A CSM “Ancient” Tradition Revived…
|
6 p.m. - Wednesday of Holy Week – April 7 – in the Hall
In its early days, the Community of St. Malachi found the Seder Meal a
popular spiritual observance. It is the ritual dinner which commemorates the
Israelites’ exodus from Egypt, the Passover.
Says Rosemary Gaffney Etheart: “The Seder is a Meal of Thanksgiving for God’s
role in the deliverance, redemption and protection of the chosen people. We
celebrate the Seder Meal as a spiritual community to join together in fellowship
and thanksgiving for our place as heirs of Abraham and Sarah, and children of
God.”
RSVP needed. Before Thursday, April 1. Table sign-up available at coffee
hour. Or call Michelle Johansen (440-353-0606) or Rosemary (440-356-9920). Main
dish will be provided. Participants are asked to bring a salad, side dish or
dessert for their table.

COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Mar. 7, 2004 Meeting - St. Malachi Center
(Reported by Joe Pulizzi, Communications Committee Chair)
Special thanks expressed to Dolores Sullin for the job she is doing on the
E-Mail Alert system. Great job, Dolores!
Action Items
Possible Letter re St. Ed’s/FutureChurch function. St. Edward High
School agreed to house a Future-Church function featuring Bishop Albert
Ottenweller. Due to outside pressure from the diocesan chancellor and the Save
Our Church organization, St. Ed’s decided to withdraw permission for the
function to be held at the school. Council decided to send a letter to the
president of St. Ed’s outlining our disappointment at the action. Letter would
come from members of council and be signed individually by council members and
other community members.
Motion passed with following amendments: Letter will be sent by council,
penned by Gene Kramer. He will notify Mary Englert to get information in the CSM
Newsletter and ask individual members to submit their thoughts directly. Letter
will be sent to the president of St. Ed’s, cc’d to Save our Church and the
chancellor of the Diocese of Cleveland.
Form Nominating Committee:
We will be communicating that nominations are upcoming in all announcements
up to the annual meeting, as well as in the next newsletter. It was discussed
that the committee should have members that are mostly not on council. Nick
Aylward and Joe Pulizzi will be on the nominating committee, as well as Pam
Pulizzi.
Discussion Items
Open Forum follow-up: Gene Kramer suggested a “thank you” letter to
Sr. Pat Kozak for her tremendous work. (Luis Gutierrez will draft a letter.)
Gene Kramer also suggested the following: “The Liturgy Committee is
requested to undertake a thorough and systematic review of all aspects of the
CSM’s liturgical practices and procedures.for the purpose of determining what,
if any, changes in those practices and procedures should be recommended, along
with a timetable and proposed method for introduction and implementation of any
such recommended changes." ”Motion passed.
It was also suggested that the Open Forums continue every six months in some
format.
Following up on presentations by Tony Vento regarding specialized housing and
St. Procp: Luis Gutierrez talked about setting up a visit for CSM membership…get
a date and get it in the newsletter. Luis will follow up with council on what
the date will be. Fr. Tony Schuerger mentioned the importance of looking at St.
Malachi’s involvement in this project for the long term.
Agenda for Annual Meeting (Apr. 25): Please get any agenda items to Luis
Gutierrez as soon as possible (Sexual Abuse Task Force, Finances, etc.)
Nominating committee is in charge of ballots, bios, etc. Annual report for all
committees needs to be organized. Reports should be due by next council meeting.
Bill Johansen will arrange childcare for the meeting.
New member sign-up procedures: There has been some confusion reported by
members as to whether they were signing up for the Community of St. Malachi or
St. Malachi Parish. Discussion followed as to the possible reasons and remedies.
Gene Kramer recommended a one-page FAQ sheet. (Mary Englert was suggested as a
possible volunteer for this.)
Much was discussed about the committee process breaking down, mostly due to
lack of volunteers. Gene discussed the idea of using at-large council members to
help committee heads recruit. ( Continued on Page 4)

Message from Peter Toomey: About the ‘SOUP FOR THE SOUL’
Benefit
-
“The money you will help us raise at this Thursday’s benefit is critical.
Without it, St. Malachi Center can’t afford some of the programs and services
it offers to those we serve. Please attend the Soup for the Soul! There’s fun
for you, too. Silent auction items, as always. And a raffle: more exciting, more
varied, more accessible, more fun. More opportunities to win, with three levels
of raffle prizes, at three different ticket prices. Adding excitement throughout
the evening will be random drawings for door prizes for those present. Door
prizes will be free.
Sixty-six people have donated cash as “friends” and sponsors; 35
restaurants have donated soups, appetizers and desserts; 222 auction and raffle
prizes are being sorted; 27 artists have donated bowls as centerpiece prizes.
Now all we need is YOU!
Make a reservation TODAY!
6 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 4, LaCentre Banquet Center, 25777 Detroit Rd.,

St. Malachi Center’s Employment Practices and the CSM’s continued
support; discussion led by Bill Schubmehl.
Much discussion regarding some of the human resources events that have
happened at the Malachi Mart. There was frank and honest discussion about the
mart’s practices as they pertain to employment practices. Gene Kramer
suggested having someone from the St. Malachi Center board come to have a
general discussion with the council. Bill Johansen will call the president of
the center board to invite her to our next council meeting. The entire topic was
raised as an agenda item for the next council meeting.
Optional Priestly Celibacy: Chris Schenk spoke about this issue. Chris is
trying to educate Catholic communities about the many challenges with this issue
and others going forward (celibacy, Eucharist, priest shortage – and our
responsibilities as Catholics). There will be a presentation on this on the
Feast of Corpus Christi, June 13. Chris wants to do something like this at St.
Malachi. Chris also said that a petition is going around to open discussion
about mandatory celibacy in the Latin Rite diocesan priesthood. Kathy Burke
would like to develop a group to put this together by June/July or later. We
will put this on the agenda for the April meeting.
Reporting Items
CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse - will continue to meet monthly and keep
focus on accountability. Bill Johansen asked Kathy Burke and the task force to
discuss at their next meeting the issue of announcements, reflections, etc.
being made at Mass and other areas where there is a captive audience. The
concern was that all this talk could raise fears and break down trust with today’s
children. Kathy agreed to discuss it in the group.
Finance Committee - Ed Shemo reviewed the finances. We are behind on
expenses and up on giving. Note that some of this is due to our reductions in
our diocesan and parish support. Ed had a second meeting with the parish. He
will be taking the results of the discussion to the finance council in hopes of
greater collaboration.
