MINUTES OF CSM COUNCIL MEETING
AUGUST 2, 2007
Those present included Paul Kunkel, Mary Ann Kunkel, Marie James, Dale
Peters, Lou Keim, Dan Zehe, Jim Zaferopolos, Kay Vine, Nancy Mura, Diane Brinich,
Joan Daley, Pam Pulizzi, Jackie Bluett, Father Tony and Ellen McIntyre.
In the absence of President, Jim Connell, Kay Vine opened the meeting with a
prayer service followed by sharing.
Mary Ann Kunkel moved and Diane Brinich seconded approval of the minutes of
the previous meeting. The minutes were approved. Dan Zehe informed the group of
his changed phone# and Paul Kunkel of his new e-mail address. Committee chairs
handed out committee meeting reports.
Kay announced that there would be only 7 CSM Council meetings in the coming
year as decided previously. These will be held on 8/2/07, 10/4/07, 11/1/07,
2/7/08, 3/6/08, 5/1/08 and 6/5/08
Pam Pulizzi speaking for the Communications Committee explained the use of
“MyChurch”, a free online
tool, for the purpose of more productive use of
the Internet for the growth of all the CSM Community. She strongly encouraged
all of us to become an active part of this
program [See
Communio for more information]. The Communications Committee
is also working on making our website more functional. These two Internet tools
should be of great help in facilitating online communication within the
Community
Kay then spoke about goals for this year’s Council and asked for input from
other Council members. The following thoughts were shared.
1. Inviting someone from our various ministries to speak at Council meetings.
2. Addressing the 29% Mass attendance and how to improve that.
3. Dan Zehe is to work on updating the membership of CSM and committees using
a computer program which is shared by the parish.
4. Kay suggested having upcoming committee meetings listed in the newsletter
in a prominent way to encourage more to attend and become involved
Moving on to the cluster process, the Cluster Committee will be meeting
monthly and it was felt important to get input from more members of the
Community. Several ways of seeking Community input and offering informed
participation to all members were suggested. These included
- Have a “listener”
--- take to the Cluster Group,
- Possible online “Chat Room” ?weekly?,
- Extensive use of the “My Church” site as explained by Pam earlier,
- Table
at Coffee Hour for discussion or to leave questions, ideas, etc.
- Exchange
with parishioners as “Speakers” in an effort to communicate more of our
identity to each other -“story-telling”
- Survey of CSM members and have a
General Meeting,
- Possibly a “Town Hall Meeting” with data, poster,
- Publish projected time-line when available,
- Forms to be dropped at church
doors, collection basket or Coffee Hour,
- Cluster committee or Community
Council meet with small, already existing groups within CSM. Another question
sought an explanation of the priorities which will be followed in deciding which
churches will survive
Dan brought up the question of recruiting members from the area, inviting
them to visit, get to know CSM and possibly join. Would that be prudent since we
don’t yet know the final outcome regarding the cluster? Kay spoke about the
importance of community outreach and the positive reaction to opening our doors
and offering “tours” on 6/30.
In the Pastor’s Report, Fr. Tony informed us that the Bishop will be
celebrating Mass here at St. Malachi’s on Saturday, August 11th. He will
celebrate Mass with the Community at a later date. The charter school (Lakeside
College Preparatory) has contracted with St. Malachi to provide custodial and
maintenance services for the school. Fr. Tony stated that the person hired would
be under Steve Greshem’s supervision. This will enable us to help one of the
volunteer custodians in improving his life situation. Fr. Tony related that the
man in charge of Lakeside College Preparatory School has been quite open and
there is a good relationship. Diane brought up a concern regarding the school
building needing repairs at present; is it safe at this time? Fr. Tony stated
that ongoing repairs have been and will continue to be made as needed. If we did
not feel it were safe, we would not have allowed our own children to use it. It
had been noted previously that one of the boilers began leaking this spring and
it has been removed. Investigation is being done regarding replacement of this
boiler. Because the cost will exceed $10,000, the purchase will require
permission from the bishop
Fr. Tony also announced that Stephanie Pritts has been accepted into the
Pastoral Ministry Certification Process beginning this fall
Diane Brinich, speaking for the Christian Formation Committee, related a
shortage in needed funds for the young people to attend the Catholic Youth
Conference and asked about the possibility of having a second collection. It was
suggested that some type of earning of the necessary money would be a better
idea. Council showed a consensus about putting up the $1000 required until the
money is obtained. The youth attending the conference will report back regarding
the experience
Report from the Social Action Committee stated that Helen Misener is still
working on recruiting volunteers to help others in need of various types of
assistance. The project is going well. Joan Daly spoke of a need for donated
furnitur
Jackie Bluett for Spiritual Development told us about the planned “Being
the People of God” series which will begin 8/21/07 in the hall and continue
monthly for the remainder of 2007. Details will be in the newsletter. The Sunday
following a lecture there will be a discussion at Coffee Hour following Mass.
Kay closed the meeting with the Vibrant Parish Life prayer at 8:30p.m. .
Respectfully submitted, Ellen McIntyre, Interim Secretary

Update of the Cluster Planning Committee
The Cluster Planning Committee met on September 20th at St. Malachi. This was
the third meeting of the committee, which has decided to rotate its meetings
among the cluster partners. St. Patrick will host the next meeting. During the
initial meetings, the committee is taking time to learn more about our cluster
partners. St. Malachi Parish and the Community of St. Malachi, as the hosts of
the meeting, shared their history, ministries, and values with the committee.
The committee reviewed Bishop Lennon’s May letter establishing the cluster
of St. Malachi, St. Patrick, St. Wendelin, and the Community of St. Malachi.
While the issues and challenges presented by the Bishop have received the bulk
of the attention, the committee spent some time focusing on the first page of
the Bishop’s letter, specifically that “the foundation for the work of all
clusters is the Church’s essential mission of evangelization and
re-evangelization.” The committee paid special attention to a point of
discussion Bishop Lennon has asked all clusters to address: “engaging all of
our faithful in regularly attending and participating in the Sunday Eucharistic
Liturgy.”
After reviewing the Bishop’s letter, the committee reviewed the cluster’s
demographic information and parish trends. As the last topic of discussion, the
committee began to look at an assessment of each parish’s current and
projected staffing needs. At the next meeting on October 10th, the committee
will continue to look at the staffing assessments, as well as ministry and
financial assessments for the parishes.
