The Community of St. Malachi – First Personal Parish of the Diocese of Cleveland
Celebrating Faith in God and in the Future!

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time

November 13, 2005

W H A T   I S   SB17 ?

Here’s a report from Marty Miller of the CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse:

“Ohio Senate Bill 17 would

  1. extend the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits involving all child sex abuse cases to 20 years beyond the point at which the victim turns 18;

  2. add priests, rabbis, ministers and other non-volunteer church leaders to the list of those mandated to contact authorities when they ‘reasonably suspect’ child abuse or neglect, and

  3. open a one-time, one-year window for victims of abuse as long ago as 1970 to seek their day in court.

“The CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse has invited Ohio Sen. Robert Spada to speak to the task force and other CSM members on the importance of SB17. He will worship with us at our 11 o’clock Liturgy Sunday, Nov. 20, then give us a brief presentation during our coffee hour. (Christian Formation members will ‘mind the children’ during the presentation.)

“Last year our task force circulated a petition for a senate bill, SB100, with two additional provisions regarding the statute of limitations and a one-year ‘look back window.’ The task force again strongly supported this bill. This year it passed unanimously in the Senate but is again stalled in the House. The CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 1, in the rectory to discuss how we can support SB17. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. If you cannot, but have ideas, please call Kathy Burke (216-228-6767) or e-mail me, Marty Miller, at mgm@stratos.net

The purpose of this celebration is to enrich our children’s liturgical experience of God’s presence in the ritual proclamation of the word. This year all children aged 6 and older are invited to participate. We thank you for your continued support of this program.” –

Message from Jackie Bluett:

St. Malachi Center activities of October, 2005.

The Ministry of St. Malachi Center is to nourish families and youth of Cleveland’s Near West Side in spirit, mind and body, and to support their self-development.

“It has been almost a year since I started the series about some of the ministries of the Community of St. Malachi with a reflection about St. Malachi Center. It is also a little over a year since I started working at St. Malachi Center. I am amazed at Gods work, through the center’s activities, healing individuals and families (participants, volunteers and staff) and bringing us in closer relationship with the Creator. It was suggested I share some of what I see with the Community of St. Malachi. I think it is appropriate since, as I understand it, St. Malachi Center was among the first ministries born of the CSM’s response to God’s love for us. It is among the many ways the CSM sets our love of God into action.

“October was a blessedly busy month which included continuing the After School Program (ASP), strengthening the ASP’s volunteer base, creating two teen nights, and doing what is done every day, every month.

“There are over 80 children registered for the ASP, with about 70 from CMHA housing. Over 60% of the registrations are in kindergarten through 4th grade. Each week includes a field trip. In October the trips included roller skating, the downtown library, and Patterson Apple Farm. The other days include play time, homework time, snack time, and Friday party time. Regularly scheduled volunteer events consist of: a birthday party on the third Monday of every month celebrating birthdays in that month, thanks to Cargill Deicing; homework help on Wednesdays from Baldwin Wallace students, on Thursdays from Lutheran Metropolitan YAARP Junior and from individuals who have become part of the volunteer help over the past few years. Starting Nov. 15, seven St. Ignatius juniors and seniors are coming to the center every Monday and Tuesday to help the children with their homework. Reading Buddies is also a volunteer group coordinated by the center. This year there are 26 committed people who volunteer regularly or as substitutes to help improve reading skills of many ASP students,

“Also in October, two Teen Nights (Wednesday and Thursday) were started and were immediately successful. More than 50 teens are showing up each Teen Nights. Wednesday night, Teen Sense, is more for “nourishing…mind” with homework and college and career preparation activities. Thursday is Awesome Activity Night, a more ‘nourishing spirit’ program through social and teamwork activities that included making pretzels and stenciling T-shirts last month. The teens, too, have earned field trips which included roller skating and a hayride.

“Other regular programs included Family Activity Night, Showers for the Homeless. Sewing with Friends on Mondays, Women in Friendship on Tuesdays, Visions on Thursday evenings, Computer Basics on Thursday evenings, Soup with God at lunch time on the second and fourth Fridays of each month, and the Clothing Ministry on the third Sunday every month.

“The joint Social Action Committee is working toward combining special holiday events with the center this year, including a Tree Trimming Party on Dec. 3, caroling on Dec. 11, and Posadas sometime on the third weekend of December.

“If you have time and would like to experience some of the love of God and for God in action, please call to volunteer: 216-771-3036, Ext. 15.” - J.B.

St. Malachi Center is also advertising an opening for a marketing assistant. “Duties include: developing newsletters, managing data bases, creating flyers and brochures for small non-profit, part-time. Some college and experience with Microsoft Office and web design and implementation preferred. Send resume to HR, 2416 Superior viaduct, Cleveland OH 44113.”
