Saint Malachi "Memorial" Church
When the original St. Malachi church burned just days before
the 75th Anniversary Christmas Mass in 1943, the parishioners wanted to rebuild,
but had to wait until after World War II ended. On June 29, 1947, the new St.
Malachi Church was dedicated.

The booklet prepared for the dedication of
the new church was titled "St. Malachi's Memorial Church." As Fr.
George Martin explained, "St. Malachi stands today a monument to the
present parishioners who inherited the spirit and tradition of the past. It
stands a monument to those who were instrumental to its rise. ... It stands as a
monument of faith, a monument of trust in God, a monument to a courageous and
self-sacrificing people."

The church was designed to express the
history and heritage of St. Malachi's from the cross on the
spire to the placement of the statues and the selection of the
stained-glass windows. Everything was planned to express
the living heritage of a faith-filled people. |

The Cross on the Spire: is the cross of Iona or Celtic cross,
which proclaims the Irish heritage of the parish. The cross is illuminated, as
was the cross on the spire of the original church. St. Malachi was considered
the port church and the cross served as a beacon for the sailors. Today, the
cross "lights the gateway to the great West side."
