Collection Update
The Community needs to increase our income. Everyone can see from the
above report that the Regular Offertory Collections from the Community are well
below budget. In the seven collections since the first of the year the Community
collections have met or exceeded budget only twice. Four have been over $1,000
below budget. The news is not all bad, however. Although we are well below
budget, our expenses are also below projected, due to some new efficiencies and
some shared expenses with Lakeside College Preparatory Academy. Thus, the
Community is managing to pay all of its bills, but just barely. Sound
management says we should have a reserve, usually recommended at three months
expenses, and we haven’t had that for a long time.
As Treasurer, I would like to ask the Community to do two things.
First, I would request that during this remaining fiscal year each of us make
one additional donation beyond our regular donation. I would leave it to each
member to decide what that is. Second, during this re-commitment time, as you
sit down to make your pledge commitment for next year, I would ask that you
seriously consider raising your financial commitment by five percent (5%). I
know these are tight times and many members contribute heavily of your time and
talent, so do what you can but don’t feel you have to do more than you can.
The Community has met its obligations throughout its history and we will
continue to do so. Bob Simoneau, Treasurer

African-American/Native American Appeal
For more than 100 years, the Church has had a strong program of
evangelization for the African-American and Native American communities. In our
diocese, many parishes and programs, including St. Malachi Center, have received
program funding from this collection. There is a second collection at all masses
on Sunday, February 24.
Samaritan Ministry Workshop
St. Malachi Church is offering the Samaritan Ministry Workshop on Alcoholism
and Addiction. Statistics suggest that 66% of the population uses alcohol and/or
other drugs. Of theses, 20% experience major life consequences (drunk driving,
health problems) and 10% develop the disease of alcoholism/addiction. Each
alcoholic/addict affects on the average 4-5 other lives directly. The purpose of
the Samaritan Ministry training is to provide participants with the tools to
help individuals with substance abuse issues and their families in the
community.
The program will take place at St. Malachi Center on Thursdays: March 27,
April 3, 10 and 17 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Brochures are available at the Church,
Rectory or Center. Call Lori Zehe at 440-888-4947 or fill out the registration
form and return it to the Church.

We have a limited amount of Pyxs and we need these for communion calls. Thank

Help Our People Excel
The shootings at Cleveland Success Tech, and the fights, feuds and stabbings
on the east side contributed to the increased awareness among area teens. The
teenagers in the St. Malachi Center’s Leadership Academy began discussing how
they felt and what should be done. They convened to ask themselves a serious,
but simple question, “How can we elevate the safety of the inner city youth?”
In late November, Help Our People Excel (H.O.P.E.) began to meet.
H.O.P.E. is a group responding to this relevant and important issue. It’s
run by the youth, for the youth. With Tim Walters, the community Organizer for
the May Dugan Multi-Service Center (www.maydugancenter.org), they are working on
a youth summit to create ways and methods to better the local community. The
goal is to bring the community together for an event to talk about the issues,
share resources, and to become more successful. In this process, participating
youth are practicing skills, learning to organize and plan, and are empowering
themselves to be active citizens. Sixteen young people (ages 12-17) are working
in small task forces to plan this summit for March 29 at St. Ignatius High
School from 12:30pm to 4:00pm. For more information call 216-771-3036

2008 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal
The theme of this year’s Appeal is “Listen to Him.” Each of us is
invited to listen to what Christ has taught us about helping those in need. Let
us reflect on the gifts God had given to each of us…”all that we are and all
that we have.” Based upon these reflections, determine how much you will
return in gratitude for the gifts you have received. Each household is being
asked to consider making a pledge to support the ministries and services
provided by Catholic Charities. Each of us is encouraged to consider a pledge of
support that will be billed over several months. Please pray for the success of
the important Appeal and the work of Catholic Charities.
