HAT IS A CONCLAVE AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
A conclave is the assembly of cardinals which elects a new pope. It also refers to the place where they meet. The term conclave comes from Latin, meaning "with a key." In the 13th Century, the election of Gregory X lasted several years. After he was elected, Gregory wrote specific rules governing papal elections. The cardinals were to live and work in a common, closed room (the conclave) free from outside influences. If they failed to elect a new pope within a certain time period, their food rations were cut.
They were not paid nor could they conduct any other business until the election was finished. The rules worked well, but when suspended by later popes, elections again lasted several years.
In 1996, Pope John Paul II wrote the directives governing the current conclave. Only cardinals under age 80 are eligible to vote by secret ballot (117 Cardinals). No communication outside the conclave is permitted (the Sistine Chapel will be "swept" for electronic listening devices and no cell phones, faxes or internet is permitted in the conclave). A two-thirds majority is required in the initial balloting, dropping to a simple majority in later votes, if the conclave appears deadlocked. There are specific rules for how the balloting and counting is conducted; every detail is anticipated. One innovation: the election of the new Pope will be announced by ringing the bells of St. Peter's, in addition to the traditional white smoke.

Prayer for election of a new pope Lord God, you are our eternal shepherd and guide. In your mercy grant your Church a shepherd who will walk in your ways and whose watchful care will bring us your blessings. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
