Annual Meeting follows Special 10:30AM Sunday Mass, 4/26/2015

Annual-Meeting-2012-1On Sunday April 26, St. Malachi Parish will hold its Annual Meeting. Please note: because of the meeting there will be only one Mass that day at 10:30AM and the Annual Meeting follows.  A meal will be served with time for fellowship.  All are enthusiastically encouraged to participate.

As Pope Francis exhorts in The  Joy of the  Gospel, that while God is the primary power in evangalization, we are called “to cooperate with Him who leads us on by the power of his Spirit.”

Annual-Meeting-2012-8In response, our Pastoral Council has taken steps to cooperate with God’s evangelization at St. Malachi.

At the Annual Meeting, both our Pastoral Staff and Lay Leaders will share with us about these efforts, and in particular, three task forces that were recently established: Building and Grounds; Organizational Structure; Community Action and Engagement. Watch this space for more information about each of these task forces.

Approximately 75 St. Malachi parishioners enjoyed Huevos Rancheros, and other fare, at the annual Lenten Potluck Brunch on Sunday, 2/22/2015 between the Masses.

During  brunch, our own St. Martha Owen, OSU and Sr. Rose Elizabeth, OSU, presented Reverse Mission:  Celebrating 50 years in El Salvador.   Sr. Rose Elizabeth recently returned after serving for several years in El Salvador.

Sr. Rose explained that while the government provides shoes to pre-school and elementary children, there is no government support for middle school and high school students.  At her suggestion, half of the funds we collect will be used to purchase shoes for the middle/high school students.  For every $30 collected one pair of shoes can be purchased.  Clean and well-fitting shoes not only provide important protection for the feet, but also are a source of self-esteem.

The second significant need is for dry shelter.  There are two seasons in El Salvador — the 6 month rainy season and the 6 month dry season.  Since most houses have dirt floors, when a roof leaks, the family lives in mud for 6 months.  Since homes are small, a corrugated metal roof can be provided for about $100.  For a family’s comfort, this is a high priority.

Consequently, our theme for this year is Help from Top to Bottom:  Roofs and Shoes in El Salvador.

Sr. Martha Owen, OSU, another veteran of the mission, spoke of the faith of the people in El Salvador and how they inspired her in her faith.

Small cardboard boxes are available at the doors of the church which can be used to make this almsgiving a family project.  $30 will make a difference for 1 child for an entire year.  Since most families have between 4 and 6 children (plus mother and father), a gift of $100 will provide comfort for 6 to 8 people for the entire rainy season.

Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed

Coffee Hour is looking for 4-6 additional/new people to volunteer after the 11:30 AM Mass; one Sunday every two months. Generally, two people work each assigned Sunday.  Volunteers work ONE Sunday every other month and they need to provide milk/creamer, napkins, five ounce disposable cups and a healthy juice for the children.  Doughnuts and the coffee are already provided.

Dwayne Drotar to become Executive Director of The Metanoia Project

Metanoia leaders Dwayne Drotar and Carl Cook spoke to about 30 St. Malachi parishioners on 1/18/2015 for Sunday Morning at St. Malachi. The Metanoia Project is a non-profit which uses the St. Malachi School building to operate a homeless shelter during the winter months.

At the presentation we were informed that Dwayne Drotar will soon be assuming the role of Executive Director and will be replacing Tim Walters.

Dwayne has a long history serving the homeless and other vulnerable populations. He has taught and/or coached sports at Urban Community School, St. Ignatius, Beaumont High School and St. Martin De Porres High School. He has served as Executive Director for the Salvation Army and 2100 Lakeside. He has a St. Malachi connection including serving as Program Director for St. Malachi Center, and early in his career he led the Rainbow Club (a Saturday program for area youth) here at St. Malachi where among other things he started the boxing program.

He will be working with the Metanoia Board with a visioning process to determine the next steps for the organization.

Carl Cook, Program Manager, explained the current operations of Metanoia. They serve the “Unsheltered Population” in Cleveland and are open nights (6PM to 7AM) Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. In addition, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday they open on “Critical Cold Days” when the temperature falls to below 20 degrees.

Common reasons that people are homeless include issues with mental health, substance abuse, fear and pride or a combination of these. Metanoia provides a meal, various services, overnight shelter and perhaps most importantly the opportunity to form relationships. Their aim is to improve the quality of life for these individuals.

An important component of their program is a 6 week night school for the homeless called “The Courage To Change.” During this program participants are invited to look deeply into themselves so that a desire to change is aroused. The program includes both a classroom component and field experience. Now in its third year, many of the graduates of this program have been able to become employed and find a place to live.

Second Saturday Supper at Minh Anh 1/10/2015

On January 10, 2015 thirty-one St. Malachi parishioners gathered at Minh Anh restaurant for the Second Saturday Supper and enjoyed fresh, well-prepared Vietnamese cuisine.  This was a great showing which filled the restaurant.  Anyone who has suggestions for next month’s restaurant please call Chris Dusek at (216) 631-6961 or acamdm@sbcglobal.net.
