ST. MALACHI CHURCH, CATHOLIC EDUCATION AND URBAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL
From the very beginning, education has been a priority for St. Malachi. When St. Malachi was founded in 1865, Fr. James Molony, the founding pastor, began a school. When the parish began, classes where held in old St. Mary on the Flats on Columbus Rd. After the original church was built, Fr. Molony purchased a public school building on W. 25 St. (the site, on north of the bridge near Lakeview Estates, is now a CEI substation). In 1885, the current school building was erected; the W. 25 St. building became the boys' school, taught by the Christian Brothers, and the current school became the girls' school under the Ursuline Sisters. In 1916, both boys and girls programs were combined in the current school under the Leadership of the Ursulines.

St. Malachi School - Class of 1942

St. Malachi parish and school endured the challenges of the Depression, World War II, the church burning down, building the new church and neighborhood changes.
By 1968, enrollment at both St. Malachi and nearby St. Patrick had declined. Rather than simply merge or close, people saw a new opportunity. Parishioners and priests, the Ursulines, community leaders and activists came together to create a new school to provide the urban child, both Catholic and non-Catholic, with a quality education in a diverse, multiracial, multicultural setting.
The PM Foundation was established as an independent non-profit to finance and operate Urban Community School, with the leadership of the Ursuline Sisters.   URBAN COMMUNITY SCHOOL
St. Malachi and St. Patrick provided their school building, paying the building expenses and operation. In 1976, St. Wendelin merged with Urban Community School and became the second campus when the St. Patrick school building closed. In 1987, Urban Community School was the first school in Cleveland to receive the Excellence in Education Award from the U.S. Department of Education. In 2000, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to expand the school to serve more children. Currently, the new building is under construction. Urban Community School will open the 2005-2006 school year in the new building.

A SAD FAREWELL
Today it is 2 months that I have been at St. Malachi. For me it has been a wonderful time to acquire a lot experience of pastoral life. I have been meeting with people who live their faith. Now is the time say a big “Thank you”. Thank you for your hospitality, generosity, friendship, encouragement and for showing me a real parish's community life. I felt very much at home here.
My gratitude belong also to Fr. Tony who was for me an example of life with Christ. I know that a parish is made from people who live there. And you are a good example of what a parish should be.
May God bless you, your families and St. Malachi parish.
