It is presented by Regina Costello, associate curator of Irish American History at the Western Reserve Historical Society and results from efforts of the Irish American Archives Society. Current president and vice president of the IAAS are CSM members Jerry Sheehan and Rosemarie Feighan DeJohn; an emeritus board member is Mary Englert.

Minutes of Community of St. Malachi Annual Membership Meeting

April 22, 2007

The Annual Meeting of the Membership of the Community of St. Malachi was called to order by President Jim Connell at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2007. Jerry Sheehan led us in a prayer by Bishop John Reardon. Jim then thanked the members who had provided breakfast and introduced the current council members.

Community members standing for election to this year’s council were presented , namely, Diane Brinich, Christian Formation; Marie James and Nancy Mura, Hospitality; Mike Petit, Liturgy; Jackie Bluett, Spiritual Development; Bob Simoneau, Treasurer; Lou Keim, Dale Peters and Jim Connell, Members at Large; Pam and Joe Pulizzi, Communications, and Dan Zehe, Membership. The position of Social Action chairperson is still open. Bruce Wacker questioned as to whether the change in the number of At Large members would take place this year or next year if changed in the Charter revisions. Jim stated that this would begin next year. The president then asked for other nominations for office and as there were none, suggested that the ballot be passed by acclamation. Joe Mohar moved to that effect; Cindy DiNardo seconded the motion. The motion passed by voice vote and the ballot was accepted.

Regarding the Charter changes proposed by the Committee on Charter Revision, two typo or printing errors were pointed out and corrected. Jim indicated the significant changes to the Charter which had been proposed. Most were self-explanatory but Paul Wingenfeld asked for clarification of section IV-8e – regarding allowing an incapacitated member of the council to participate in meetings electronically. Jim and Kay Vine offered an explanation as to how this could be accomplished. Vote was then held on the Charter Revisions and members of the council were appointed to count the votes. All Charter Revisions ultimately passed.

Jim then addressed the need for succinct directives as to the Charisms and Values of CSM. Over the past year, a committee has worked on this and copies of their proposed directives were made available. Kay Vine moved that the CSM affirm the directives suggested by the committee. Jerry Sheehan seconded the motion. Bill Schubmehl stated that he felt it important that the fact of CSM’s having been established as a non-profit Ohio corporation be included as part of the Charisms and Values. He so moved to amend and Peter Toomey seconded the motion. The motion carried by voice vote.

Barb Wingenfeld questioned the word “personal” as regards the definition of the Community. Fr. Tony explained that this was used as a canonical term. Was this term redundant in the identification of CSM? Judy Slivka said that as a new member this had helped her to understand the Community.

Copies of the Annual Report were distributed. Any Council member may be contacted with questions. This will be discussed at the next Council meeting May 3, 2007. Jim Connell spoke to the need for all members to participate and contribute to the life of CSM and quoted Don Cozzens on the need for all to take part in the ‘discipline and toil of preparation.” An update on the Clustering process was presented by Jim affirming that the Diocese has approved our No. 1 Clustering choice. Training for this process will be May 30, 2007 at Ascension Church, with five representatives from each parish involved.

Mary Englert questioned as to who, exactly, is on the Finance Committee. Bob Simoneau answered that he was a member as Treasurer; other members include Fr. Tony Schuerger as pastor, Diane Brinich, Joe Mohar, Ed Shemo and Jim Connell, ex officio.

Regarding the St. Malachi school building, Jim informed the CSM that representatives from the Parish Council, Community Council, St. Malachi Center and Monday Night Meal came together and discussed leasing the St. Malachi school building to a charter school group, specifically the Leona Group, which would run it as a K-5 school. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (West), Metro Catholic, St. Rocco and Urban Community Schools have been contacted to see if they had any concerns about the proposal. Helen Misener asked if there were to be more meetings on this topic and this was answered in the affirmative. Frank Herceg brought up the question of who receives the income from this property leasing. Jim stated that it is anticipated that one-half of the proceeds would go to a Capital Improvement Fund and the other half to an Operating Fund. This is not yet firm.

Kathy Burke told us that the Sex Abuse Task Force continues to meet. At this time, three priests from our diocese have been assigned to a time of prayer and penance. Marie James informed us that the Liturgy Committee will have a planning meeting this summer and urged all interested to come and share ideas.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:35 p.m. with a reading of the Community Mission Statement by the entire assembled Community.

Task Force on Sexual Abuse

will present a showing of the PBS documentary

“Hand of God”

Joe Cultrera.
