St. Malachi Center Thanks all who brought it school clothes and school
supplies. “We especially thank Brian Kennard for the awesome flute
concert last Saturday (where we received most of the school supply donations),
along with Charlene McElwee and the Kennard family for lovely
performances in and support of the recital. The supplies are being distributed

(Following is the text of a letter sent to Bishop Lennon by the CSM Sexual
Abuse Task Force.)
August 22, 2006
Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon
Bishop of Cleveland
1027 Superior Avenue
Cleveland, Ohio 44114
Dear Bishop Lennon:
We write as members of the Sexual Abuse Task Force of the
Community of St. Malachi which began meeting in the spring of 2003. We have
continued to meet regularly to address issues related to the sexual abuse crisis
in the Catholic Church.
During the past several years the scandal of the sexual abuse
of children by priests has been undermining the faith and loyalty of lay people
in the Catholic Church throughout the country. We realize that steps have been
taken to prevent this abuse in the future even as incidents of abuse continue to
be reported. Our concern now is focused on that past insofar as there are still
unresolved concerns. There are still victims who do not yet have the courage to
reveal the abuses they have suffered.
The general failure throughout the country to tell us, the
people in the pews, the full extent of the financial outlay that has been
incurred continues to imply a lack of trust or confidence in our faith. Some
Dioceses, including Dubuque, Spokane, Tucson, Louisville, Baltimore and Orange
County, have been much more confident of the faith of their people by providing
full and detailed disclosures of financial costs and the acknowledgement and
apologies for past failures.
Bishop Anthony Pilla’s message of February, 2004, followed
by the annual reports of the Diocese in 2004 and 2005 was a start. However, we
believe that as supporting members of the Catholic community, we have a right to
a more detailed disclosure. The costs for treatment and counseling of the
victims; the costs for treatment and counseling of the priests/lay abusers; the
costs of the legal representation for the Diocese as well as lobbyists to the
State Legislature by the Ohio Conference of Bishops are all unknown to us.
Additionally, we have a right to know the number of victims who may have been
denied adequate compensation because of the assertion of the Statute of
Limitations.
We also urge Diocesan Officials to press for prompt
resolution of the status of priests removed from active ministry and placed on
administrative Leave.
We will continue to support our church and expect the trust
we ask for from our Bishops will be forthcoming.
We thank you and look for your help in resolving our ongoing
concerns.
Sincerely,
Kathleen A. Burke, Chair
Sexual Abuse Task Force
Community of St. Malachi
