Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“A strong driving wind.” “Tongues of fire.” What powerful signs for the disciples on that first Pentecost!
As God used these incredible signs to wake up their physical senses, the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples and they became consumed in a new way. As these external manifestations became internalized the disciples experienced an awareness of the Spirit’s power within themselves.
We likely didn’t experience those strong, driving winds or tongues of fire at our Confirmation, but the same Spirit came as we were sealed with this powerful grace!
The same Spirit – the very promise of God – continues to animate the Church and all her sons and daughters.
We celebrate this holy feast recalling those strong and consuming gifts bestowed upon each of us: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. How are each of these gifts at work in our personal lives? Have we called upon the Holy Spirit to strengthen each of them on a regular basis?
Imagine if everyone of us who professes faith in God made use of these gifts!
Lord, send forth Your Spirit in my life and set me on fire with the Gifts of Your Spirit. Holy Spirit, I invite You to take possession of my soul. Come Holy Spirit, come and transform my life.
Holy Spirit, I trust in You. May anything that hinders, or deceives, or paralyzes, or confuses our faith be blown away in that strong driving wind and consumed with flames of divine love!
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
