140th Anniversary Mass Homily

St. Malachi Parish, November 6, 2005

Bishop Anthony M. Pilla

Good morning. I am very happy to be with you on this important anniversary of your founding. 140 years is a significant portion of our diocesan history. From its days as the "port parish" through the fire in the forties, to its present day work on behalf of the poor here in the Angle - it has all been a light shining in the darkness leading travelers to the compassion and power of Christ.
I want to say `thank you' to all of you and all of those you represent, your ancestors in your families and your ancestors in faith. Your faithfulness and generosity has allowed the gospel to be that beacon and refuge for untold numbers of men, women and children nearly a century and a half.
The Gospel for this Sunday's mass is an appropriate text for us to be handed on this occasion. The parable of the ten virgins is ultimately a call to preparedness and attention. Those are two very different characteristics. Both of them are essential to carrying out the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the world. From your history and from my knowledge of your ministry and witness to this day, I think it is safe to say that for 140 years Saint Malachi has been both well prepared to offer the Good News of Jesus Christ to others and remarkably attentive to the opportunities to extend the Kingdom of God.
You have been well-prepared indeed. You have cherished and nurtured the Word of God, the Good News. You have worked to preserve and make meaningful the celebration of the Liturgy, especially the Eucharist. You have sacrificed so that the teaching of the faith and education might be available. You have been a rich and important channel for much-needed resources and services to the poor. You have, like those wise servants in the gospel - kept yourselves well-fueled for the work of the Kingdom. God has been praised in all of that and you have been a blessing.
But all the preparation in the world will not bring about the Kingdom if the servants of God are not attentive to the opportunity, awake to the presence of Christ in the world. We have all witnessed the fact that well-prepared people, well-stocked with resources, are blissfully unaware of the needs of the poor, the hungers of the human family, the desperation of many hearts. Not you!
For 140 years you have made the education of children, poor children, a priority. For 140 years you have welcomed the stranger - kept your lamp burning brightly through the night to guide and attract those who were away from home. For decades you have been creative and industrious in connecting with the hungry, homeless, alcoholic and addicted, the jobless and discouraged. You have a well-honed eye, sensitive to the needs even of the dying poor. You have been attentive to the presence of Christ in His most disturbing and surprising disguise.
I know, therefore, that the Wedding Feast of the Lamb has begun for you. All of this preparation and all of the attention to the presence of Christ has been a blessing for you. Yes, you have selflessly served, but you have also entered the feast here and now. I trust and believe that the Lord rewards his faithful servants with eternal life - but I want to emphasize that this eternity has begun in your hearts, in your midst and you are filled with joy. Living a just and Christ-like life is its own reward. You have done that- so let the celebration begin.

Because for 140 years:

  • For 140 years now this parish has been rooted in the love of God and neighbor. Here saint and sinner alike have found welcome, courage and even challenge.
  • For 140 years, children and adults have been welcomed into the heart of the Church through the cleansing water of Baptism. They have been anointed and gifted by the power of the Spirit. They have received the holiest food and drink possible at this table.
  • For 140 Years, women and men, children and adults have been reconciled to God and one another. They have been anointed with a balm that heals the sin-sick soul. They have been married, they have lived single lives, they have entered religious life, and have become priests.
  • For 140 Years this parish has not only welcomed saint and sinner, but it has aided both in going home to God. From womb to tomb, this parish has been involved in the extreme and lavish care of its people; in sacraments, education, social outreach, in liturgy, laughter and tears.

For 140 years you have been well-prepared to do the work of the Kingdom. For 140 years you have brought that preparation to bear upon the neediest in our community. As you know, such fidelity and wisdom doesn't happen by itself. Good Church ministry demands good leadership. I am sure you want to join me in remembering all the priests, deacons, lay and religious who have served you in this long history. In particular the Ursuline Sisters who have been here from nearly the beginning. And, of course, let's thank and acknowledge the man who, in the last generation, has become synonymous with St. Malachi, Fr. Paul Hritz.   And I know the future looks promising with the leadership of your current pastor, Fr. Tony Schuerger. "Tony and Paul, I am not only grateful for the leadership you offer here, but also in the dedicated service you offer in so many ways to the wider church for many years."
May God bless you all on this important occasion. May this anniversary be not only a time of looking back and thanking God for what has been - but also a call to look toward the future. May the years to come keep the light of St. Malachi shining brightly so that the Gospel might be proclaimed to all those in need.
