MESSAGE FROM CHARLENE MCELWEE

This should be YOUR weekend at Blossom! Our very own cantor extraordinaire SUE COLSON is a member of the Blossom Festival Chorus that is singing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony tonight (Jul 25) at 7:00 p.m. Come support Sue and hear some wonderful music.

Save the date! On Saturday evening Aug 14 at 7:30 p.m., flutist Bryan Kennard will present a recital. Bryan is a Music Education major entering his junior year at Mercyhurst College and has played at both the 9:30 and 11:00 Masses. All are welcome!

We are interested in forming a funeral choir here at St. Malachi. If you are usually free in the morning and would love to be able to minister in song, this is a great opportunity for you. The first gathering will be in early September, date and time to be announced in the near future. For further information or just to chat about the idea, call Charlene McElwee at the rectory or Teresa Andreani at221-9356.

MESSAGE FROM BARBARA STARRE: Two years ago this past June, my best friend was diagnosed with advanced bone marrow cancer, multiple myeloma. Dave was in severe pain caused by multiple bone fractures in his ribs and spine and was extremely anemic.

He underwent 5 months of intense drug therapy that successfully reduced the bone marrow tumors allowing the healthy cells to reproduce again. Each month Dave has blood work done at the Moll Cancer Center and sees his oncologist, Dr. Tim Spiro, every three months. Since completing the initial treatment Dave has felt good but each month the malignant bone marrow tumors continue to produce an increasing number of abnormal plasma cells. Dr. Spiro told Dave at his last visit that he is anemic again, so along with Thalidamide, which Dave has taken for a year and a half, he will also need to take steroids. Dave believes he is doing well because of prayers, good food and a positive attitude. Both Dave and I are full of gratitude for all the support and prayers the people of St. Malachi’s Community have given us. I believe Dave can be healed of this disease even though no one thus far has overcome it. I believe that there is tremendous power in the combined prayer of many so I am asking anyone who is so inclined to pray for Dave every evening at 7 p.m. I chose that time because it is Dave’s favorite number and I asked for prayer each evening because when we forget we still have all the other evenings left. I ask that the prayer just last a few seconds and that it be a feeling as if someone has just told you that Dave’s cancer is gone. I love this form of prayer. I invite all of us to use it to feel what it would feel like to live in a peaceful world – to feel how it would feel to have those we love and know who are ill healed. That’s it – what a great way to pray and it all begins within our hearts. We can use the 7 p.m. time each evening to engage our emotions and feelings for a few seconds. We can pray for Dolly Chura, Mary Englert, Mary Laubenthal and all the others who are healing – just a simple feeling based prayer – that’s all and that’s enough. Thank you all for your magical prayers. Much Love, Peace, and Joy, Barbara Starre.

CSM COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

July 11 Meeting – Rosemary Etheart’s House

(Reported by Ron Perger, Communications Committee Chair)

Mary Carol Lucic opened the meeting with a prayer.

There was a discussion and review of the policy and procedures for the council. A motion was made by Ed Shemo to maintain the current At-Large members terms of expiration to be two expiring this council year and four the following vs. three and three. This applies only to the current council and is not precedent setting. Mary Carol Lucic seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously.

Finance Committee Report:

The finance committee reported that there was a $3,800 surplus left over from last year.

Ed Shemo prepared a list of current costs for running St. Malachi’s operations so that council could determine CSM’s fair share of expenses. A discussion ensued regarding CSM’s fair share commitment to the Parish with regard to salaries and expenses. Finance council will continue discussion at their August meeting and bring forth a recommendation to the Community Council in September. Further discussion regarding finances involved the idea of Stewardship and how we can get Community members to understand the concept of sharing their time, talent and treasure for the good of the Community. Council discussed and agreed that Stewardship should be a major area of focus for the coming year. More concrete discussion on this will occur at the September meeting.

After a reading of the current CSM Mission Statement, Council further discussed the questions of “Who are we? And why are we here?” Nicky Stary shared that her committee’s goal statement for the year is “Out of prayer comes courage.” Council decided to undertake this discussion at a future meeting.

The meeting ended at 6:30 pm when last year’s council joined us for a potluck dinner.
