Celebrating Faith in God and in the Future!

11th Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 12, 2005

W H A T   I S   P R A Y E R ?

A Message from the CSM Spiritual Development Committee…

“Prayer is much more than giving God a list of stuff you want done for you.

“It is more to do with spending time enjoying God’s company, a bit like you would do with your best friend. Asking questions, asking about your family and friends and wondering about the future, saying ‘sorry’ and saying ‘thank you,’ listening to what they have to say, not worrying about silence, just glad to be with them.

“There are many different types of prayer and in the next few months we will be reviewing prayer and asking you to focus on the specific prayer of the month.

“Some of the topics will be:
Personal prayer: Time you spend alone with God.
Public prayer: Time you pray together during Mass or special occasions.
Meditative prayer: Use of meditation (thinking deeply) about God.
This prayer involves finding 15 minutes to be alone with God.
Healing prayer: Praying with a healing group.

“These are just a few types of prayer for you to reflect on. We will also present ideas on how to reflect on these prayers.”

CSM Spiritual Development Committee, Nickie Stary, Chair.

MEN’S RETREAT - OCT. 21-23

All men at St. Malachi are invited to a men’s retreat Oct. 21-23. It will be led by Br. Joe Kilikevice, a Dominican friar from Chicago, who has been directing retreats for men since 1986. Several Malachi members have attended retreats led by Br. Joe and, based on their positive feedback, we have decided to bring him to Cleveland. The retreat will help men move beyond their cultural stereotypes and deal constructively with issues including work, family, spirituality and sexuality. The retreat will be held at St. Joseph Christian Life Center, 18485 Lakeshore Blvd., Cleveland, and the cost is $250 ($225 for early registration). Scholarships are available since we do not want cost to be a barrier for any man who wants to attend. Fliers with more information are available at the doors of the church. The retreat is co-sponsored by the Community of St. Malachi and St. Malachi Parish.

For information call Mike Graham (216-228-8815), Gary Pritts (216-233-4960) or

Dave Kennard (216-661-7130).

COMPANIONS ON THE JOURNEY

Copies of the inaugural issue of Companions on the Journey can be found at the doors of the church. This monthly leaflet features the Gospel for each Sunday, with a reflection and prayer, as well as Psalm verses for reflection and other articles. This is a new initiative from St. Malachi staff members Mary Jane Treichel and Kimberly Kramer-Tatro, created especially for those who are homebound, ill or for any reason unable to attend Sunday Mass. If you know anyone who may benefit from Companions on the Journey, please pick up a copy.

VINE AND BRANCHES GOSPEL DISCUSSION FORUM

www.stmalachi.org/parish/forum

This is the link to St. Malachi’s “Vine and Branches Gospel Discussion Forum” which allows Community of St. Malachi and St. Malachi Parish members to link to the readings for the upcoming Sunday’s Liturgy of the Word and, if so moved, to post a reflection. In addition to spiritual preparation for each Sunday’s Liturgy, the forum provides a format for deepening our understanding of God’s Word and its impact in our lives through shared reflection.

CSM CHEERS DEPARTMENT - Let’s hear it for Jim Connell and Roseann Kaminsky, as they join this month the ranks of revered retirees. Jim is retiring from his position of many years as superintendent of schools for the Berea Board of Education (but not from his new status as CSM Communications Chair, thank heaven!). Roseann is signing off from 42 years in nursing education, the last 16 as a faculty member at Lorain County Community College. May they both enjoy a good rest, good health and some good fun!

CSM CONGRATULATIONS to these CSM members who “made out” as winners in the St. Malachi Center Memorial Day raffle. First place went to Jan Galvin, who bought her ticket from Lisa Flaherty, Third prize winner was Peter Toomey. (A good bet is that Lisa will have ‘em standing in line for tickets next year…)

SAVE THE DATE – SATURDAY, JULY 30

As part of the celebration of the 140th anniversary of St. Malachi Parish, there will be a celebration of its dedicated lay and clerical staff from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, July 30, right here in the hall. There will be catering by Massimo’s, entertainment by a dulcimer band and the St. Ignatius High School circus group, and some more surprises. As the parish’s program arrangers put it, “All this for a paltry $15 per person.” More details are to come.

ANOTHER BIG DATE – SATURDAY, JULY 2

In connection with the July 4th Superior Viaduct Holiday Celebration, St. Malachi Center will host the Old Angle Family Fun Festival from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 2. Featured will be live Irish entertainment as well as many traditional carnival games such as milk can toss, dart balloon game, lollipop tree, frisbee toss, duck pond and guessing game. Other activities during the course of the day include face painting, water balloon walk, limbo and hoola hoop contests and for the first time, marshmallow golf. Also on site will be free health screens for blood sugar and high blood pressure as well as several community resources with valuable information. Last but not least, there will be an assortment of delicious carnival foods. For information call Jackie Bluett, 216-771-3036.

S.M.A.R.T. PARENTS SUMMER MOVIES

(St. Malachi Adults Raising Tots, Tweens, Teens…)

“We are again planning to enjoy family movies at Lakewood Park. They begin at dusk. We will meet at approximately 6:30 p.m. near the Kiwanis Pavilion for a picnic supper and playground fun, and then wander over to the movies at sundown. Feel free to join in for one or both parts of the evening. If you come early for the picnic, bring your own meat to grill, drinks, picnic supplies, and a dish to pass. It’s a low stress way to enjoy a summer evening. The remaining movie schedule for Lakewood Park:

  • June 24: Spirit: Stallion of Cimmaron;
  • July 8: “Daddy Day Care (PG);
  • July 22: “Muppets from Space;
  • Aug. 12: “Shark Tale (PG).

In the event of inclement weather, we will not picnic; however, films will be shown at 8 p.m. in the Emerson Middle School Gym. Look for the sign posted by the Lakewood Recreation Department at the entrance of Lakewood Park.

Please join us for summer fun and fellowship!” - Mike Pellegrino and Carol Schiro, 216-351-8553.

MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE

In June, we offer our prayers and support to our neighbors at the Lakeview High Rise. We know that many of the senior citizens who live there must do without things that we often take for granted. Money for leisure time activities is hard to come by after buying food and medicine. The Common Room is where neighbors come together for companionship and entertainment. They need playing cards, puzzles, board games, crossword and other puzzle books, and the like, to keep in the Common Room for all to share. Can you donate an item from the list to support this effort? A box for your donation is at the front of the church. For more information call us:

Lois Westerkamp (440-331-3705) or Joyce Geib (216-521-4252).”
