelus Talk, Dec. 1, 2019

Many blessings on our Near West children who celebrated Reconciliation for the first time on December 8th. May they and their families continue to be gifted with the peace, love and mercy of Jesus!

From the loneliness of his prison cell John the Baptist asks of Jesus: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” The weeks before Christmas offer much to be joyous about, celebrating with family and friends, the glitter of seasonal decorations, the excitement of gift giving and receiving. But in our midst there are the lonely and neglected, the poor, the hospitalized, the wayward, the shut-ins. There are those who feel that they have no hope. To whom should they look? Discipleship in the Lord includes being good stewards of others. Are there those in our family, our neighborhood, our community to whom we can reach out to show them a sign of Christ’s presence in their midst?

At the beginning of the Church year, we celebrate the Rite of Acceptance into the Catechumenate with Marissa Pence, who looks forward to Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter. We also celebrate the Rite of Welcome into preparation for full communion with the Church, through Confirmation and Eucharist, with our baptized candidates, Amy Friedel, Carli Leone and Reed Remington. These Rites will be celebrated at St Malachi on Dec. 8th and at St Patrick on Dec. 14th. May our prayers and love support each of these candidates on their journey into the Mystery of Christ and His Catholic Church!

In today’s Gospel, we hear of the ten men afflicted with leprosy, & the one who glorifies God for being healed. It is a dramatic scene of gratitude. But in order for the miracle to happen in the first place, these men had to start walking in faith before their diseased conditions change one tiny bit. Good stewards of their faith realize that they cannot wait until their problems are over to start walking in faith. They praise God even in the darkest of nights, and in the worst of circumstances. Do we walk in faith, offering the Lord our gratitude even when we are in difficult circumstances
