Regular Announcements? Communion Reflections? Special Messages?
|
|
Some confusion exists about which is which. Especially about Communion
Reflections. And how to determine where they fit into the Liturgy. And how a CSM
member can contribute.
The CSM Liturgy Committee is working to clarify all this within the
spirit of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) and offers the
following observations:
- Regular Announcements – GIRM suggests these are appropriate before
Mass because they apply to the celebration we are entering into, e.g. acolytes’,
Eucharistic ministers’ and lectors’ names; intentions; music practice;
anointing of the sick and baptisms during Mass, etc.
- Communion Reflections - Messages that enhance our silent reflection
on lessons of the day, our communion with our God or our broader journey of
faith. These reflections, immediately following Communion, do not promote
something else.
- Special Announcements - Announcements for our “going forth to
serve” belong following the Prayer After Communion, just before the Final
Blessing. They should be brief. Routine; e.g. upcoming meetings, future special
events. What the CSM Handbook refers to as “Vital, Extraordinary,” e.g. the
Finance Committee chair addressing our financial condition, or an appeal to
support an upcoming retreat, etc.
In its lay leadership, the CSM Liturgy Committee, chaired by Mike Petit, would
like to share the thinking behind these recommendations for proposed minor
changes and hear CSM members’ thoughts and concerns, if any. A very brief
meeting for all interested members will be held at coffee hour following our
11 o’clock Liturgy, Sunday, Nov. 19.
Message from Mike Petit, Liturgy Committee chair:
“With diminishing numbers attending the traditional Thanksgiving Eve Mass at
St. Malachi, the CSM Community Council decided to cancel it this year. You are
encouraged to attend the Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday,
Nov. 22, at St. Paul’s Community Church, 4427 Franklin Blvd., Cleveland”.

Deadlines
Nov 26 CSM Newsletter, Nov 19
Nov 26 Communio, Nov 15
Minutes of the Community of St. Malachi Council Meeting
- Sept. 28, 2006
(Minutes of the subsequent meeting, Nov. 2, 2006, will be reported in due
time.)
2006-2007 Council Members Present: Kay Vine, Diane Brinich, Bob Simoneau,
Dale Peters, Fr. Tony Schuerger, Barb Pistillo, Fran DeChant, Jackie Bluett,
Mike Petit, Coletta Taddeo, and Ellen McIntyreas interim secretary. Janelle
Schubmehl was present as a member of the CSM.
In the absence of Jim Connell, Kay Vine called the meeting to order at
6:15 p.m. Bob Simoneau led the council in prayer and reflection. Personal
reflections were shared.
The minutes were read and a proper name corrected. The minutes were then
approved as corrected.
As a representative of the Bereavement Ministry, Kay Vine gave a brief
summary of our funeral and wake planning which she coordinates for the CSM. She
meets with the bereaved family members to help select readings and music, decide
who is to do readings, write petitions, etc. Kay finds this personally very
rewarding. It also adds a CSM presence to the families at this difficult time.
Kay would like to expand the ministry somewhat, possibly adding bereavement
support. She asked for others who would be interested in helping. Kay is
certified by the diocese as a Bereavement Minister.
Reports: In the Pastor’s Report, which was handed out, Fr.
Tony Schuerger received a wonderful “thank you” letter from the
principal of DeLaSalle High School in Bethlehem. He reported that a meeting was
held regarding the West Shoreway project. He was unable to attend but Fran
DeChant did attend and gave us her thoughts on this meeting. Fran suggested
that the CSM should have a designated representative at these meetings, since we
are a part of this area because of our location and because of the importance of
this dangerous intersection. It was proposed that we might ask Al and Chris
Myers to take on this responsibility since they live in the neighborhood and
would therefore have a more powerful voice. The project is scheduled to begin in
2010 and be completed in 2011. Fr. Tony stated that he has seen the plan “on
the table” and feels that it would be good for St. Malachi. It would serve to
make the intersection much safer for pedestrians. Council agreed to have a
representative attend these meetings and Fran stated that she would be
responsible for exploring the possibility with Chris and Al.
In the Finance Report, Bob Simoneau supplied a hand-out documenting
the CSM finances as of 9/30/06. He also provided a sheet of “Finance Facts”
showing comparison figures for our projected budget versus regular collections
to date. He is working on the “green card” scenario to encourage folks to
increase contributions. Bob stated that this report included the $2000 in the
budget for “support of related ministries” which had not been added into the
prior report.
The Liturgy Committee Chair, Mike Petit, stated that heads of the
Communications Committee and of the eucharistic ministers had been “co-opted”
to attend the next Liturgy Committee meeting in an effort to better coordinate
our Liturgies. There will be discussion as to when to do announcements and
whether or not eucharistic ministers are needed at the rear of the church. Mike
also announced that the Mass of the Anointing of the Sick will be held on
10/29/06.
For the Spiritual Development Committee, Jackie Bluett stated that the
blessing of the Labyrinth is to be held on 10/17/06. She requested empty milk
containers as a luminary is planned. Jackie gave a brief overview of the success
of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius program now in progress and also told
us that financial help is available for anyone who desires to attend the
Community on Catholic Action dinner but is without funds to do so. Also, Social
Action, Membership and Spiritual Development committees are coordinating in the
production of a Posada to be done on church grounds on 12/16/06.
Barb Pistillo, Chair of the Membership Committee, provided a hand-out
giving details on their meeting at which the current status of the Clustering
Process was discussed. In the CSM, we define members as those who re-commit
every year. We are unique in this aspect as we do not keep a record of
contributions (by which other parishes define their membership) but rather
require recommitment process to encourage active participation by each member.
Discussed possibly having recognition of members at a future Liturgy in an
effort to encourage others who are considering membership. Prospective Member
meetings will be held every other month in the future and a Welcome Series is
planned for 11/5/06. It was noted that when a person changes parishes, it is
his/her responsibility to inform the “old” parish that they will no longer
be attending there.
For the Christian Formation Committee, Diane Brinich reported a
collective effort by six students from the senior high youth group, together
with Karen Duffy and Rick Zimmerman, in painting the library in
the old school building. This area is now much more welcoming than it had been
previously. Christian Formation classes have enrolled 106 students this year.
Parents will be supporting the many activities of our students.
In the absence of Helen Misener, Fran DeChant gave the report for the Social
Action Committee and passed out information on their September meeting. Lisa
Moser will be following up regarding support for refugee families. The
committee will be contacting Transitional Housing down the street regarding the
possibility of volunteers from the CSM. Holiday baskets have been ordered
through the rectory and volunteers are sought. Sr. Francis will
coordinate. Malachi Ministries is sponsoring a fundraising effort at Max &
Erma’s on Oct. 12 to support Malachi House; on 11/10 there will be a benefit
for the WSCC. Tomorrow night (9/29) is the St. Malachi Parish fundraiser.
The potluck for members of Council - last year and this year – was
again discussed and Bob Simoneau’s was selected for the location as it
was felt this would be most convenient. “Significant Others” of Council
members will be included.
Under Discussion Items, Kay Vine stated that the Cluster Team has
organized results from the recent survey and the CSM meeting. These showed that
considering the current cluster proposals, most CSM members preferred cluster #1
with the other West Side parishes. These results must be turned in to the
diocese and Kay will handle that. We are to receive the first response from the
diocese on 12/1/06. Kay shared hand-outs of the Overall Timeline for Vibrant
Parish Life – Phase II.
There was some discussion as to how much weight our preference will carry in
the final decision. Also, Fran DeChant questioned whether the “show of
hands” vote at the CSM meeting was sufficient under the charter to reflect the
will of the CSM. Coletta Taddeo moved to accept the vote, Barb
Pistillo seconded the motion and the motion passed in Council. Going
forward, the Cluster Leadership Team will meet again on Oct. 24 to pursue
questions which have come up during the clustering process, i.e. the meaning of
Lay Leadership.
Fr. Tony suggested that we think more about collaboration with the
Parish, i.e. Lisa Moser could have spoken at the 9:30 and possibly the
4:30 Masses and coffee hours regarding help for refugees, thus more efficiently
utilizing her as a resource. Fran DeChant pointed out that this was
difficult to coordinate as the parish does not have a Social Action committee
chair with whom to facilitate arrangements. It was pointed out that Kay Vine,
as VP, is our representative to the Parish Council. Coletta Taddeo said
that she worked very well with the Parish member on the picnic. Jackie Bluett
spoke about the CSM Spiritual Development Committee working with a
representative from the parish. It was noted that there could be more work on
sharing ideas through Communications, i.e. Bob Simoneau suggested
possibly a “News from the Parish” section in our newsletter.
As an addition to his earlier Finance Committee Report, Bob said that
the next Finance Committee meeting is scheduled for 10/10/06. He stressed the
need to figure out a way to begin paying down our debt to the diocese. Fr.
Tony suggested running an explanatory chart as an attachment to the
newsletter in the week of the financial appeal.
All were encouraged to think about what “Lay Direction” means to us. This
is on the agenda for the November meeting. Areas of the charter need to be
updated or clarified and Jim Connell wants to begin work on this. It was
suggested that the first meeting of a group to discuss these matters might be
held on 10/24.
The next Council meeting will be held on 11/2/06. The meeting
was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Ellen McIntyre, Interim Secretary.
