CSM Council Meeting Highlights

June 6, 2004 – St. Malachi Center

(Reported by Joe Pulizzi, outgoing Communications Committee Chair)

Discussion – President Luis Gutierrez reiterated that the May meeting is the normal meeting where we discuss the budget, which is then voted on for approval in June. For a variety of reasons, there was no May meeting. Thus, tonight’s meeting will include a complete discussion of the budget. After discussion, the proposed budget will be attached to the June 13th edition of The Newsletter, giving community members time to review it.

Action Items

For the 2005-2006 school year, Urban Community School (UCS) will be in a new building. At this time, the St. Malachi school building will be available for other users/uses. Most of the furnishings in the building belong to the school, so the rooms will be empty. The new school will be built at W. 48 and Lorain. Groundbreaking ceremonies are set for Jun 15 at 11 a.m.

There are three principles that have emerged from this UCS issue:

1. All those currently using the school building will continue to be able to do so; no current users will be evicted from use of the school building.

2. The school building will continue to be used as a multi-use facility. No group will have exclusive access to the facility.

3. The expectation is that space in the school building ordinarily will be shared by several users.

Note: UCS does not pay rent now, but our diocesan dues are lower because St. Malachi is considered “with school.” Therefore, it is likely that our dues will rise do to not having a school on location.

It was moved and seconded to affirm the three principles above. Motion was approved.

Resolution to Parish Council:

Bill Schubmehl moves to congratulate Parish Council on their Jun 2nd dated letter to the Bishop regarding FutureChurch. Gene Kramer amended this by moving that CSM would like to join the Parish in this movement. Bill’s original movement reads as follows:

”The Council of CSM wishes to congratulate the Parish Council for their courageous position regarding FutureChurch. That position is expressed in their letter to Bishop Anthony Pilla dated June 2, 2004.”

Moved by Bill Schubmehl. Seconded by Gene Kramer. Motioned passed unanimously.

Discussion Items

2004-2005 Proposed Budget.

Ed Shemo passed out the current income statement for Council to review. The Finance Council has put together a recommended budget, but as of this point, nothing has changed since there has been no formal CSM Council approval.

Recommendations to CSM Council (as noted in the CSM Finance Council Meeting, May 27, 2004) ”That the Community bring our current fiscal year fair share of operating costs back to the previous rate of 29% of regular collection and make up the annual difference in June, 2004. That the Community retain the remaining projected surplus of approximately $7,300 as a reserve toward next year’s lofty goals of increased collections. That the Community reinstate the previous fair share of 29% for the coming fiscal year. That the Community begin to pay the Diocesan assessment in whole in the coming fiscal year. That the Finance Council take on the responsibility to appeal to our members for increased contributions to sustain our financial position.”

Gene Kramer made a point that our Committees don’t feel we have additional monies to operate individual missions. Gene voiced concerns over using the surpluses to give back to the Parish without first looking sufficiently at our Community needs, especially our support to Related Ministries.

Ed Shemo and Luis Gutierrez discussed the importance of paying for our “fair share.” The CSM finance council will continue to meet with the Parish Finance Council to ascertain exactly what our rightful fair share is. Joe Mohar discussed at length about the impact our ministries have made, and the need to give our fair share, and possibly even more.

Movement to accept proposed budget made by Bill Johansen, second by Pat Burns. This proposed budget will be presented to the community for approval. Motion passed. This motion does not approve the budget, but makes the proposed budget available for the Community to review.

Wednesday, Jun 23, 7 p.m. at St. Malachi Center will be the meeting to vote on the budget.

2004-2005 CSM Council Elections – Congratulations to newly elected President Bill Johansen and Vice President Rosemary Etheart.

This Message from Fr. Tony:

SPRING/SUMMER ROAD CONSTRUCTION NEAR ST. MALACHI - UPDATE

“We have been informed by the project managers of the road construction project that the section of W. 25 Street directly in front of the church will be closed for repaving during an upcoming weekend (perhaps in June), but there is no decision yet about which weekend this will take place. We were assured that there will be at least two weeks prior notice and that we will be given flyers showing how the traffic will be routed for the weekend. From the explanation of the plan, disruption should be minimal. The managers also reported that the project is ahead of schedule.” - AJS
