Time…Talent…TREASURE
Second Collections for the Year 2008
We are one body, one spirit in Christ. (Ephesians 4:4) We are
members of the one People of God, the Church. As members of one body, we are
called to help and support one another, so as to build up the one body of
Christ. Because of this oneness in Christ, we are invited to assist our brothers
and sisters in Christ in need each year by supporting special appeals in a
second collection. It is part of our stewardship of the gifts God has given us
and a practical way to support in building up of the life of the Church.
Below is a table of the Second Collections for the Year 2008. Please, cut
this out and post it somewhere. File it in your bills folder, anywhere where you
will be periodically reminded. We always announce up-coming second collections
and they appear in the Newsletter, but I believe having a master list will make
it easier for all and will probably increase contributions if we are aware and
prepared. Besides it is nice to have a summary and know where second collections
go each year.
As most everyone knows by now, as of the year 2007 cash contributions require
an official record. Simple logs or notations on a calendar are no longer
adequate. Since the Community of St. Malachi does not record individual
contributions, if you want to itemize your deductions, you must contribute by
CHECK so you have an acceptable record. I believe having this table will remind
you to write that check before coming to Mass. Remember, making a tax deductible
contribution allows us to use some of our tax dollars for causes that our
important to us, and in effect allows us to contribute a little more.

Missionary Cooperative Plan |
Note: There are two collections that do not have a fixed date: the Aid to
the Church in Central & Eastern Europe and the Missionary Cooperative Plan.
The collection for the Church in Central & Eastern Europe is supposed to be
taken during Lent; at St. Malachi the collection usually happens in early June,
to avoid having too many special collections close together. The date for the
Missionary Cooperative Plan depends on when the missionary who is coming to St.
Malachi is available.
Finally, as has been explained in previous articles, second collection
contributions from St. Malachi Parish and the Community of St. Malachi are
counted by the Parish and bundled into one check that is sent to the appropriate
second collection office with a form letter indicating that the contribution
comes from both parishes. This is an operational convenience that has served us
well. We will regularly report the combined amount to the Community.
Bob Simoneau, CSM Treasurer.
