Sharing Thoughts on the Cluster Vision Statement
|
|
On Sunday, May 4, the draft of the “Vision Statement” for the cluster was
distributed after the 11:00 liturgy. There will be an opportunity to provide
direct feedback to the Community of St. Malachi cluster team after liturgy on
Sunday, May 18, regarding this draft. This opportunity will take place at Coffee
Hour.
If you are not able to attend, but would like to share your thoughts, please
send them to any of the CSM cluster team members: Kay Vine, Karen Duffy, Bob
Simoneau, Fr. Tony, or Jim Connell. The vision statement will serve as a main
guide to the full cluster team in shaping the scenarios for the cluster.
Personal Needs Fund Raiser
Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who made the fundraiser such a huge
success! The Personal Needs Fund has increased by $1615.00! A

Proposed Community of St. Malachi
FY 2008-2009 Operating Budget
As a part of this Newsletter, the CSM Finance Council is presenting the
proposed Community of St. Malachi Operating Budget for the Fiscal Year
2008-2009. The proposed operating budget was presented to the CSM Council on
Thursday, May 1, and is published here for your review and comment. The budget
will be voted on at the CSM Council meeting on Thursday, June 5.
The proposed operating budget spreadsheet includes the status of the
Community finances for this fiscal year, as of April 30, 2008. It also includes
the status for the complete year, fiscal 2006-2007. Some highlights of the
proposed operating budget are the following. The Fair Share Salaries are raised
by three percent. The Fair Share Operating costs are expected to be
substantially lower than budgeted for this year. This results from some
economies in operation and contributions from Lakeside Academy to operating
costs.
There is about an additional $3,200 in CSM direct operating costs. The
Diocesan assessment is expected to be slightly lower. Coffee Hour is budgeted to
pay for itself. Our committees have become much more active the past two years,
something we all welcome, and as a result proposed committee expenses of $14,650
exceed those of FY 2006-2007 by $5,450. Christian Formation and some committee
activity also produce some income. To do all of the things the Community
needs and wants to do we will need a Regular Collection income of $176,500,
which is 10 percent above what was donated in FY 2006-2007 with more members.
This will be a real challenge. The present Community operating reserve
is $18,415, which is well below the recommended minimum of three months.
In addition to the operating budget the Community has a number of activities
and funds that are restricted, either by donor specification or by Finance
Council action. These include donor restricted funds: the Monday Night Meal,
Monday Night Medical, Personal Needs Fund and a bequest to the Community that
has been used for church improvements. The Community maintains accounts for the
Men’s Retreat and the National Catholic Youth Conference, which are mostly
self-supported and not part of the operating budget.
Finally, the Finance Council has determined to restrict the rental income
from Lakeside Academy and is currently using it only for major repairs, such as
the new boiler, and for paying down the Community debt to the Diocese. At the
end of FY 2008-2009, barring any new major repair, the net positive balance in
this account should exceed $30,000. This will be close to the end of the lease
and the future of Lakeside Academy should be known. Also, the clustering
decisions will have been made. The Finance Council will revisit the status of
these funds and our decision at that time.
Throughout its history the Community of St. Malachi has recognized and has
been blessed by the varied gifts of its members and friends. The Community
spirit has encouraged others to share their time, talent and treasure in the
service of God’s people, and these are all part of the Community’s gifts to
the Church.
This budget represents a projected monetary total for specific efforts during
the current year. While it addresses certain needs, it does not represent the
countless hours and multiple talents given by many to keep the Community, the
facilities, and the many ministries of St. Malachi thriving. (This statement was
affirmed by Council in June 2006 and is repeated here for all.) The complete
Finance Report is presented to Council at every meeting and available to
Community members at any time.
