CSM OPEN FORUMS PROMPT NEW, RENEWED
INTERESTS
Some 65 CSM members participated in our second open forum

this time for small-group discussion. Each group would
welcome further input from other CSM members and, as those
examining “lay direction” have been doing since the
first forum last fall, they hope to continue having
get-togethers focused on particular topics.

Council President Luis Gutierrez asks:
“Are You Called to Serve?
“Our Annual Meeting is coming up on Sunday, Apr. 25, and a very important
agenda item will be the election of next year’s CSM Council. Lent provides the
perfect context for asking yourself if you’re called to serve. If you discern
that you are called to give of your time and talent, please call Nick Aylward
(216-228-4332) or Joe Pulizzi (216-941-5054)” -- L.G.

CSM Council President Luis Gutierrez’s Feb. 23
Communion Reflection
Good morning.
This coming Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of Lent, for
Christians a season for reflection, for taking stock, for repentance. It’s a
season during which we ask ourselves how we’re doing – are we heeding the
call to love God with all our hearts, with all our souls with all our minds, and
with all our strength? Are we loving our neighbor as we love ourselves? Today’s
Gospel provides us with a standard against which we can measure how well we’re
doing.
It’s a pretty challenging standard: “Love your enemies, do good to those
who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you…Give
to everyone who asks of you…Be merciful…Stop judging…Stop condemning…Forgive.”
The thing is, you can read this Gospel over and over again and you won’t
find much in the way of wiggle room. It doesn’t say, “Love your enemies
because if you do they’ll eventually come around.” It seems pretty clear
that in Luke we are being asked to bless those who curse us even if they go on
cursing us. That’s not an easy thing, but as disciples of Christ, that’s
what we are called to do.
If you are a member of the Community of St. Malachi, it is in the context of
this kind of reflection, it is during Lent, that we are asked to consider anew
our commitment to our faith community. As rewarding as it often is, community
life can be challenging. In Kathleen Norris’s book, The Cloister Walk, a
Benedictine monk says, “The basis of community is not that we have all our
personal needs met here, or tht we find all our best friends [here]. What we
have to struggle for, and to preserve, is a shared vision of the why, why we
[are] together. It’s a common meaning, reinforced in the scriptures, a shared
vision of the coming reign of God.”
For members of the Community of St. Malachi, the “why we are together” is
this:
| Jesus Christ has called us together as a Catholic
Christian Community in this particular place. Through the scripture,
Christ has given us:
A pattern for our salvation; a living witness of God’s love for
us.
Our mission, therefore, is:
To worship God and celebrate Eucharist together;
To love others the way we are loved by God;
To take time to comfort God’s people;
To provide refuge;
To heal;
To console;
To give hope.
As a pilgrim church continuing the presence of Christ:
We recognize the need to nurture our own personal and spiritual
growth;
We desire to take more seriously the impact of the Gospel in our world;
We commit ourselves to becoming stronger witnesses to the love of God in
Jesus,
who is our hope.
|
Whether you’ve been a member of the Community of St. Malachi for 30 years
or for just this past year, every year during Lent we are asked to recommit
ourselves to our mission; we are asked to give of our time, talent and treasure
as we walk together loving and serving our Lord Jesus Christ. We – together
– are the Community of St. Malachi. We are open to everyone. Join us.

Yet another message from CSM Council President Luis Gutierrez:
TOUR OF PROCOP HOUSE
“This year’s Lenten appeal is designated to support the Specialized
Housing project at St. Procop on West 41st Street. This housing is for men
looking to transfigure their lives, men looking to leave homelessness behind
them. The monies collected during Lent will subsidize one or more rooms for
these men at St. Procop’s. Many CSM members have expressed their interest in
getting involved in supporting this project, not only with their treasure but
also with their time and talent. If you are interested in finding out more about
what is needed at Procop House, Tony Vento the program director for InterAct
Cleveland, has agreed to conduct a tour of the building at 4 p.m. Saturday, Mar.
20. CSM members will be gathering in the St. Malachi parking lot at 3:30 p.m.
that day before heading over to St. Procop’s together for the tour. I urge you
to consider joining us to find out more about this exciting project.” - L.G.
Message from Virginia Gibson:
INTERESTED IN A ‘SINGLES’ GROUP ?
“At the open forum last Sunday (Mar. 7), several of us gathered into a
group to discuss starting a singles group at St. Malachi. We are a group of
individuals looking to make social and spiritual connections and invite other
single adults to join us at coffee hour after the 11 o’clock Mass today (Mar.
14) to discuss the possibilities, benefits and potential of such a group. It is
our hope through Christian fellowship to strengthen and share our faith with
others. Let’s discuss ideas for potential events. If you cannot make the
coffee hour today, but would like information, than please contact Jan Galvin,
440-871-0231 (janicegalvin@earthlink.net) or Virginia Gibson, 216-898-1349
(vgibson@core.com)
- Hope to see you today.” - V.G.

REPORT FROM CSM TASK FORCE ON SEXUAL ABUSE
From Kathy Burke, Chair: “Monthly, a group of men and women continue to
meet to examine and discuss the current crisis. Because of bad weather, we did
not meet in January. We then postponed our February meeting until Mar. 4 so that
we would have available the national study on clergy sexual abuse commissioned
by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and undertaken by the John Jay
College of Criminal Justice, the report of the National Review Board, and the
report on the extent and cost of sexual abuse by clergy and others associated
with the Cleveland Diocese, as well as Bishop Anthony Pilla’s response.
“Task force members discussed the need to focus on this issue and ways to
ensure accountability at the diocesan level. No action plan was identified at
that meeting, but with the CSM Open Forum scheduled for Mar. 7, we hoped to
re-introduce the issue and take input from the community. We also plan to have a
formal statement for approval by the CSM membership at our 2004 Annual Meeting
on Sunday, Apr. 25. The task force will meet Thursday, Mar. 25, to develop this
statement. We meet at 7 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month, in the rectory.
These are open meetings. For information, call me…” - Kathy Burke,
