DIVINE MERCY” SUNDAY
AND THE EASTER SEASON

The Second Sunday of Easter completes the great Easter Octave. In Jubilee Year 2000, the Congregation for Divine Worship proclaimed, “Throughout the world, the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trails that humankind will experience in the years to come.” On this Sunday each year, we read John's Gospel account of the risen Jesus' appearance to the disciples, his gift of the Spirit with the power to “bind and loose” sin. Today's Gospel reminds us that the saying, “To err is human; to forgive divine” is much more than a cliché; it is a profound truth. As human beings, we are much more inclined to retaliate than to forgive injury. The power to forgive comes from God. The act of forgiveness is a manifestation of the mercy which is divine.
The Easter Season lasts 50 days - from Easter Sunday to Pentecost. One of the Church Fathers, St. Athanasius, described the Easter Season as “one great Sunday” during which we continue to proclaim “Alleluia! Christ is risen!” As one source put it, “The great fifty days … are not an unwelcome, unrealistic obligation to 'party on,' even if we don't feel like it, but an invitation to explore more deeply 'the weather of the heart,' to awaken our memory of God's presence and power in our lives” (Nathan Mitchell, “The Blessed Pentecost”)

Thank You!

Many people have commented about how beautiful the Holy Week and Easter liturgies were and how beautiful the church looks. A special word of thanks to all who have shared their gifts, especially Charlene McElwee, our liturgical-music minister, Kay Vine, who coordinates the environment/decorating, the planning teams, those who clean and decorate, musicians, cantors, choir members, servers, liturgical ministers. Your presence, your gifts, your prayer and hard work helped beautify our liturgy and our church for Holy Week & Easter. God Bless!

Social Action can be Contagious
 - April collection

We are grateful for the volunteers who minister to the homeless men and women who come to St. Malachi Center for the opportunity to take a shower on a regular basis. The individuals who run THE SHOWER PROGRAM provide a service that many of us take for granted. There is a need for consumable supplies, especially spray deodorant and small bars of soap. Shampoo, Vaseline, razors, toothbrushes & toothpaste, duffel bags & white socks are also needed. Can you donate an item to support this effort? A box for your donation is in the front of the church.
Thank you for your March donations. The MALACHI HOUSE staff and volunteers appreciate your donations of items from their wish list.
For more information contact: Lois Westerkamp, (440) 331-3705 or Joyce Geib, (216) 521-4252
The Social Action Commission meets the second Sunday of each month at 10:30 in the church hall. All are welcome.
