As was announced last Sunday by Kathy Burke, vice president of the Community of St. Malachi Council and chair of our Task Force on Sexual Abuse: The task force has been examining legislation pending in the Ohio General Assembly which would add clergy and official church laypersons to members of those professions already required to report sexual abuse of minors, such as legal, educational, social service and health care personnel. “The Senate has already passed the legislation and it is under consideration by the House of Representatives. A supportive petition to the Ohio General Assembly and Governor Taft has been drafted and is being offered for your signature after this Liturgy today (8/17/03) and task force members will also have it available at the St. Malachi picnic this afternoon. It also will be available for signatures following our Aug. 14 and Aug. 31 Liturgies. “The petition reads as follows: ‘The undersigned members and supporters of the Community of St. Malachi, a personal parish of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, join with the Diocese of Cleveland and with the Ohio Catholic Conference in supporting and urging the prompt concurrence by the House of Representatives in SB 100 as passed by the Ohio Senate. We believe that implementation and enforcement of the provisions of SB 100 can help to protect the children of Ohio in the future from the devastating effects of sexual abuse and will close a gap in Ohio law that may have contributed to previous incidents of abuse of children. “’We further believe that any final bill needs to include the narrowly drawn recognition of the cleric-penitent privilege and exception that is contained in SB 100. Bona-fide members of the clergy need to be able to assure persons who seek their counsel in a true cleric-penitent relationship that all confidential communications in that limited situation will remain confidential. “’We call upon Governor Taft to sign such legislation upon its passage and to direct all state agencies and employees that have any jurisdiction or responsibility for the protection of children and other vulnerable persons from sexual abuse to implement and enforce the legislation and to take such other steps as may be necessary to provide for that protection.’” “One need not be a registered voter or Community of St. Malachi member to sign this petition. Any and all voices of support will be welcome. Thank you… K.B. and the CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse
Hello and Goodbye – No, the Other Way Round… First, a CSM (reluctant) Farewell to Judy Bozell, our rectory secretary for a good number of years. In early September she is (happily) off to California’s San Bernadino hills to live near a daughter and three grandchildren. (Lucky them…) Judy has been a true blessing here at St. Malachi, generously sharing her time, talents, love and spirit-lifting good nature. She will surely be missed. God be good to her… Next, a CSM welcome to her successor, Kimberly Kramer. (No, she is not a relative of Gene and JoAnn.) Like Judy, Kim is a member of St. Pat’s Parish on Bridge Avenue. She is the mother of three children and has just survived her first week here at St. Malachi. (More about her next time.) Meanwhile, we do indeed welcome her and wish her well. * * * * * * * * * * * CONGRATULATIONS to CSM newlyweds, Deborah Forkas and Ron Perger, and to not-so-newlyweds Rebecca and Ken Rocco, who have just celebrated their 40th anniversary. * * * * * * * * * * CSM CONGRATULATIONS AND THANKS to the following members of both our parishes whose organizing efforts turned last Sunday’s St. Malachi picnic into a most pleasant occasion: Co-chairs Stephanie Taylor-Ayers and Terri Junquist; Margaret Armstead, Nick Aylward, Arleen Corrigan, Karen Duffy and Cathy Saegel. Message from Cathy Saegel: ‘ST. MALACHI CENTER SUMMER UPDATE’ “The center has enjoyed another successful summer. We have extended our mission of nourishing the families and youth of Cleveland’s Near West Side in spirit, mind and body, and supporting their self-development to close to 200 individuals daily. “Our six-week Summer Enrichment Program served 82 youth, providing them with many new experiences. As part of their summer experience, youth attended Art on Wheels weekly. In their final trip, our youth participated in a drumming recital and art show along with city officials from Mayor Jane Campbell’s office. “ The center provided Interfaith Hospitality Network and the West Side Catholic Center 10 spaces in our program. This allowed youth from area shelters an opportunity to experience our Summer Enrichment Program. Fourteen teens attended the CCHD Break the Cycle event and learned about the issue of poverty. The Young Teen Alliance held their third annual café, bringing in $127.15 worth of lunchtime orders. “We also made great strides in our adult education and job readiness programs. We congratulate Amanda Gawkins, who received her GED, and are keeping Cindy, Donell and Alexis in our prayers as they await the results of their GED exams. We are especially proud of Latoya and Dysheka, who succeeded in finding full-time employment within a week of graduating the Steps-to-Success program. On Aug. 13 we had an open house for the Steps to Success program, which drew many young people. We now have some 20 young adults waiting to join the program. “The families we serve are grateful for the support they receive from St. Malachi’s. Many express that they consider St. Malachi their church. Without your support the center would not be able to continue to nurture and grow our ministry.” - C.S. * * * * * * * * * * *

Or maybe you don’t know. Just in case, here’s a reiteration of the differences between Communio and this CSM Newsletter. The newsletter is meant to be exactly that. A report of what is happening, or about to happen, in and around the Community of St. Malachi in particular. When space and time permit, also is carried similar news of interest to our members about other parishes, ministries, neighborhood groups, diocesan organizations and the like. The newsletter is published the second and fourth Sundays of every month. Communio, on the other hand, is published the fourth Sunday of each month (except July). As noted on its masthead, its function is “to strengthen our shared life in Christ through mutual participation and the free exchange of ideas.” Also noted in each issue is the fact that “All viewpoints of interest to our Community in the context of our journey of faith are welcome here. Viewpoints are those of the writers and not necessarily the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.” Deadline and other pertinent submission information is provided in all issues of both publications.
