HELP ST. MALACHI CENTER & SAVE TAXES!
Between now & December 31, 2007, taxpayers over age 70 1/2 can avoid paying income tax on IRA distributions of up to $100,000 by donating them directly from tax-deferred IRAs to qualified charitable organizations (such as a church or other tax exempt organizations such as St. Malachi Center). What this could mean: if your required minimum distribution is $10,000 and you are in the 15% tax bracket, you could donate $10,000 directly to St. Malachi Center & NOT pay $1,500 in federal income tax. Please note that amounts excluded from income under this provision cannot be taken into account to determine charitable contributions deduction. Consult your financial advisor for details.

NOTES FROM CLUSTER MEETING OF JULY 11TH 2007

Community of St. Malachi, St. Malachi, St. Patrick, and St. Wendelin

Cluster Planning and Coordination Team Members:

Community of St. Malachi: Fr. Tony Schueger, James Connell, Robert Simoneau, Karen Duffy, and Kay Vine

St. Malachi: Fr. Tony Schueger, Michael French, Gregory Gacka, Mary Jane Treichel, and Shelia Berry

St. Partrick: Fr. Mark Di Nardo, Maureen Bihn, Tony Coyne, Bill Merriman, and Marge Thomas

St. Wendelin: Fr. Jerry Lajack, Jim Armstrong, Maryann Fekete, Colette Peters, and Chris Piatak

Purpose of the meeting:

Create a climate of prayer and discernment, get acquainted, build trust, review the cluster planning process, expectations, and timeline, and plan upcoming meetings

I. Welcome & Opening Prayer

The prayer, “No Longer Stranger” was used and the following questions and reflections were expressed:

Q1. What are your greatest fears and anxieties moving into a cluster relationship?

-A loss of identity

-The suddenness of the directive (change from the original directive from Bp.)

-People fear loss of sacred space

-Believe it is a "done deal" and these cluster groups are "going through the motion."

-The CPC will forget their purpose (to promote God's word)

-People will leave the "Church" over this

-This group needs to model what we want people to do and be positive

Q2. What does this cluster have the potential of doing that would build a positive vision and really make a difference in the lives of the people in this area?

-On-going communication

-Keep message positive

-The "church" needs to Become/Continue to be an "anchor" for the neighborhood

-Be a strong welcoming presence in the area

-Model the community with worship activities

II. A video tape from Bishop Lennon provided a discussion and the following comments/reflections:

- Mission of Christ involves pastoral care for all God’s people.

- Few Churches in the cit y are under 75 or 100 years old

- The new approaches are not just in response to demographics but also to doing things better. A matter of improving quality rather than bemoaning quantity.

- The complexion of the community changes also.

- Perhaps a hidden message that the whole cluster has to address is how better to meet the challenge posed by the Mass attendance drop from 56% to 29% of the total Catholic population diocese-wide.

III. Future Meeting dates:

The CPC teams will rotate meetings. (all meeting will be from 7:00-9:00pm).

  • Monday, August 20, 2007 at St. Wendelin
  • Thursday, September 20, 2007 at St. Malachi
  • Wednesday, October 10, 2007 at St. Patrick
  • Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at St. Wendelin.

The CPC team agreed to include a tour of each church and its facilities along with a list of ministries. This will begin at the next meeting at St. Wendelin.

The August 20, 2007 meeting will include a discernment of a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary, and Communication Liaison Person.
