At that meeting the entire council will be led through a discernment process to select the new leadership team.

Bishop Edward Malesic Appointed Bishop of Cleveland
With warm hearts we welcome Bishop Edward Malesic to Cleveland. He will be installed as our twelfth bishop on Monday, September 14, 2020 at St. John’s Cathedral replacing Bishop Perez who left Cleveland in January to become Archbishop of the Philadelphia Archdiocese. Bishop Malesic comes to us from Greensburg where he has been the Bishop since 2015. At his press conference on Tuesday, Bishop Malesic said “I feel humble to be chosen as the next shepherd of the diocese.”
Pastor’s Column 7.5.2020 Racism Bigotry
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Patrick and Saint Malachi,
As many are aware, I have spent the past few weeks meeting with a number of our parishioners, leaders, and members of law enforcement regarding the recent murder of George Floyd. Over thirty hours of in-person conversations, on-line communication, and written correspondence have given me a welcomed array of perspective and creative suggestions as we address racism and related injustices. Regardless of the different angles taken, the perspectives offered unanimously condemn racism and bigotry in any form. Of course, reactions and attitudes toward demonstrations of social unrest vary as do proposed solutions floating through the halls of legislators, offices of leaders, and voices in public square. Many shared their personal feelings and reactions to this current wave while others shared their very personal stories and experiences.
In light of these encounters, I believe four essential components present themselves for consideration. First, an opportunity for open and authentic dialogue is paramount. How this is done will require creativity in our current social-distancing environment. Second, this dialogue needs to be informed and rooted in relationships of trust with authentic respect for one another. Third, if this is going to bear fruit within the parish, our understanding of this subject – or any area of social teaching—needs to start with a Catholic context. What does Church teaching offer us as a starting point and how does it interact with a diverse array of perspectives? What within our tradition already lends itself to promoting justice and racial equality? Fourth, a sustainable plan is needed for us as this issue moves out of the media spotlight and the next hot-button issue finds its way into the headlines. Reaction is one thing but our thoughtful and enduring Christian response is what really matters.
Therefore, I will be asking members of both Parish Councils, Parish Staffs, and other individuals within our communities to join me for an introductory conversation in the near future. It is my hope that this will lead to opportunities to engage more parishioners in the conversation and to take steps for constructive action within our parish community.
This weekend, as we give thanks to Almighty God for the gift of freedom, may we invoke divine assistance and respond to the call of promoting the common good so that every person may enjoy liberty and justice.
Yours in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the USA,
Fr. Gurnick
Welcome Stella Maris
We extend a very warm welcome to Stella Maris as they prepare the former St. Malachi convent building as a residence for women. Stella Maris expands its service to those in recovery and we are proud that some of our space can be used for their vital mission. Over the next couple of months we will see some contractors and extra dumpsters as they make the necessary improvements. This will include their usage of the parking lot as vehicles and construction-related equipment is present. More information will follow in the weeks and months ahead.
Bible Study on Mary Begins 7/8/2020
All are welcome to an online Bible Study on Mary, led by acclaimed scripture scholar Dr. Brant Pitre of the Augustine Institute, and based on his book, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of Mary.
Have you ever questioned Catholic teaching on Mary? Have you asked questions, like, why does the Church teach that Mary was a lifetime virgin? Why do we call Mary Queen of Heaven and Earth? Why do Catholics reverence Mary? What is the biblical justification for any of this? If so, this is the series for you! You will be amazed and inspired.
Here is the format:
- Each week, you view a 35 minute video on the Formed platform. You will see the presentation by Dr. Brant Pitre.
- Each Wednesday, from 6:30PM to 8:00PM, join St. Malachi and St. Patrick parishioners on a Google Meet on-line discussion meeting.
Here are the sessions, which will start on Wednesday, July 8, 2020:
Week 1: The New Eve
Week 2: The New Ark
Week 3: Mother of the Messiah
Week 4: The Queen Mother
Week 5: The Perpetual Virgin
Week 6: Mother of Sorrows
Week 7: The New Rachel
Week 8: Questions and Answers
To register, of for any questions, please email Parish Catechetical Leader Stephanie Pritts at stephanie.p@stmalachi.org.
Afraid or unsure of technology? We will help you.
Parish Bulletins
Many of our parishioners have decided that remaining at home and delaying their return to Mass is in the best interest of their health. If you are one who has decided to postpone your return and would like a copy of the bulletin mailed to you, please call or email the rectory at 216-861-5343 or rectory@stmalachi.org and a weekly bulletin will be mailed to your home.
MAL Administrator’s Column 6.7.2020
Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Malachi,
As we had a beautiful weekend on May 30th and 31st, it was so evident that many were ready to return to public worship. It was wonderful to see all of those familiar faces, even as mouths were covered with masks. As we continue to gradually resume our public liturgies, I take this opportunity to thank members of our staff and parish volunteers who have spent tireless hours in preparing the church for our return – and for those who come to clean after each liturgy. Thank you!
Now that we are stepping into this new normal, I offer a few reminders for the sake of everyone’s safety:
- The expectation is that everyone is wearing a mask (with the exception for those described by the CDC);
- Social Distancing is the key to our success in helping to prevent the spread – inside and outside of the church;
- Entry will remain through the Main Doors; the collection basket is available as you enter;
- Upon entering, please sit anywhere there is a marked space (secured on the end of each pew). All other areas have a sign that reads, “Do not sit here.”
- While it’s tempting and certainly understandable to want to visit with one another, we need to ask everyone to remain in their places once they’ve entered the church. Otherwise, the aisles are blocked and social distancing is impossible.
- For Holy Communion, please respond AMEN and then remove your mask. Return your mask once you’ve received the Holy Eucharist. The ministers will continue to distribute at each seating area.
- When Mass has concluded, please WAIT for an usher or other volunteer to dismiss your row. Exit only through the front side doors. Parish bulletins are available on your way out of the church.
For those remaining home at this time, please know we continue to remember you in prayer. Please continue to check out our website for important news and information.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Gurnick
St. Malachi Emergency Measures
TO: All Saint Malachi Staff, Volunteers, and General Parish Community
FR: Fr. Michael Gurnick, Administrator RE: Emergency Measures at This Time – Effective Wednesday, 18 March 2020
Due to the incredible demands being placed on everyone due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) our priority must be on safety of all people: staff, volunteers, parishioners, and those we serve everyday through our charity-related activities. As part of the safety protocols, our dedicated but small maintenance staff is required to disinfect all areas of our campus exposed to visitors. Guided by the principle of “social distancing,” we also need to consider the safety of all who are employed here, our volunteers, and our liturgical ministers.
Therefore, effective on Wednesday, March 18th, the following measures will be taken until further notice:
LITURGICAL LIFE, RCIA, and ALL FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS
All Masses/liturgies, by decree of the Bishops of Ohio, have ceased effective 16 March 2020. Please check out our Sunday bulletin on line this Friday for some creative ways to gather in spirit for the Day of the Lord.
Any Baptisms or Weddings are to be postponed unless there is a pastoral urgency. Special protocols apply.
is recommended that the Rite of Committal take place at the cemetery in a timely fashion with a Memorial Mass celebrated after this health crisis has passed. I will offer a special Mass in private upon news of any parishioner’s death.
Communion to the Sick is suspended at all nursing homes and other healthcare facilities, including to people’s individual homes. The celebration of the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum to the Dying will be administered at any time, provided we are not restricted by any civil regulation. Special protocols apply.
Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). At this time, confessions are limited to being in danger of death, per diocesan directives. Confessions are not able to be administered via technology of any kind.
2459 Washington Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44113 · Phone 216-861–5343 · Fax 216–861–5343
- E–Mail rectory@stmalachi.org • Website: stmalachi.org
All Faith Formation / Adult Enrichment Programming is suspended until further notice, including those activities with our partner parishes. Many of these groups have already been notified.
CHARITY & OTHER OUTREACH-BASED ACTIVITIES
Back Door Ministry will continue with limited hours of operation (9:00am until 1:00pm) and new procedures are in place for the protection of everyone involved. Because of the new social distancing directives, only staff will be working with this ministry until further notice.
Monday Night Meals will continue with a revised service procedure. No indoor access to the general public. Meals will be served to take out at the Washington Street Door only. We are asking that those volunteers who are especially at-risk immediately cease activity with this ministry. Anyone under 18 is restricted from offering to assist at this time.
We are working with the Metanoia Project leadership regarding the overnight shelter accommodations. Currently, their staff members are working with city and county personnel as they make provisions. We intend to honor our contractual relationship which concludes 15 April 2020; however their model will shift in accord with the current government directives. Please contact Metanoia directly for additional information.
Due to Malachi House’s mission and their status as a regulated facility, all non–essential staff and visitors are restricted from entering. Emergency pastoral care will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
The Malachi Center is suspending their after school program until further notice and they are trimming other services. Please contact them directly for additional information.
Alcoholics Anonymous and other support programs are currently being addressed with individual group leaders. We realize the positive impact these regular meetings have for our friends in recovery. However, each group must comply with current government guidelines at the time of each meeting (which may change daily). Regulations include capacity in attendance.
At this time, all other groups or organizations serving food or who are a source for gathering substantial numbers of individuals outside of normal weekly hours of operation, are temporarily suspended from our parish campus, again, for the safety of all involved. This includes the Saturday Morning Breakfast program.
THE RECTORY OFFICES ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Staff members will be working mostly from home with some individuals stopping in each day to address routine business such as voicemails, general correspondence, and financial operations. Please call or email if you need assistance as we will be monitoring both. Because the rectory building itself is a home, it is restricted to Fr. Walters and other essential personnel only, no exceptions, please!
ALL OTHER ACTIVITIES ON CAMPUS
To honor the efforts of our local, state, and federal government’s plan to prevent the further spread of COVID – 19, all other activities are suspended until further notice. I understand that these measures may appear extreme but we need to maintain the safety of our community members and those we serve. This notification will soon be followed by ideas for maintaining our communal sense of prayer and we remain committed to serving our sisters and brothers who rely on the many services provided here. Please know that I will be offering daily Mass for our parish family. Thank you for your kind understanding, prayerful support, and cooperation as we make it – and we WILL make it – through these challenging days ahead. Should additional government or diocesan directives be ordered we will modify any and all current plans listed here. Keep in touch at: stmalachi.org.
May the Lord bless us and keep us all in His tender care and mercy as we peacefully and joyfully bear witness to the Gospel of Light and Hope.
