Highlights of St. Malachi Parish Council Meeting

Introduced and welcomed Lois Samsel and Mary Wishnesky, new Council members for the 2000- 2001 term, and thanked Margaret Armstead for her years of service on the Council. |

Fr. Schuerger announced that Mary Jane Treichel will begin to serve as Pastoral Minister (Lay Ecclesial Minister) to both St. Malachi Parish and St. Patrick's on July 1. She will be working 20 hours per week for St. Malachi's. |

Council President Cathy LaBianca-Johnson noted that the Faith and Sharing retreat will be held at St. Malachi's from July 25-28. Mary Hurley can be contacted for more info at 216-221-7981. |

Council reviewed, discussed and approved the budget for the upcoming fiscal year. See below. |

Discussed the methodology and aims of the Appreciative Inquiry (strategic planning) process being undertaken by the Parish and the Community. The first session on June
11 will involve members of the Parish and Community Councils. This will be followed by
"town hall" meetings for all Parish and Community members to participate: August 13, September 10 and October 4. |

Mark Dailey of the Liturgy Commission reported that the Sacred Ileart statute is being restored and will be returned by the date of the feast of the Sacred Heart. The Passion Sunday slides presentations are being scanned digitally into a computer. Tom Haley soon will begin recording the Passion in the Gospel of Luke for next year. |

Kevin McKenna of the Spiritual Development Commission described the success of the first Little Rock scripture study group, which has been meeting bi-weekly this spring to discuss the Acts of the Apostles. Kevin invites others to host similar groups in the future; the availability of videotapes arid printed materials make this a very easy discussion group to lead. |

Eric Johnson of the Social Concerns Commission reviewed the West Side Catholic Center's fundraising campaign to expand services, particularly the addition of more shelter space, and the goal of the Parish and the Community to raise $4,500. Agie Iloskins made a personal appeal at all Masses on the weekend of June 10-1 1. |

Ed Davis of the Building and Grounds Commission will convene a group of parishioners and Fr. Schuerger to review a report on the condition of the rectory and the church to assess needs and costs. |

Marge Gibbons of Future Church noted that the 10th anniversary of this organization will be celebrated at the annual meeting this fall. Marge also is exploring arid will report back on "right to life" issues, which encompasses not just abortion but also capital punishment, euthanasia, etc. |

The Urban Community School graduated its eight graders on June 7. Sr. Maureen was recognized for the honorary degree awarded to her by John Carroll University and her role as commencement speaker at the University's graduation ceremonies. |
|

Sr. Michael Marie was recognized for her 10 years of outstanding service at the Malachi Center. The Center is formulating a "Fresh Start" program to help persons who will be coming off welfare the fall. The annual golf outing will be held July 30 at Bob O'Links in Avon.. |
|

|
Sr. Francis continues to visit the sick and shut-ins and driving persons to doctors, banking and bill paying appointments, etc. An ice cream social was held for the high-rise residents. |
|

|
The groundbreaking ceremony for the Malachi House expansion will take place on June 22. |

Cathy LaBianca-Johnson and Jack Daley were recognized as outgoing president and vice-president of the Parish Council, to be succeeded by Tom Kastelic and Norm
Bringman. |
