September 6, 2000 Dear Parishioners of St. Malachi:According to Canon law, a place that is designated for the burial of the faithful and blessed by a Bishop using a prescribed blessing, is a sacred place (Canon 1205,1207). That is what our Catholic Cemeteries are. They are an extension of the parish where we have prayed together as community, and provide a place where we may be buried together awaiting the resurrection of our bodies. it is a sacred place that gives evidence of the belief that the ties of relationships with family and the Christian community are not broken by death. In our Diocese of Cleveland, we have a number of beautiful cemeteries which witness to the Church's respect for the dead, and the on-going ministry of caring for their remains. The Church has always recognized burial as a religious rite and a corporal work of mercy. I want to encourage you to visit our Catholic cemeteries and to pray for those who are buried there. I also urge you to talk to our counselors there in person, or by phone, to learn more about our cemeteries and the services and care we provide. When a person plans for his or her burial, it is an expression of faith in the Resurrection and hope in the Lord. When you talk to our counselors, whether it be at-need or pre-need, they have the responsibility to respond in a manner that reflects the trust placed in them. Our counselors' goals are to meet your needs in a compassionate manner with no unnecessary pressure or inducement. The cemetery staff stands ready to assist you and your loved ones in planning your cemetery needs.
