DIVINE MERCY” SUNDAY
AND THE EASTER SEASON

The Second Sunday of Easter completes the great Easter Octave. During the Jubilee Year 2000, the Congregation for Divine Worship proclaimed, “Throughout the world, the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trails that humankind will experience in the years to come.” Each year on this Sunday, we read John's Gospel account of the risen Jesus' appearance to the disciples, his gift of the Spirit with the power to “bind and loose” sin. Today's Gospel reminds us that the saying, “To err is human; to forgive divine” is much more than a familiar cliché; it is a profound truth. As human beings, we are much more inclined to retaliate than to forgive injury. The power to forgive comes from God. The act of forgiveness is a manifestation of the mercy which is divine.
The Easter Season lasts 50 days - from Easter Sunday to Pentecost. One of the Church Fathers, St. Athanasius, described the Easter Season as “one great Sunday” during which we continue to proclaim “Alleluia! Christ is risen!” As one source put it, “The great fifty days … are not an unwelcome, unrealistic obligation to 'party on,' even if we don't feel like it, but an invitation to explore more deeply 'the weather of the heart,' to awaken our memory of God's presence and power in our lives” (Nathan Mitchell, “The Blessed Pentecost”)

Thank You

Many people have commented about how beautiful the Holy Week and Easter liturgies were and how beautiful the church looked. A special word of thanks to all who have shared their gifts, especially Charlene McElwee, our liturgical-music minister, Kay Vine, who coordinates the environment/decorating, the planning teams, those who to clean and decorate, musicians, cantors, choir members, servers, liturgical ministers. Your presence, your gifts, your prayer and hard work helped beautify our liturgy and our church for Holy Week & Easter.
God Bless!

Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe."  I am the First and the Last, the One who lives. Once I was dead but now I live forever.
Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!"   -Jn 20:27-28

SPRING-SUMMER ROAD CONSTRUCTION NEAR
ST. MALACHI

A road-construction project for West 25th and Detroit, Vermont and Superior Viaduct is underway and will last into August. It is a major project, which will involve reconfiguring the W 25th and Detroit intersection, repaving W 25th Street in front of the Church, closing Superior Viaduct, widening Vermont and creating new parking in front of the County Engineers building. Within a few weeks, it will affect parking availability, especially on Vermont, next to the church. We will keep you informed through announcements, flyers and the bulletin about the stages of the project as it unfolds. We ask your patience and cooperation to make this as easy and trouble free as possible for everyone.
