Advent Waiting

New Yorkers have, by necessity, made a fine art of waiting. There is a booth on Times Square that sells tickets to Broadway shows for half-price several hours before curtain time. Double lines snake around the booth in all kinds of weather. Vendors sell refreshments, street musicians entertain and total strangers talk to one another because they all know it’s part of the journey to get tickets. You can always identify the tourists because they look impatient. Many give up and decide to visit a museum, only to discover another long line. Those who stay in line know they will be rewarded with a spectacular production and that waiting was the beginning of the whole experience, not just a tedious time to be endured.

The season of Advent is all about waiting and anticipation, but the media message is “hurry up, there’s lots to get done;” “please everyone on your Christmas list;” “buy now and save;” and “bake perfect cookies, throw splendid parties.” The carols have been blaring and trees have been decorated in malls for weeks already, and by December 26th they will be tossed aside. What is the antidote to all this noise and flurry? We can reclaim and savor the season of Advent.

Look for or create pockets of quiet in your day. Enjoy the calmer hues of violet, blue and rose and wait a bit for the traditional red and green. The sounds of Advent are quiet and sometimes even mysterious: the chant O Come, O Come Emmanuel, the stillness of snowfall. It is very, very dark outside. Light candles at dinnertime. Turn off the T.V. and take time to look up at the winter sky and star gaze. Whatever you do to prepare for Christmas, enjoy the process. As you shop, or write out your cards or wrap your presents, learn from the example of New Yorkers and savor these activities as an experience all its own. Hold off on the Christmas music and hold off on putting up the tree as long as you reasonably can and enjoy it as you do it. The real secret of Advent is found in paying attention to how we wait and prepare. Let us savor every moment.

The liturgies of Advent direct our attention to the two comings of Jesus. He came first in a humble birth at Bethlehem, He will come again in glory at the end of time. Advent raises our vision to His promised return and creates a place for the heart to wait in hope and wonder.
