BLACK & NATIVE AMERICAN COLLECTION
Next weekend is the annual appeal for the Black and Native American Missions in the United
States. Funds are needed to continue present evangelization programs & even more, to continue assistance to parishes devastated by hurricanes to rebuild their programs. Many places lost everything; even 500 days later, much has yet to be rebuilt, ministries & evangelization programs restarted. There will be a second collection at all the Masses.

ASH WEDNESDAY: LENT BEGINS
Lent begins this week. On Ash Wednesday, there will be Mass and distribution of ashes at 7 AM, Noon & 7:30 PM. Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast & Abstinence (see below).
LENTEN FAST & ABSTINENCE
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast and Abstinence for Catholics from their 18th through 59th birthday. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat for all those over 14 years of age What does “fasting” mean? Generally it means eating only one “full” or regular meal during the day, making other meals smaller & eliminating “snacks” (except for beverages). People who have special medical conditions, fragile health or other serious reasons are NOT REQUIRED to fast. In fact, the obligation to care for one's health may require them not to fast. Why fasting? By the end of the first Century A.D., Christians fasted on Fridays & during the 40 days of Lent to honor Christ's Passion & our own hunger for God. An article says, “Considered from this perspective, compulsory fasting & abstinence, practiced regularly, routinely & in common, was a … identification [by the Church] with the poor and hungry, with those who know themselves to be needy before God because they were needy among the human family … the Lenten trilogy of prayer, fasting & almsgiving is both fundamental & structural.” (Eamon Duffy, “Fasting: Our Lost Rite,” The Tablet, Jan. 31, 2004)
