Message from Jim Connell, CSM
Council President:
CSM TO CONSIDER CHARTER CHANGES
“At the Community of St. Malachi Annual Meeting on Sunday, Apr. 22,
the CSM membership will be asked to vote on changes to the CSM Charter.
During this past year, a CSM Council subcommittee consisting of Kay Vine,
Fran DeChant, Paul Kunkel and Jim Connell have met to review and
revise the charter. Gene Kramer and Bob Simoneau at various
points also assisted the committee in the work. During the Mar. 1 and Mar.
22 council meetings, the CSM Council reviewed the changes and approved them
for presentation to the CSM at the annual meeting. The last changes to the
charter were approved in 1996.
“While many of the changes are clarifications in the wording and
language of the charter, there are a number of significant changes. The five
most significant changes are
- changing the number of required council meetings each year from
nine to six,
- adding the position of Secretary to the Council,
- reducing the number of at-large members from six to four,
- establishing a quorum for CSM meetings where a vote is to be
taken, and
- setting a required number of affirmative votes for different
types of votes taken by the CSM.
“Attached to this newsletter is a copy of the charter
with all of the changes and clarifications. Changes have been clearly
marked. In addition to the changes to the charter, the CSM is being
presented a one-page ‘Brief History and Description of the Community of
St. Malachi .’ This document comes from a number of different sources
including the CSM meeting last June when members were asked to reflect on
the charisms that best describe the Community of St. Malachi. This document
will be a good handout for sharing with other parishes during our cluster
meetings as well as a good handout for CSM members to share with prospective
members. This document is also attached to today’s newsletter.” - J.C.
CSM ANNUAL MEETING
following our 11 o’clock Liturgy Sunday, Apr. 22
Please remember that CSM annual commitment is required for your votes.
Commitment forms will continue to be available at next Sunday’s coffee
hour, Apr. 15.
Be sure to ensure your right to vote. To refresh your memory, our CSM
Mission Statement can be found on Page 2 of this newsletter. Council
candidates are listed on Page 3.

THE COMMUNITY OF ST. MALACHI MISSION STATEMENT
|
Jesus Christ has called us together
as a Catholic Community in this particular place.
Through the Scriptures, Christ has given us:
A pattern for our salvation,
A living witness of God’s love for us.
Our mission therefore, is
To worship God and celebrate Eucharist together;
To love others the way we are loved by God;
To take time to comfort God’s people;
To provide refuge;
To heal;
To console;
To give hope.
As a pilgrim church continuing the presence of Christ,
We recognize the need to nurture our own personal and spiritual growth;
We desire to take more seriously the impact of the Gospel on our world;
We commit to becoming stronger witnesses to the love of God in Jesus,
Who is our hope.

New IRS Rules for Cash Contributions: As we go into our Annual
Recommitment process and you intend to itemize deductions, we would like to
remind you that the IRS rules on charitable contribution record-keeping have
tightened up. It is no longer acceptable to keep your own log on pure cash
donations. Since the Community of St. Malachi does not keep records of
individual donations, if you intend to deduct your donations to the
CSM, you must do it by check This will be your only record. Please
remember to make checks out to the Community of St. Malachi.
Also, please note that the Treasurer’s phone number in the roster is in
error. My correct number is 440-356-5080

BRIEF HISTORY and DESCRIPTION of the
COMMUNITY OF ST. MALACHI
PREFACE
The Community of St. Malachi began in 1967 when a group of Catholic women and
men celebrated the 11:00 Liturgy together. They were seeking to implement and
experience liturgical reform and the expanded role of the laity brought about by
the Second Vatican Council.
The Community became a personal, non-territorial parish of the Diocese of
Cleveland in 1975 with its own Charter and Mission. Rapid growth of the
Community filled the Church of St. Malachi with our dreams, our spirit and our
vision.
In 2000, the Community of St. Malachi celebrated its 25th Anniversary as
a non-territorial parish. Those first twenty-five years saw the growth of many
ministries. While the mission and physical location of the Community have
remained the same, the Community has evolved and changed to meet the needs of
its members and the people that it serves.
During 2006, the Community, as well as all parishes of the Diocese of
Cleveland, began a reflection process as part of Phase II of the Vibrant Parish
Life initiative. The process challenged the Community to reflect on itself in
preparation for entering into a cluster with other parishes of the Diocese.
Emerging from the reflection process was a renewed sense of the Community’s
mission and history as well as a restatement of the charisms/values that are
descriptive of the Community.
Now in 2007 as the Community of St Malachi prepares to cluster with the
parishes of St. Malachi, St. Patrick, and St. Wendelin, the Community brings to
the Cluster its history, its mission, and its charisms/values.
THE COMMUNITY’S CHARISMS/VALUES
“Char.ism, n. a gift freely given by God to a person or community, for the
good and service of others in bringing about the Reign of God.” |
The five key charisms/values of the Community of St. Malachi are
LITURGY
Is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed;
Is the core through which the faith life of the Community is expressed in the
celebration of the Eucharist;
Supports the importance of a prayer life;
Embraces the full inclusion of language and music through our liturgies; and
Values meaningful liturgical celebrations reflecting Community input.
FAITH FORMATION
Recognizes the need for ongoing formation and development;
Provides spiritual development and formation for all ages; and
Includes the faith formation of children and young adults through
education.
WELCOMING SPIRIT
Extends the spirit of welcome to all people;
Embraces all people regardless of what they bring with them; and
Creates a welcoming climate through hospitality and outreach.
SOCIAL ACTION
Recognizes and accepts responsibility for meeting the needs of the common
good;
Provides outreach to the Community and neighborhood;
Is guided by the principles of social justice, peace and non-violence; and
Collaborates with other social action programs.
LAY DIRECTION (LAY LEADERSHIP)
Recognizes the responsibility of each individual to live out his/her
baptismal call;
Promotes the development and sharing of individual time, talent, and
treasure;
Takes leadership responsibility for self-governance;
Takes responsibility for the Community’s budget;
Fosters an involved Community willing to plan and support its activities; and
Asks for “annual re-commitment” as a reminder of the Community’s
purpose and
Mission.
LIVING OUR CHARISMS/VALUES
These charisms/values are lived out through the baptismal call and response
of each Community member, the work of the Community’s Standing Committees, and
the leadership of the Community Council. The challenge for all Community members
and the Community as a whole is to recognize two key aspects of charisms.
“Charisms are anything but a free pass from the discipline and toil of
preparation
and practice. They remain, however, the foundations of a graced ministry,
performance, and achievement.”
“Charisms, by their nature, are not given for the fulfillment of the
individual alone but for the welfare and betterment of other—for the sake
of the Gospel.”
Freeing Celibacy by Donald Cozzens
The Community of St. Malachi must respond to these challenges and realities
as it moves forward.
The sources for this handout are the Community’s Welcome brochure, the Community’s 25th Anniversary
booklet and the 2006 survey completed by Community members in preparation for the “Cluster process.”
