CSM COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
Jan. 6, 2004 Meeting – St. Malachi Center
(Reported by Joe Pulizzi, Communications Committee chair)
Cathy Saegel spoke to the council about how we can spread the word about what
St. Malachi Center is doing. The center is looking for volunteers who want
opportunities to share their gifts. Cathy spent some time talking about some of
the center’s success stories.
Upcoming Event: Malachi Mart – “Grand Reopening Continental Breakfast”
– 10 a.m.-noon, Jan. 20.
ACTION ITEMS
· Finalize format for commitment/recommitment form. Through e-mail, please
get updates to Cynthia Bender.
· Identify Process for Commitment/Recommitment - Many communicated
the importance of committing each year to participating in the CSM. Chairs need
to make a commitment to follow up with people who cite interest in a certain
area. Forms will be available the first Sunday of Lent and every Sunday
thereafter.
The idea was brought up to do a “Recommitment Sunday.” Also discussed was
the idea of processing to coffee hour after Mass to fill out the forms. Many
noted that people don’t realize they need to recommit, and why it is
important. Some also noted that many people attend on a regular basis but have
never committed. It is important to communicate to these people, but not to the
extent of asking too much of them, depending on where they currently are.
In our communications, we must not alienate and we must communicate that it
is okay not to check any boxes. It’s okay to just recommit to the CSM.
Luis Gutierrez plans to talk to the CSM and other plans include the CSM
Newsletter and Communio.
· Open Forum Update – Many of the teams are very active and meeting
regularly. We have received very positive remarks regarding opening
announcements and Mass and the Communion reflection. A few stated that we need
to have reports on what is going on. Should we contact each lead person to get a
report for Communio? The Communications Committee will contact each lead person
to see if they would like to report on their activities.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
· Following up on/tying into Vibrant Parish Life breakout groups – Adult
formation group is having its second meeting this weekend. The youth group is
having a meeting this weekend, as well. PSR group is meeting later this month.
Senior citizen group is going to meet next Sunday.
REPORTING ITEMS
· CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse – Kathy Burke has the final draft of the
letter on financial disclosure. Asked for council’s approval. Council voted to
approve.
Diocese audit has been completed and did pass. NY Times will be running a
story about the inadequacy of the national audit and that some dioceses are not
in good standing.
|
· Stewardship Committee – St. Patrick’s Day party is coming up. Next
meeting is in February.
· Finance Committee – Ed Shemo is working on getting an audit team
together and getting records together before he takes over. Ed is sitting down
with Sheila Moorman to discuss some ideas on how the community and the parish
can better work together.
· Corpus Christi – There is a FutureChurch and Call to Action campaign to
promote optional celibacy in the priesthood. They are collecting signatures now.
Their letter calls for communications to start within the church to promote this
important issue. Council will read it and then discuss it at the next meeting.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION UPDATE
The Christian Formation Program is an active, vibrant part of St. Malachi.
More than 120 students, pre-K through high school, and a dedicated group of
adults work under Religious Education Director Karen Duffy in the classroom, on
retreat, and in community service. Sacramental preparations are held each year,
some in collaboration with neighboring parishes. This year the students have
contributed to the community with the Backdoor Ministry and St. Malachi Center.
Senior High students participated in the National Catholic Youth Conference and
are currently participating in retreat planning with a neighboring parish. –
Rosemary Gaffney Etheart
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE UPDATE
The Membership Committee is currently preparing for the annual recommitment
process. The re-commitment forms have been approved by the CSM Council at the
January meeting. We will now begin the massive task of readying the forms for
distribution. We hope to have the forms ready for distribution at the end of
February. In other Membership Committee news, we will be hosting a Welcome
Sunday on Feb. 15. Green carnations will be distributed to the new members, who
will be announced and welcomed before the beginning of the Liturgy. We will
celebrate with a cake at coffee hour that day. Please plan on joining us on Feb.
15 to welcome the newest members of the Community of St. Malachi - Cynthia
