THE ORDER OF DEACON: PART IV
By their ordination, deacons are members of the clergy. As such, deacons in the United States generally wear a clergy shirt with a Roman collar when involved in their official ministry. To help people recognize them as Deacons rather than priests, most deacons have taken to wearing a small cross with a deacon stole (which is worn “sideways” from left shoulder to right hip) on the lapel of their suit coat. The official title of a deacon is “Reverend Mister” and in conversation, a deacon is addressed as “Deacon.”
During the rite of ordination, the Bishop presents the newly-ordained deacon with the Gospel book and instructs him: “Receive the book of the Gospels, whose herald you are. Believe what you read. Preach what you believe. Practice what you preach.” In these simple sentences, the bishop summarizes the essence of the deacon's ministry. From the earliest days, deacons have lived these words. In their wisdom, the Bishops of Vatican II saw the need for diaconal ministry as a separate and distinct Order, one which needed to be restored to the life of the Church. A recent article noted: “It is exactly this presence in the world that gives the diaconate its unique sacramental identity. The deacon is one who is called to bring the ministry of the church - its mission of charity and justice - to the workplace, to the community, to the neighborhood and to all the places in which he lives and interacts with others daily.” (Joseph DeGrocco, “The Ministry of Deacon,” America, March 22, 2004, pg. 20)

Blessed are we today for the ministry of deacons.

THE PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE

ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECT UPDATE
Superior Viaduct (the one-way street that runs in front of the County Engineers building) is now permanently closed. Vermont (the street next to the church) is now the only way in or out. At present, work continues adding a tree lawn next to the sidewalk along the church and making a regular sidewalk along the convent. When the work is complete, there will be a continuous sidewalk from the driveway to the corner of W. 25 St. We have permission to park in the lot on Detroit across the street from Massimo di Milano. We will continue to keep you informed. Thank you for your patience and continued cooperation to make this as trouble free as possible for all!

The program begins with wide ranging selections of psalms of joy and comfort, and the second half celebrates the simple joys in life...friends, food and love. Closing the concert will be selections from the beloved musical about orphan boys, in old London, “Oliver.” We hope many of you will be able to join us for this special program.
