Schuerger, Barb Pistillo, Fran DeChant, Jackie Bluett, Mike Petit, Coletta
Taddeo, Marie James. Mary Ann Kunkel, Paul Kunkel.
Also Kim Tatro, office manager for St. Malachi; Don Tatro, and Nickie
Stary, interim recording secretary
Absent: Helen Meisner, Jim Connell
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Kay Vine, vice
president, in the absence of Jim Connell.
Guests were welcomed and introduced. Council members
introduced themselves also.
Kimberly Tatro spoke as a representative of Malachi ministries. She
described her role in the day to day operations of the parish/community office
– a job she has held for three years. Her major efforts include: responding to
phone calls (many occur on Monday), scheduling the use of the various facilities
on the “Malachi campus,” contacting area churches to collaborate in
addressing the many requests for financial and other support that come to the
rectory. She also works with Fr. Tony when requests are made for the
Special Needs Fund as well as joint efforts with St. Malachi Center. Her work
also includes researching the best expenditures on office supplies and other
items ordered by the Church. She is working on creating a manual to assist
people who use the various facilities and equipment in the hall, school and
office.
Minutes of the previous council meeting, Sept. 28, 2006, were reviewed and
approved with the addition of Marie James attending the meeting.
Committee meeting reports were then reviewed. (It was suggested that reports
be kept to one page.) The Pastor’s report was also noted. Highlights of each
report were shared.
Finance Council: Bob Simoneau reported that the regular collection at 11
o’clock Mass is up and will be monitored for several weeks to see if the trend
continues and what (if any) further work will need to be done to create more
income for the CSM as expenses are about $1500 above last year – mainly due to
salaries. An update will be made in February 2007. Business on other accounts to
note: Social Action grant for the homeless was closed and a $500 donation made
to the West Side Catholic Center; St. Procop House account closed; Monday Night
Meal medical account, which has been dormant for some time, will also be looked
into by Bob.
Social Action: Fran DeChant reported for Helen Misener. The
committee is looking for a presentation to be made next year by a nationally
known speaker.
Membership: Barb Pistillo is working on a program for new members. She
would like council members to give input on how/what is presented to those
joining and/or rejoining the CSM.
Christian Formation: Diane Brinich reported that the next National Youth
Conference will be in Columbus next year – a family fun day fundraiser is
being planned. All are also invited to the Christian Formation Family Advent
Celebration at Lakewood Park on Dec. 10.
Hospitality: Coletta Taddeo reported on meeting with Cathy Graham to
set up some joint efforts with St. Malachi Parish. Gene Kramer has
requested that the committee plan for a Seder meal next year as has been done in
the past. St. Malachi Center also sponsors a Seder. Kay Vine and Jackie
Bluett will explore possible connections.
Liturgy: Mike Petit brought the question to council raised at the last
Liturgy Committee meeting about continuing the tradition of Mass on Thanksgiving
Eve. Since attendance at the Wednesday evening Liturgy has been sparse the last
few years, suggestions were made to have a different type of service on another
day of the week. Discussion centered on not having Mass or another service on a
different day, but to keep the tradition of Thanksgiving Eve even if joined with
other churches such as those in the NWS Shared Ministry. St. Malachi’s has
been part of Shared Ministry for several years. Council consensus was to promote
the Wednesday evening prayer service for this year as a Shared Ministry church
(this rotates each year).
Spiritual Development: Jackie Bluett thanked everyone who helped make the
Oct. 11 Labyrinth blessing a very special occasion. A Women’s Program is
planned for Nov. 19 and an Advent Program on Nov. 30. The committee is planning
ahead for events during the next two years. Information was also given on St.
Malachi Center’s strategic planning process which will begin Dec. 9, with
other meetings in January and March.
St. Malachi Parish Council: Kay Vine reported that the parish is working
on developing their commissions (committees) with outreach efforts during
Advent. Betsy Nero and Kay will talk with the parish about any ways that
the CSM efforts can work to support theirs -–possible Communion Reflections.
Council members liked the ideas.
Central West District: At its October meeting, which Kay Vine attended
as the CSM representative, presentations were made on good citizenship and the
value of being an involved voter. These were done by the diocesan Commission on
Catholic Community Action.
CSM Logo: Several designs have been created and used in the past few
years. The council reviewed all of them and chose the one currently used on the
front of the Welcome brochure as the standard logo for letterhead, newsletter
masthead.
Cluster Leadership Team: A report with recommendations to the CSM Council
was distributed from the group’s Oct. 24 meeting (attached). Proposals for
clustering were given to the diocese by the required Oct. 1 deadline and were
based on the preferences expressed by the CSM at its meeting Sept. 17. Fr.
Tony reported that requirements for clusters are still being developed. Best
practices of other dioceses are being reviewed. More information will come when
current proposals are responded to by/on Dec. 1.
New Business: Since there is an ad hoc committee currently working on CSM
Charter revisions and updates as well as reviewing the current Policies and
Procedures Handbook of the CSM, Kay Vine asked that committee chairs
begin working with their respective groups to review information currently in
the handbook and make revisions/recommendations as needed. It was suggested that
current chairs also contact previous chairs to get a sense of the workings of
the committees over a period of time.
It was recommended that a joint meeting be held with the parish in January to
begin some collaborative conversation on the topic of stewardship (see Oct. 24
Cluster Leadership report).
Fran DeChant gave a report on Shoreway development. Al Meyers and Chris
Dusek are willing to serve as liaisons to the community input group as they
are residents of the area.
The role of the Hospitality Committee was raised. Coletta Taddeo would
like input and direction from the council. Fr. Tony expressed concern
about structure for the committee.
The topic of Fair Trade also was raised. Perhaps the Social Action Committee
could look at this issue and make recommendations about the CSM’s practices of
Fair Trade beyond supporting and promoting organizations such as Heartbeats and
IRTF (InterReligious Task Force on Central America).
Should the Monday Night Meal have a seat on the CSM Council? Kay Vine will
bring this to Bill McLaughlin, current coordinator. Council members were
also asked to think about this.
Next council meeting will be Dec. 7, 2006. Meeting was adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
Minutes recorded by Nickie Stary and edited by Kay Vine.
Kay also distributed materials and articles relating to Lay Leadership from
Vatican II documents and more current publications. Council was asked to read
these for discussion at the next meeting.

CSM CLUSTER LEADERSHIP TEAM
Report of Oct. 24, 2006 Meeting – Provided by Kay Vine
After submitting two cluster proposals to the diocese Sept. 29, 2006, the
Cluster Group agreed to meet to wrap up various issues that arose during the
many meetings of the late spring and summer months. (The proposals submitted
were in accord with the CSM preferences indicated at the Sept. 19 meeting: first
choice, Near West churches; second choice, Detroit-Superior churches.
This is a summary of that discussion, with recommendations to the CSM
Council:
It is important that “we” (the CSM) gets its own house in order: What is
the role of the laity/development of lay leadership for the CSM - per a
significant number of responses to the June survey re: important attribute of
CSM is “Lay Direction?”
Education and training/orientation is needed for more clear transitions and
on-going efforts of council members, committee members and chairs, as well as
staff regarding the unique attributes and working spirit of the CSM.
What are the purposes and goals of all CSM
committees/commissions?
In the area of education, use the topic of stewardship for joint
conversation and common efforts with the SMP in the coming months.
Adult faith formation – living out the baptismal call – could be a
good topic for beginning joint efforts with parishes in our designated cluster
(after April 2007).
Hold a joint meeting with the SMP council in January 2007, after the initial
cluster proposed drafts are received in December 2006.
Questions for CSM Council: Will the 2007 CSM Cluster representatives in
meeting with other parishes serve as a body to identify issues/solutions to the
CSM Council? Will the CSM Council recommend to the Cluster rep team as to how
they should proceed in discussions with other parishes and/or identify the role
of the Cluster?

As reported in the Dec. 10, 2006 St. Malachi Parish Bulletin:
“Bishop Richard Lennon
has notified us that he needs more time ‘to
reflect on the recommendations from the parishes and the various committees that
have reviewed these recommendations. Thus, I write…to inform you that I will
be communicating with all the parishes regarding their cluster assignments early
in February 2007.’”
