CSM “MEA CULPA” DEPARTMENT – Apologies to Rosemarie Feighan DeJohn, whose name was inadvertently omitted in our last newsletter as a new member of the Irish American Archives Society Board of Trustees. (Names like Sheehan, Finucane and Englert were not overlooked, of course.) Message from Janelle Schubmehl: “I’d like to thank everyone who has donated Christmas cards for recycling. The card cupboard runneth over! They will be pasted and miraculously formed into new cards. Next fall they will be offered back to you for sale. This will be the proverbial ‘proof of the pudding.’ Will you buy back that which you have donated? If so, then maybe this will be a continuing effort. All profits will be donated to a St. Malachi project yet to be determined. Gratefully…” J.S.
“St. Malachi Center’s annual ‘Soup for the Soul’ Benefit will be 6-10:30 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 1, at La Centre Banquet Facility in Westlake.
Thanks to the generosity of people like you, the center’s ministry is able to
nourish other people in spirit, mind and body to support their self-development.
You’ll join some 700 friends in breaking bread and enjoying soups from some of the best restaurants in and around town. Our $40 ticket is about the least expensive benefit price around these days. We’ve tried to keep it that way. For tickets or to reserve a table, call Jackie Plenzler, 440-808-0455.” - P.T. Message from Mike Pellegrino “This is an open invitation to all St. Malachi young families to join other S.M.A.R.T. (St. Malachi Adults Raising T…) families for Friday Lenten fish fries. Feb. 3, 2004 Meeting - St. Malachi Center (Reported by Bill Johansen, Communications Committee member and Communio editor) Tony Vento, from Interact, gave a presentation on homelessness regarding the “Specialized Housing Collabora- tive.” Specifically, he spoke about Procop House, a pilot program that will house individuals who were homeless and now are transitioning back into the community as contributing citizens. He went on to speak about the many volunteers needed to get this project off the ground. Discussion followed about how CSM can get involved; possible Lenten appeal and/or community building project. ACTION ITEMS Apr. 25 announced as the date for the 2004 CSM Annual Meeting. Mar. 7 announced as the date for the next CSM Open Forum. Discussion held on what should be our next Lenten appeal. Pat Burns spoke about an earlier commit-ment both councils had to assisting developing countries. Council agreed this is certainly of value and talked about the recent Heifer Project during Advent as demonstrating that. Council voted unanimously to adopt the Procop House for this year’s Lenten Appeal. Communication will take place during the announcements prior to the 11 o’clock Liturgy the first Sunday of Lent. Tony Vento will give the Communion Reflection also that day, followed by a presentation at coffee hour. DISCUSSION ITEMS Vibrant Parish Life update: Council voted unanimously to reaffirm Rosemarie DeJohn as co-chair of the VPL Coordinating Committee. Reporting Items Task Force on Sexual Abuse: Next meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in the rectory. (Ed. Note: this date subsequently changed to Thursday, Mar. 3; see notice elsewhere in this newsletter.) Rosemary Etheart informed us that the diocese is developing guidelines for implementing its policy pertaining to sex abuse. Once completed, we will work on how that is rolled out at CSM. Stewardship Task Force: A meeting is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 12, in the rectory to begin planning the St. Patrick’s Day party scheduled for Mar. 12. All welcome to attend. Finance Report: Ed Shemo has an upcoming meeting with Sheila Moorman from the St. Malachi Parish Council to discuss how the two groups can work more collaboratively. General income was up for January. A large donation, separate from general income, was received for the Monday Night Meal. Pastor’s Report: Fr. Tony spoke about the Homelessness Marathon scheduled for Feb. 12. This is a program broadcast on WRUR-91.1 from 7 p.m. 2/12 until 9 a.m. 2/13. It is a national “call-in” that will give the homeless a chance to voice their stories. This year the broadcast will be from our own St. Malachi Center. Chris Schenk spoke about the Corpus Christi Campaign for Optional Celibacy, a program addressing the priest shortage. Chris also passed out a petition for people to sign if they were in favor of optional celibacy for priests. Discussion was moved to the March council meeting. Membership: Cynthia Bender announced that Feb. 15 is ‘New Member Sunday’ when new members will wear green carnations and be introduced at the 11 o’clock Liturgy. A cake will be served at coffee hour. Annual CSM commitment time is coming up; forms will be available at coffee hour from Feb. 29 and throughout Lent. Gene Kramer mentioned that more communion reflections were an expressed desire at the last open forum and that we need to recognize this. It was suggested that the Liturgy Committee should work on making this happen twice a month. Council members should e-mail Joe Wegrzynowski the names of people whom they feel would deliver good communion reflections. Chris Schenk suggested that grandparents or godparents of newly baptized children might be good. -- Bill Johansen
