MESSAGES, MESSAGES – WE’VE GOT MESSAGES…
From Fr. Paul Hritz:
"My thanks to Community of St. Malachi members and St. Malachi parishioners for your kindness and support during my many years at St. Malachi's and on the occasion of my 50th anniversary in the priesthood. I make my own the words of St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians: `I thank my God for you... whenever I think of you. My constant prayers for you are a real joy for they bring back to my mind how we have worked together for the Gospel... it is only natural that I should feel this way about you all - you are very dear to me.' Please keep me in your prayers." - PJH
From Mary Englert:
"I'd like to respectfully echo the words of both Fr. Paul and St. Paul in gratitude for the sympathy, love and prayers received upon the recent death of my brother, Fr. Bill Englert, a classmate of Fr. Paul's. He and Bill's other surviving classmates, together with our Fr. Tony Schuerger and so many, many of you CSM members - you know who you are - so vividly eased the shock and pain of the separation and enhanced the joy of our celebration of Bill's rebirth. `I thank my God for you...' All of you..." MTE
From Mike Pellegrino:
"If you haven't been to the St. Malachi web site lately (www.stmalachi.org) - there is
a new link that is worth checking out. It is a
`Gospel Discussion Forum,' which allows a viewer to link to the readings for the upcoming Sunday's Liturgy of the Word and if so moved, to post a reflection. In addition to spiritual preparation for Sunday's Liturgy, the forum provides a format for deepening our understanding of God's word and its impact in our lives through shared reflection." (www.stmalachi.org/parish/forum/forum_frm.htm
)
From Jeanette Shemo:
"Community of St. Malachi Baptism Schedule - CSM baptisms during the 11 a.m. Mass are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 11, and Sunday, Apr. 18. If you are interested in having your baby baptized at this Mass, please call me at 216-344-3841." - JMS From Peter Toomey:
"After all the Joy, what to do with all the Christmas Cards? Longtime CSM member Janelle Schubmehl will recycle them. Please bring them to her at any of the January coffee hours." (Peter's footnote: "Janelle is also married to CSM Council member Bill Schubmehl.") - PET
From Cindy DiNardo:
(Her daughter, Paula McCullough, with husband Major Brian McCullough and their three small children arrived safely in Seoul, Korea.) "They will be there for about 2 to 2 1/2 years and will appreciate continued prayers for them as they are on the other side of this very scary world." - CD
From Patricia Reilley:
"Many thanks for prayers for my cousin Gary Faerber. This note is from my aunt: `Thanks for all the prayers for Gary ... He was lucky to get out of Iraq ALIVE. On the flight home he was given a round of applause from the passengers, put in first class and was given a bottle of champagne. But he is just happy to finally sleep in his own bed in his own country."' - PR

CSM COUNCIL
MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
|
|
(Presented by Bill Johansen, Communications Committee member and
Communio editor)
The council met Dec. 2, in St. Malachi Center, chaired by
Council President Luis Gutierrez. Council voted unanimously on Ed Shemo to be
the new treasurer for the remainder of the council year. Thank you to Bill
McLaughlin for helping in the transition.
ACTION ITEMS
Process of looking at membership list, specifically those who
have left the CSM.
• Decision made by council to deal with
current issues already identified and not pursue this any further. Efforts to be
spent on providing support and energy to those projects currently underway.
• Discussion ensued about annual recommitment
process. Bill Johansen suggested a "Commitment Sunday" idea where
recommitment forms be completed while in church. Publicity/education in
newsletter would precede this day(s). Idea needs more thought and planning, and
may not be the best use of Liturgy. Annual recommitment process will be put on
January agenda for more in-depth discussion.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
• Fr. Tony spoke about the "Specialized
Housing Collaborative." This community service project addresses the
housing need for men in transition. Is this a project we want to get involved
and partner with in the future, whether it be financial or other?
• Gene Kramer suggested we bring back the
Seder Dinner in 2004 as an opportunity for community building. Rosemary Etheart,
Kathy Burke, Gene Kramer and Cynthia Bender will work with the Liturgy Committee
in planning this event.
Vibrant Parish Life/Open Forum follow-up:
• Karen Duffy spoke about the Christian
Formation Group planning a high school age retreat for March 6-7, 2004. The
title will be "Making Waves." This event will be held on two days,
with no overnight stay.
• Bill Johansen talked about follow-up meeting
regarding the "lay directed" group from the open forum. Meeting was
held at the Horning's home in November, with good attendance. One subgroup that
developed will be working on community building
activities. The next date for the whole group to meet is Dec. 19,
at the Hornings.
REPORTING ITEMS
• Karen Duffy, along with the CSM Christian
Formation group, is planning a "Family Advent Celebration" involving
scripture and song at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Lakewood Park. Fr. Tony
suggested that we may want to connect with St. Malachi Center families for this
and similar programs in the future. A suggestion also was made to extend the
invitation to the parish. Fr. Tony continued about these being great programs in
which to interact with other groups/families on a more collaborative basis.

(Council Meeting Highlights Continued)

• Kathy Burke led a discussion of the Task
Force on Sexual Abuse's letter regarding financial disclosure. Next meeting of
the task force is at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 in the rectory. Kathy also mentioned that
Ohio SB 100, which mandates reporting for anyone under the age of 15, will be
voted on later this month. The clergy-penitent relationship will be honored.
Kathy will work on drafting a summary report on the task force's recent work for
a future Communio
• Bill Johansen reported on the Stewardship
Task Force. A subcommittee is in the beginning stages of planning a St.
Patrick's Day dance/fundraiser. Plans are also in place to make an appeal to the
CSM regarding the gift of giving and stewardship. Gene Kramer asked for
clarification on the direction and purpose of the task force. Bill J. responded
that it is still to address the financial concerns of the CSM, however using
various media to do so, such as community building events and community appeals
regarding stewardship..

Nest CSM Council Meeting 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, St. Malachi
Center, following 6:15 p.m. potluck. All welcome. Info: Luis Gutierrez,

CSM COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE UPDATE
Bill Johansen has volunteered to serve as editor of Communio and
will replace Joe Pulizzi as interim editor. Joe will remain as chief editor for
the time being. 2003 has been a roller coaster year for the committee and
Communio. The committee is continually looking for ways to improve
communications within the CSM. Although always a thin line between providing a
dialogue mechanism to CSM and printing something that may offend some members,
the committee continues its mission to spark communication among all members.
Although not formally in place as of this printing, the committee is continually
refining its process to better serve the needs of the CSM. The committee
realizes that some articles have needed more proper "editing" before
publication, thus requiring a more "fine-tune" process.
The committee is also looking at other options to Communio and
assessing the true need and value of the publication.
The committee is also looking into ways to get Sunday attachments
delivered via e-mail to CSM members who request e-mail delivery. Some members
have shown interest in taking on this task, but as yet nothing is formalized.
Joe Pulizzi, Communications Chair
