His sister Viena, 6. also appeared in the scene. (The director said to him, “Matt, I’ve changed my mind about your scene…I want you to stand next to this little girl when Spiderman lands, but I need you to pretend that she is your little sister!” Matt replied, “But she IS my sister!” The director smilingly said, “That’s good acting!”) Matt later received autographed pictures of himself with star Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi and a badge with his picture and the title “Official Spiderman Sidekick.” The movie will be released next July 4th, ironically coinciding with the end of Matt’s chemotherapy.   CSM COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

(Presented by Joe Pulizzi, Communications Chair)

The council met Sunday, Sept. 7, in St. Malachi Center

Kay Vine addressed council about the Central West District. CSM (through Kay) started attending these meetings in the hope of collaboration with other local churches. Usually 30 to 50 people attend these meetings (over 20 churches involved). Sept. 8 is the first meeting of the year, at St. Augustine. Kay is looking for someone to attend these meetings. (She has been going for seven years.)

This coming Thursday, Sept. 11, Kay urged all of us to start the Peace Prayers (passed out yellow pamphlet). Our Peace Pole to be dedicated at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. Please get as many people as possible involved in the International Day of Peace.

A word about the CSM Archives: Kay is organizing a group to continue organizing the archives – slides, rosters, minutes, financials, miscellaneous objects. Please see Kay if you are interested.

ACTION ITEMS

· Council discussed a possible survey to people who have left the CSM over the last three years. Goal is for this to be a very non-intrusive study to help the community to move forward. Before any final decisions are made regarding a survey, the council is waiting to see a final list from Membership.

· October 19 was set as the date for “An Experiment in Listening and Learning.” This will be an open forum for the CSM using an “Open Spaces” technique suggested by Chris Schenk. Chris, Gene Kramer and Cynthia Bender are heading the team.

Next step is to identify a facilitator. Also need to communicate this to the entire Community of St. Malachi. Plan is to do this again in the Spring if successful.

DISCUSSION ITEMS

· Contributions to clergy retirement fund. This is in the budget for this year. New diocesan proposal looks to adding to the fund. We are already participating. Reason for this increase: fewer priests, fewer people paying in to the retirement fund.

Council agrees that this is an important item – but not currently available to add to our budget due to our financial restrictions. Once the proposal is complete, council to review.

· Joint meeting with St. Malachi Parish in October to prepare for November Confab to discuss ways to collaborate with other parishes. Confab is Nov. 2.

Two full councils to talk about Vibrant Parish Life results, and what’s next for VPL. Motion made to have joint meeting with parish council. Motion passed unanimously.

Luis Gutierrez and Pat Burns will work on a communication piece to the CSM about this. Oct. 7 decided as date.

REPORTING ITEMS

· Hospitality Committee - Mar. 12 reserved for St. Patrick’s Day dance.

· Finance Council – Marianne Kerr summarized the financials. With our changes to the budget last month, we will still be around $1,800 short for the year. Rosemary Etheart noted that our Christian Formation youth group still needs about $5,000 in funding to reach their goal of attending the National Catholic Youth Conference.

Year end statement will be produced Sunday, Sept. 21 (after Communion).

· CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse – Gene Kramer noted a very successful response to petition (314 names) delivered to Luis Gutierrez to be sent to Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives and the Governor of Ohio.

· Communications Committee – Joe Pulizzi asked for submissions to next Communio. Deadline is Sept. 14. Send to Joe at joe_pulizzi@yahoo.com.

· Spiritual Development – met about a week and a half ago. They are looking at adult faith formation options, book discussion groups, etc. that the community would like. More ideas to be discussed at the Sept. 12 meeting. Nicky Stary agreed to liaison with parish Spiritual Development Committee. After a productive exploration about “the state of the community,” the committee felt that we may be wise to address some grief and loss issues – especially for founding members but also for others. The committee is looking into this.

Joe Pulizzi, Chair, Communications Committee

Message from Marianne Kerr, CSM Treasurer:

“The regular collections for the month of August totaled $11,350 – for an average of $2270 a week. We need to collect $3000 a week to meet budget. The CSM is still spending more money than is being collected. Our cash reserves are starting to dwindle. I will present a financial report Sunday, Sept. 21, during the 11 o’clock Liturgy. Please support your community. Thank you” – M.K.

Also from Marianne Kerr:

“The St. Patrick’s Day Dance is being resurrected. Mark your calendars for Friday, Mar. 14, 2004. If you are interested in serving on the committee please contact me at 216-932-0781 or at Marianne_Kerr@msn.com.

And yet again from Marianne: “Attention Chico shoppers! In the market for new clothes, or need to buy some gifts? We can have a private party at a Chico’s on a Sunday evening for our shopping needs. Ten percent of sales will be donated to St. Malachi’s. We need a minimum of 10 people to reserve the store. If interested in attending, please all me at 216-932-0761.” M.K.

HELP GET THE WORD OUT!

(Reprinted from the 8/24/03 issue of Communio)

Many CSM members choose to receive the CSM Newsletter and Communio electronically, saving paper and easing administration. But currently, they don’t see the several items that are often “attached” for distribution at the church doors. The Communications Committee would like to ensure that e-readers receive all the news.

Help Wanted: an ‘editor’ to receive ‘attachments’ and meld them into a ‘classified section.’ We’d then append that to each e-issue of the CSM Newsletter and Communio. The ever-helpful staff at the rectory is willing to help channel data to you as items arrive. We need you! What’s Required? – * e-mail to receive electronic files. * A fax or fax software for items that reach the rectory printed. * An hour, twice a month. * Grammar and spelling skills helpful, but not required. Contact Joe Pulizzi at (w) 216-931-9566 or (h) 216-941-5054 or joe_pulizzi@yahoo.com.

August 18, 2003

Malachi Mart’s employees and volunteers

St. Malachi Center Board of Trustees

St. Malachi Center Board of Members

The Malachi Mart Committee

Members of St. Malachi Parish

Members of the Community of St. Malachi

Dear Friends:

I want to share with you an event that reinforces the mission of St. Malachi Center: “Founded in Faith. Nurtured in Love. Continued in Hope.”  On August 1, 2003 an armed robbery occurred at Malachi Mart. Thank God no one was physically injured. Through the honorable acts of Two Urban Community School junior high students, who refused to participate in the robbery and instead called the police, the perpetrator was caught and money taken returned.

Although trouble is not new to the Angle, this is the first “armed assault” in the Mart’s thirteen-year history.  The events of the day remind us of the sanctity and fragility of God’s gift of life. We strive to cherish it and each other more vigorously.  In this spirit, I wanted to share with everyone accurate information about the day’s events and our plans to ensure the Mart remains a safe, enjoyable place to shop and rewarding place to work.

Here is a summary of the key events of the day:

  • Two junior high students had been recruited by the robber, they refused and called the police for help.

  • A Mart customer observantly provided the robber’s getaway path, contributing to the police capturing the robber immediately.
  • Neither of the two employees on duty was physically harmed.
  • Center leadership spoke immediately with affected employees, is following up with them and is providing professional and financial support to ensure they are healing from their ordeal.

We recognize that although existing procedures were followed, improvements must be made.  The following is a summary of planning steps being taken by the board to strengthen security.

·        Security and Human Resource professionals are being called upon to advise the board and staff on further improving safety and employee support policies, procedures and technology.

·        St. Malachi Center Buildings and Grounds Committee is reviewing all security issues for the Mart and St Malachi Center.

·        The Mart Committee is upgrading all written policies to strengthen guidance for employees and volunteers. And planning additional training of staff for handling emergency situations.

·        Existing policies are being evaluated to incorporate a broader emergency plan for medical emergencies, fire safety and response and crisis counseling.

·        A “crisis” communication plan is being developed to ensure timely and accurate notification and communication to interested parties.

In addition to procedural improvements, the board is taking steps to recognize the honorable acts of the two Urban Community School students who had the courage to “do the right thing.”

The day’s events affect our wider St. Malachi campus - - all who come to worship, serve, grow, learn, or be ministered to. We have started specific steps to provide the utmost in safety for all. But we need your help- -

Please pray for all the people involved in that day’s events for the grace and peace of Christ to be with them.

Please provide constructive recommendations and resources to the board and respective committees for enhanced safety or training.

And please call me directly with any comments and suggestions.

But most of all please remain confident and supportive of the Mart and the role it continues to play in the community.

Peace,

Melanie A. Wall
