Dear Brothers and Sisters in the United States, I have witnessed with great concern the disturbing unrest in your country in the past few days, following the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd. My friends, we cannot tolerate or turn a blind eye to racism or exclusion in any form, yet claim to defend the sacredness of every human life. At the same time, we have to realize that the violence of recent nights is self-destructive and self-defeating. Nothing is gained by violence, and so much is lost. Today I join the Church of Minneapolis and St. Paul, and all the United States, in praying for the repose of the soul of George Floyd, and all those others who have lost their lives as a result of the sin of racism. Let us pray for the consolation of their grieving families and friends, and let us pray for the reconciliation and peace for which we yearn. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, pray for all those who work for peace and justice in the United States and throughout the world.

This Sunday afternoon, on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation with our St Patrick and St Malachi catechumens and candidates at a special Mass at St Malachi. Let us remember in our prayers our two catechumens who will celebrate Baptism, Confirmation and Communion—Marissa Pence, our St. Pat’s parishioner and Christopher Horvath, St Pat’s parishioner and UCS student. Also, let us remember our candidates for full communion in the Catholic Church, who will make a Profession of Faith and celebrate Confirmation and Communion—Carli Leone and Reed Remington, both St Pat’s parishioners, and Amy Friedel, our St Malachi parishioner. May you and your families be richly blessed, especially after this time of prolonged waiting and anticipation of the joy of communion with Christ the bridegroom!

Flag Day is celebrated every year on June 14 to commemorate the date on which the flag of the United States was first raised. The earliest reference to a flag day being marked in America was in 1861, when the city of Hartford, Connecticut, is recorded as having held a “programme of patriotic order” on June 14. Although officially declared in 1916, a National Flag Day was not established by an Act of Congress until 1946.

One day, your children will leave home. Sadly, for most young Catholics that means abandoning their faith. But it doesn’t have to if you impact their faith now. Get started with a Holy Family Fest—a God-centered family vacation—at Catholic Familyland®. Here, each member of your family can encounter Jesus Christ in a way that makes the Faith come alive. Visit AFC.org to learn more.

Many of our parishioners have decided that remaining at home and delaying their return to Mass is in the best interest of their health. If you are one who has decided to postpone your return and would like a copy of the bulletin mailed to you, please call or email the rectory at 216-861-5343 or rectory@stmalachi.org and a weekly bulletin will be mailed to your home.
