Neighborhood Brothers in Need

St. Malachi’s basement clothing ministry is in desperate need of men’s large hooded sweatshirts, men’s blue jeans, men’s large warm coats and white socks. As the temperatures are falling, our brothers of the neighborhood are cold. They truly need and appreciate your generous donations.

Please bring your clothing to church and place it in the big box on the altar under the St. Malachi statue. You can also drop off your donation during the weekday directly to the basement.

Mary Carol Lucic

Monday Night Meal

For this 2007 Thanksgiving meal, we have been blessed with a generous scholarship from Al Sullin’s union brothers. With this gift we have purchased 30 frozen turkeys. Up to 30 cooks are needed to take home one or more turkeys to be baked and sliced. Pick up the turkeys on November 11th and please return them to the hall for the November 19th Monday night meal. Our brothers and sisters of the neighborhood will be thankful.

A signup sheet is available at Coffee Hour until November 11th.

Minutes of CSM Council Meeting

October 4, 2007

Those present included Paul Kunkel, Mary Ann Kunkel, Marie James, Dan Zehe, Jim Zaferopolos, Kay Vine, Nancy Mura, Diane Brinich, Joan Daley, Pam Pulizzi, Jackie Bluett, Father Tony, Jim Connell, Mike Petit, Lori Zehe, Bob Simoneau.

Guests: Kathy Burke, Chris Schenk.

Call to order at 6:35 p.m. on the Feast of St. Francis.

I. President, Jim Connell, opened the meeting with a prayer service followed by a moment of reflection.

II. Diane Brinich moved and Joan Daly seconded approval of the minutes of the previous meeting. The minutes were approved with three abstentions.

III. Presentations

Chris Schenk gave an overview of the history of FutureChurch, its available programs and current campaigns. She thanked the Council and the members of the Community repeatedly for their financial and moral support.

Kathy Burke gave an overview of the Sex Abuse Task Force, going on its fifth year. She stated that they do much letter writing with no response thus far. She also stated that they have done some work trying to speak to Senators. They are looking to expand their mission as a group to the broader issue of sexual abuse. They meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Rectory. Kay mentioned feedback she had heard regarding opening training such as VIRTUS to all including parents and updating those materials.

Committee Reports

Jim passed out two forms. The updated Description of the Community of St. Malachi that was voted on at the last annual meeting and the updated copy of the Charter, also voted on at the annual meeting.

Finance Council – Bob reported at length on the donations sent out annually to the four related ministries. He also reported that the finance committee has looked at the issue of making the Community’s second collections separate from that of the parish, but after review will keep the process the same but add a letter that the enclosed monies are from both the Parish and Community. Kay suggested that in the letter it states that this has been the practice for years. Second collections and the 2007-2008 budget will be in the next newsletter. Bob then explained two new categories on this year’s budget. Both developed from the rent being collected from the new school lease. We receive 40% of the total rent which will be divided equally into two categories, Capital and General reserve. The finance council (which is a Council that can make decisions) is following the budget voted on by the Community and does not want to depend on this rent for general operating expenses. The Capital reserve will be utilized to purchase things such as a new boiler if approved by the diocese and the General will be used to pay down the Community’s assessment fees to the diocese for which we are in arrears. Mary Ann made a motion to support the two new categories in the budget and Kay seconded the motion. All were in favor; the motion carried.

Other committee reports:

Communications Committee is sad to see Mary Englert leave her post as the coordinator of the Newsletter and is very thankful to Nadge Herceg for taking over this role.

Spiritual Development will have its next speaker on Oct. 23rd.

Liturgy Committee will be having a Thanksgiving eve Mass (a day early) on Tuesday at 7:30. There is a meeting after Mass on Oct 21st in the Library.

Membership will have a new member welcome Sunday on Novembers 18, and is asking all committees and ministries to have a table during coffee hour. Dan is still trying to obtain the data from last year’s recommitment.

Hospitality has a number of suggested events they are trying to pursue including a fall picnic October 14.

Social Action will be undertaking a furniture ministry in conjunction with the Cleveland Furniture Bank. Transportation will also be available for people from the Center in need of this service.

Christian Formation has 115 plus enrolled this year and is continuing to work on shared ministry with hospitality and others.

This was in addition to the committee reports that were distributed.

VI. There is a vacancy on the Council due to the withdrawal of an at Large member. The vacancy will be shared with the Community and ask if anyone is willing to serve. Names should be given to Jim.

Additionally, there is the issue of whether the hospitality ministers (ushers) at Mass should fall under the Hospitality or Liturgy committee. They are currently under Hospitality. Nancy Mura is to discuss the issue with Keith Miles who coordinates the hospitality ministers. A motion was presented to place the members of the hospitality ministry under the Liturgy Committee and then withdrawn after wanting to see what the people of this ministry would prefer and their pros and cons. The issue and motion are then tabled to the next meeting.

It was suggested that during this discussion a resolve to the issue of the collection baskets be given to the Community as we were told we would have a new system and then with no explanation switched back to the old system. Nancy stated that from her experience the new system did not work well when there were gaps in rows or empty rows and that is why there may have been a switch back one week.

Jim shared the forms for the Cluster process reporting that they have had their third meeting and that their fourth meeting is this coming Wednesday. Meetings three, four and five of the process are designated to review several forms designated by the Cluster process. Some discussion ensued regarding the distinction of the Community from the Parish as some forms are being submitted jointly. Jim suggested redirection to the immediate needs of the Community and proposed an extra 2 minutes during the announcements between now and November to explain the process. This would also then be put in Communio. Additionally Jim will work with Pam on the development of a form that Community members can put their questions and feedback on.

Discuss next month putting Committee reports or highlights in Communio.

Adjourn 8:55 p.m.

Jim closed the meeting at 9:00pm with reflection to St. Francis. Respectfully submitted,

Pam Pulizzi, Communications Co-Chair

Dear Friends Interested in Climate Change,

You may have been at the day-long Climate Change Consultation in Columbus held in April by the Catholic Conference of Ohio and the national Catholic Coalition on Climate Change or you may have been invited but were unable to attend or you may have contacted me since then.

I want to extend an invitation to you all to join with us on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Notre Dame College (4545 College Rd., South Euclid, Ohio 44121; Administration Bldg.) for a facilitated working meeting on what is going on related to climate change in Northeast Ohio and what we can do together. There will be updates on progress being made and planned activities, but the bulk of the time from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm will be devoted to a strategic discussion about how we as Catholics can make a difference on this critical issue.

Dinner will be served so please RSVP to me either by phone (216-939-3839) or email (lmcalabrese@clevelandcatholiccharities.org). Also, please let me know about any special dietary considerations. I hope to see you on November 13th.
