FUN…FOOD…FRIENDS… Not just once. Twice! ANNUAL ‘ALL ST. MALACHI’ PICNIC - 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 - Lakewood Park Women’s Pavilion Food and Fun for All Ages (Potluck details will be provided in our Aug. 10 CSM Newsletter) - Information: Stephanie Taylor-Ayers, 216-939-1878 CSM 20th ANNUAL OUTDOOR LITURGY AND POTLUCK - 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, Starre’s Acres in Granger Township (Medina) Says Dave Starre: “For the potluck, bring a nutritious side dish since all meats and drinks will be provided. Come early and stroll the ‘new’ pathways through the woods. Maps will be provided at coffee hour and the rectory. Any questions, call me at 440-526-3876.” Subsequent to the above announcement, Dave Starre issued the following “alert” - “For those of you who have been to the land in Granger Township (Medina), it may be of interest that the bridge that allows us to walk to the back-land, which some of you helped me build several years ago, was washed away during the severe storm Monday, July 21.(My birthday.) The creek, if you could picture it, rose nearly six feet and devastated the paths and trails around it. That same creek flows into the Yellow Creek in Ghent, which eventually flows into the Cuyahoga River. On Tuesday, the view of what God’s nature can do was like I could hardly believe. The rest of the property, being higher, was undamaged. In several weeks everything should heal and the Sept.6th event on the land will still go on. In the meantime, I will be looking for a few volunteers to help me carry two 20-foot logs from the land to start working on a new bridge before September. Any takers?” – D.S.

THEY’RE IN THE NEWS: St. Malachi folk – both identified and non-ID’d – are hailed in Nancy Erikson’s July 18 Universe Bulletin feature story about parishes along U.S. Route 6. They include Fred Leonard, Cathy Saegel, Marianne Kerr, Mary Brown and LaToya Allen. And a large-as-life Alan Myers, carrying the cross, is pictured on the weekly Peace Walk to Public Square, accompanied by Jeanne Strok and Caroline Leonhardt. Also, front page news was made by Caitlin (Katie) Alaimo, in the July 17 Lakewood Sun Post. Her lovely three-column wide picture topped an interview headlined “Girl’s visit to Nicaragua proves a real eye-opener.” Katie plans to write up a report of the trip for us for publication next month. If you have an interest in any of these areas, or would like more information, please contact Joe Pulizzi 216-941-5054 or joe_pulizzi@yahoo.com Minutes – Special Community Council Meeting On Finance– July 21, 2003 Meeting convened at 7 p.m. in the library of Urban Community School. Attendance - CSM Council Members: Rosemary Gaffney Etheart, Bill Johansen, Bill Schubmehl, Marianne Kerr, Gene Kramer, Karen Duffy, Joe Wegrzynowski, Stephanie Taylor Ayers, Nick Aylward, Cynthia Bender, Fr. Tony, Luis Gutierrez. Community Members: Jerry Sheehan, Jo Ann Kramer, Bill McLaughlin, Gary Pritts. 7:15 - Luis called the meeting to order. Bill Johansen read John 6:1-15. Personal reflections were shared. Luis called on Marianne to begin the discussion. Began with a discussion of income and expenses for the fiscal years '97-'98 to '02-'03. Marianne reported that the Finance Council proposes cuts in Parish and diocesan support. We discussed the amount that had been received on pledge cards and how it compared to past years - each of those years the amount received was higher than the pledged amount. Gary Pritts shared his opinion that we should suspend payments to the diocese and continue payments, as budgeted to the Parish. Gene pointed out that our status as a parish makes it incumbent that we make diocesan payments. Marianne reviewed several options for cuts. Gene expressed the opinion that the Community has become moribund. Jo Ann followed with expressed concern about dead committees. Bill Johansen talked about Vibrant Parish Life (VPL) and how it identified as a need enhanced adult faith formation and the importance of following through on VPL findings. Bill J. proposed a more aggressive approach to budgeting: up the budget 20% and take it to the Community. Karen cautioned about budgeting money we don't have. Bill described Lou Keim's idea to do small group home study programs. Pat burns offered as a sign of hope the fact that there are already 11 on the fundraising committee. Bill Schubmehl observed two things being said at the table:
Bill S. noted that what worked 30 years ago was the vision to serve. Gene talked about the Sunday liturgy being the core the Community's faith life. He said it was disturbing that there aren't more people serving on the liturgy committee. Joe spoke about cuts to commitments we've made as a negative approach; felt we needed to sell need for more money to prevent cuts. Pat proposed that Marianne make a presentation on the challenges facing the Community and put a new set of pledge cards in the pews with a line for initial commitment and a line for re-commitment. If the pledges don't address the deficit the Community is facing then the Council will have to make some tough decisions. Bill J. and Joe W seconded proposal. Jo Ann talked about the need to be clear about what we are asking funds for and expressed the opinion that we are living rich. Bill J. said we should appeal to people to ante up for essential services. Marianne raised concern about asking people to give more money. Stephanie and Pat both talked about the need to present everyone with a choice. Bill J. asked about whether there is a history of this kind of appeal in the Community and Jo Ann and Gene said that the Council has always gone to the members for special projects. Jo Ann asked if our budget does not reflect our mission why do we want to fight for this budget. Rosemary talked to the need to maintain staff salaries. Jo Ann spoke about this being a new time and that we are not as well off as the Parish. Luis asked about the cost to maintain the ministry of "St. Malachi Church." Luis called the meeting back to the proposal. Motion to reduce Parish support from 29% to 19% and diocesan support from 11.5% to 6%. Second by Bill S. Motion to amend proposal so that cuts are made only after 3 weeks of appeals for re-commitment from the pulpit with an additional week to give people time to turn in pledge cards. Second by Joe W. Discussion: Bill S. suggested that we pass the cuts and then do the recommitment. Jerry said he didn't think higher commitments were the whole answer. Jerry said he didn't understand rationale of Parish commitments as a percentage of collections; we run the risk of failing and being set back further. Vote on amendment: 5 yea, 4 nay. Amendment failed because as stipulated in our charter a simple majority of the entire Council is needed to decide a question. As there weren't enough votes to pass proposal, Gene moved to adjourn and Bill S. seconded. Vote to adjourn: 1 yea, 8 nay. Conversation continued about how to reconcile the 2 perspectives at the table. Marianne talked about the church as a business. Jo Ann talked about the need to act on the budget now and then review our financial relationship with the Parish, staffing, etc. Bill J. talked about the concern about the history of the Community and the Parish. Motion by Pat to commit to three things:
Discussion followed. Amendment passed. Vote on proposal from Finance Council: 7 yea, 2 nay. Motion tabled. Motion to adjourn. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 9:37 p.m. Lord's Prayer and Sign of Peace. Next Meeting: 7 p.m. at St. Malachi Center on August 5, 2003. Potluck at 6:15. Respectfully submitted, Pat Burns, At-Large CSM Council Member APPROVED by Council to-be-scheduled. copy: Archives, CSM Office. * * * * * * * * * * | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
