Retreat for men
Sponsored by The
Community of St. Malachi
and
St. Malachi Parish
October 21-23, 2005
St. Joseph
Christian Life Center
18485 Lake Shore Blvd
Cleveland, OH 44119
About the Retreat Leader
The retreat will be guided by Br. Joseph Kilikevice, O.P., a Dominican
friar and interfaith retreat director who has been offering Male Spirit
retreats for men since 1986.
He is the founder and director of the SHEM Center for Interfaith
Spirituality. The spirit of the SHEM Center is to create peace in the
world through the healing of religious conflict as prescribed by the
Second Vatican Council.
SHEM is an Aramaic word expressing the radiance, splendor, and beauty of
the Creator found everywhere in creation. This word aptly expresses the
concept universally held by the religions of the world, that God's light
is present in all beings.
For more information on the SHEM Center, see www.shemcenter.org.

Caravan of Respect
A Male Spirit Interfaith Weekend Retreat
Somewhere deep in the recesses of our male spirits we hold the treasures of courage,
faithfulness, endurance, respect, brotherhood, tenderness, love, grief, strength, friendship, joy,
wonder, intuition and much more.
To travel into this place deep within our male souls we must leave behind an image of manhood we
have inherited that says we must always be strong and self-reliant.
"Stay with a caravan. By yourself, you'll get
a hundred times more tired and fall behind."
Jelialuddin Rumi - 13th Century Sufi Mystic and poet |
The traditional image of the independent, go-italone kind of guy doesn't really work for us.
We know this because workaholism, exhaustion, boredom, depression, and a host of other afflictions
tell us so. In fact, men in the US on average die 5 years earlier than women.
The women in our lives make friends with each other easily. We, however, often abandon our need for male
companionship and give into a tough-it-out-alone way of being a man, denying ourselves the joys and
pleasures of life that are our birthright.
This retreat is about men caring for men. It is about caring enough to provide a safe, respectful,
Confid-ential and sacred space for us to tell our stories without being judged, a place where our
inner wounds can begin to heal and where new directions can be taken. In this space we will
celebrate one another's fears, struggles and triumphs with rituals that bring us together in
strength, beauty and interdependence.

our need
for male companionship. |
Rite of Initiation
Young men with their fathers, guardians, or other significant adult males
are invited to inquire about optional rites of initiation or of passage
during this weekend retreat.
The Ceremony of Initiation is offered to young men, generally ages 17 to
24, who are taking their first steps into adulthood and are being given
its privileges and responsibilities. This ceremony is focused upon the
issues of intimacy, friendship, sexuality, career choice, and the
spiritual values needed to take one's place within an honorable lineage of
maleness.
The four male archetypal energies of King, Warrior, Lover and Magician are
presented to the young man to be held in sacred trust for the rest of his
life. The King is responsible for upholding justice and mercy in the
world. The Warrior defends others who may need protecting and defending.
The Lover is the one who appreciates and responds to the beauty he sees in
others and in the world. The Magician brings understanding and creativity
in solving life's problems. The young man also receives a mentor with whom
he can consider and reflect upon the important issues of being a man in
today's world.
An Interfaith Experience
Forty years ago, Pope Paul VI signed and promulgated the document,
"On the Church's Relation to Non-Christian Religions" in which
Catholics were mandated to heal the divisions between us and the other
religions of the world. In keeping with this teaching, this retreat will
tap into the wisdom, sacred phrases, chant and dance that honors a
diversity of traditions. One does not have
to give up one's own faith tradition in order to be blessed and enriched
by the tradition, of others.
All faith traditions, spiritual paths, ages, and sexual orientations are
welcome and will be respected.
