Celebrating Faith in God and in the Future!

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 23, 2005

WHAT CAUSED THE SEX ABUSE CRISIS?

That’s the title of an attached pamphlet about the findings of the Church’s National Review Board. A second attached pamphlet describes the Cleveland diocese’s Virtus “Plan to Protect God’s Children.” CSM members are asked to review these attachments in preparation for a special community “get together” scheduled for SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 6,immediately following our 11 o’clock Liturgy

This meeting will be conducted by our CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse to bring us up to date on the crisis in our Church.

All CSM members are urged to attend!

Questions? Call Kathy Burke (216-228-6787) or Marty Miller (216-531-9293). (Also, please note. The task force meeting originally scheduled for this past Thursday has been changed to this coming Thursday, Jan. 27, in the rectory. All welcome.)

FURTHERMORE

In a special meeting held Sunday, Jan. 16, the CSM Community Council voted unanimously to co-sponsor with FutureChurch a presentation by Justice Anne Burke . She is former chair of the National Review Board and will discuss its recommendations and how laity can support their implementation.

7 p.m. Wednesday, March 2 River’s Edge at St. Joseph Center, 3430 Rocky River Dr., Cleveland Questions? Call FutureChurch, 216-228-0869

Message from Rose Horning: “As a follow-up to the Advent Series on Living Peace, yard signs promoting peace and non-violence are now available. They may be purchased at coffee hour with a donation of $5 per sign. They are fairly weatherproof and come with a metal bracket. Look for them as you enter the hall.” - R. H.

Join the conversations: The St. Malachi’s Vine and Branches Gospel Discussion Forum allows CSM members and St. Malachi parishioners to link to the Scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday’s Liturgy of the Word and, if so moved, to post a reflection. In addition to spiritual preparation for Sunday’s Liturgy, the forum provides a format for deepening our understanding of God’s Word and its impact in our lives through shared reflection. Visit the forum at www.stmalachi.org/parish/forum. Anyone wishing to have the forum electronically delivered each week, please send an e-mail to vineandbranchesforum@hotmail.com using the words “add forum” to the subject line.

Message from Rev. RALPH WIATROWSKI, Chancellor, Diocese of Cleveland: “Catholics across the Diocese of Cleveland will soon be receiving a large envelope at home from the office of Bishop Anthony M. Pilla. ‘A Report to the Community from the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland 2004’ is an initial effort to better acquaint everyone with the extensive temporal, spiritual, educational and charitable contributions made by the people of the diocese. This annual report also includes a financial overview. Your attention to this document is appreciated.” - Rev. R.W.

Another message from KAY VINE(this is excerpted from her Jan. 2 Communion reflection):

“Thirty years ago, the CSM was established as an official parish of the Diocese of Cleveland. It actually had its beginnings eight years earlier – in late 1967 – as a small group began responding to the call of the Second Vatican Council. They gathered each Sunday for the celebration of the Liturgy in this church at 11 a.m. Gradually, the formation of “community” began with some home-based prayer times and liturgical services, as well as social (really, ‘food-based’) gatherings. Challenging conversations and an activist spirit led to the formation of committees to address needs of this particular neighborhood and eventually the organization of a new type of parish – one personally chosen by its members.

“These were remarkable times, both in social climate and church culture! The growth of this new parish also was remarkable. A vibrant sense of faith and the beauty of spiritual life was witnessed. The importance of stewardship for an area of this city that was not one’s own backyard was also part of the active expression of living the Gospel. Those, of course, continue today.

“In this 30th anniversary year, the Community of St. .Malachi continues to be challenged to its ‘groundbreaking’ call.Rich FAITH IN God established a history. The work of the CSM and its many partners – especially St. Malachi Parish – help bring HOPE to many each day. The call of the future is OUR RESPONSE to God’s call to LOVE in the continued living of faith as a community. ..” - K.V.
