Message from Liz Galvin:
“Recently I had a flat tire in the parking lot and was stranded there with
my children. I really want to thank Kevin Aylward, Joel Andreani and Doug
Carpenter! In the true St. Malachi spirit, these three guys were out there in
bitter, bitter cold weather. They rallied and got the tire fixed. I want
everyone to know how great they were! - L.G.

MESSAGES FROM CSM COUNCIL PRESIDENT LUIS GUTIERREZ
Here are a few things I think it important to note on your calendar:
“Welcome the Stranger Among Us” - At 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11,
there
will be a presentation sponsored by St. Patrick Parish (Bridge) in St. Malachi
Hall. Theme will be “Welcome the Stranger Among us.” Speakers will be Fr.
Don Dunson, Professor of Ethics at St. Mary Seminary and author of “No Room at
the Table: Earth’s Most Vulnerable Children,” and Marjean Perhot, director
of Migrant and Refugee Services, Catholic Charities Parish Services. Speakers as
well will be recently arrived refugees, who will describe their experiences as
they left behind war and turmoil to begin new lives in the Cleveland area.
Refreshments will be served. Contact Deacon Bill Merriman, if you have
questions, at 216-696-3768 or
billmerriman@sbcglobal.net
Time to Re-up - Ash Wednesday, Feb. 25, marks the beginning of Lent,
a season
of soul-searching and repentance, a season for reflection and taking stock. Not
coincidentally, if you are a member of the Community of St. Malachi, it is a
time for you to re-examine your commitment to our faith community and re-up.
There are practical reasons for why this is important but they pale beside what
I’ll just call “The Real Reason.” Let me quote a passage from our charter:
“We seek, as a community, to reaffirm and live more deeply our original
vision. We recognize that while we come from all over the Cleveland area, St.
Malachi Church is the place where our community began and where it has
flourished. Our roots and our hearts are here. We desire, therefore, to commit
ourselves in a deeper and more lasting way to be a ministering church in this
particular place, to take more seriously the impact of the Gospel in our world,
and become a stronger witness to the love of God in Jesus, who is our hope”
Being a part of the Community of St. Malachi is all about intentionality –
you are here not because you live nearby but because you want to be here,
because there is something about the mission of this particular faith community
that touches you, that resonates.
If you are new to the 11 o’clock Liturgy, if you are new to the Community
of St. Malachi, I urge you to check out our website (www.stmalachi.org
) for
information about our charter, our mission and
our history. Better yet, talk to
the people around you at church who have been with the CSM for a while and have
year after year decided that, yes, this is where they want to be to love and
serve the Lord.
Commitment forms will be available at the membership table during coffee
hours every Sunday from Feb. 29 through Easter Sunday, Apr. 11.
Open Forum - We will be holding our Second Open Forum from 12:30 to 2 p.m.
Sunday, Mar. 7, (please note date change) in St. Malachi Hall. Pat Kozack, CSJ,
who did such a beautiful job facilitating our First Open Forum, has agreed to
again work with us as we work to lift our community and focus on our mission “To
worship God and celebrate Eucharist together;/To love others the way we are
loved by God;/To take time to comfort God’s people;/To provide refuge;/To
heal;/To give hope.” I look forward to seeing everyone there!
Annual Meeting - The date has been set for our 2004 Annual Meeting.
It will
be held following our Liturgy on Apr. 25. The annual meeting is a time for us to
take a look at where we are as a community and to consider what’s next.
Also, it is at the annual meeting that we elect CSM members to serve on our
Community Council. Please consider if you are called to serve. I can only speak
for myself but my time on council these past few years has been a blessing.
There is grace in service and in serving there is grace received. I am
unspeakably grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to serve.
For those families with young children, we will be making arrangements for
childcare. Please come and join us!
-- Luis Gutierrez
