“UGH…a FUNDRAISING GROUP… “The Community of St. Malachi is not a bare bones kind of place. We have a bold vision, a beautiful liturgy, and are engaged in a rich variety of ministries. Unfortunately we have a bare bones budget that is starting to strangle our ability to be bold, beautiful and rich. The CSM Council has initiated a Fundraising Task Force to creatively address these discrepancies. We are hoping to plan a variety of activities and efforts to involve singing, dancing, eating, new clothes, and more than a little prayer for wisdom. If you would like to be part of this task force, please contact me at 216-221-6726 or patrickburns1@juno.com ” - PB (Ed. We are so grateful for all your prayers and words of encouragement. Our identical twin girls were born Wednesday, July 2, at McDonald House by c-section. Paula and babies are doing well. Ainsley Elizabeth was born first but Teagan Margaret is determined never again to be second at anything! They both have wonderful saints looking over them, including the special great-aunts (Elizabeth and Margaret) who bestowed so much love on their grandparents, Cindy and Tony DiNardo. Big brother Ian doesn’t know yet what a mixed blessing twin sisters will be but he does know “Sisters” and “babies” and was more impressed with their celebratory balloon than with them on his first visit. The babies and their mother remain at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital for the time being. Love from Cindy, Paula, Brian, Ian and the Twins.” CSM CONGRATULATIONS TO the following Magnificat High School students who have earned second semester first honors: Megeen Tube, junior, and Libby Derethik and Maura Garven, sophomores. MINUTES – CSM COUNCIL MEETING – JUNE 29, 2003 Meeting convened at 5:30 p.m. at the Burke residence. Attendance: Nick Aylward, Cynthia Bender, Kathy Burke, Pat Burns, Rosemary Etheart, Luis Gutierrez, Bill Johansen, Marianne Kerr, Gene Kramer, Joe Pulizzi, Bill Schubmehl, Fr. Tony Schuerger, Joe Wegrzynowski VPL Prayer The evening’s agenda was approved unanimously; minutes of the previous meeting were approved unanimously. The CSM Charter and Handbook were distributed to incoming council members. The schedule of council meetings was approved. Discussion Items Open Forums Short discussion was held regarding the possibility of holding two open forums next year outside of the annual meeting. There has been positive feedback from the CSM regarding the idea. Specific dates will be discussed at the next full council meeting.
The CSM Fundraising Task Force held their first meeting June 18, 2003, led by Pat Burns. He presented a list of ideas for possible fundraising activities, including the possibility of establishing an endowment fund in Fr. Hritz’s honor, the selling of merchandise, a stewardship campaign and dance/raffle. The task force will continue to develop these ideas in hope of generating additional revenue due to the collections and membership shortfall. Vibrant Parish Life summary. There will be a gathering Saturday, July 12, from 9a.m.-4 p.m. to discuss some of the findings of the VPL survey and how to collaborate within the CSM. All of council is urged to attend. There was a concern from some council members as to the findings of the VPL study. To date, the diocese has not been able to calculate CSM’s final returns, or to separate the findings from the parish. There was a motion to not use the data until all the data is calculated, and that data is separate from the parish. Motion passed. CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse – next meeting Thursday, July 24. The approved statement on sexual abuse needs to be added to the handbook. Pat Burns spoke of a Boston College study regarding the National Sex Abuse Scandal. Kathy Burke to check into. Add to agenda for next meeting matter of adding statement to handbook. Finance Council Report – Gary Pritts and Jerry Sheehan added to Finance Committee, replacing JoAnn Kramer and Bill McLaughlin. Thanks to both for their years of service. There was much discussion regarding the CSM financial situation. Marianne Kerr reported on the Finance Committee’s meeting with St. Malachi Parish to discuss lowering CSM’s share of payment to both the parish and the diocese as two possible solutions. It was noted that all of CSM’s current collections are going to the parish and the diocese, with no money left to fund the ministries. The major issue is that collections are down, thus we need to increase revenues or lower expenses, or both. It does not seem that members are giving less, but that we are losing members. It was decided that a special Finance Committee meeting needed to be set up to discuss this matter in more detail. July 22 at 7 p.m. was set. As of the typing of these minutes, there was a possibility of a date change for this meeting. Closing Items: The next full CSM Council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25 in St. Malachi Center. Committee reports to be e-mailed to Luis Gutierrez by July 29. Luis urged committee heads to get these complete. Agenda for the meeting will be e-mailed by Aug. 2. Respectfully submitted, Joe Pulizzi, Communications Committee APPROVED by Council to-be-scheduled (Minutes30629) copy: Archives, CSM Office Report from CSM TASK FORCE ON SEXUAL ABUSE The following letter, dated June 20, 2003, was sent to Bishop Anthony M. Pilla, signed by Luis Gutierrez, CSM Council president and Kathleen Burke, task force chair: “Dear Bishop Pilla: In the statement adopted by the members of the Community of St. Malachi on March 2, 2003, we called on the Diocese of Cleveland to support state legislation that would expand mandatory child-abuse reporting requirements to include members of the clergy among those who are required to report suspected child abuse, while respecting the privacy of the priest-penitent relationship. Bills on this subject have now been introduced in each house of the Ohio General Assembly. “S.B. No. 100, introduced by, among others, Senator Robert Spada of Cuyahoga County, would require such reporting while recognizing a ‘cleric-penitent’ exception. H. R. No. 207, introduced by, among others, Representative Lance Mason, also of Cuyahoga County, does not include such an exception. “We of the Community of St. Malachi believe that laws requiring all diocesan personnel, including ordained clergy (but subject to an exception of the priest-penitent relationship), to report instances of child abuse are consistent with the stated policy and determination of the diocese to protect children from sexual and other forms of abuse. It appears that S.B. No. 100 is consistent with the kind of legislation that we endorsed in our March 2 statement. “As we consider action to endorse, and to encourage our members to endorse and support, that or similar legislation, we would like to know what position the Diocese of Cleveland has taken, or proposes to take, with respect to that legislation. Since S.B. No. 100 has already been the subject of a committee hearing, we assume that you and other Ohio bishops will want to make your position known in the near future. “We would welcome the opportunity to work with diocesan officials in formulating our respective positions on the proposed legislation. Sincerely…” The following response, dated June 24, 2003, was received from Bishop Pilla: “Dear Ms. Burke and Mr. Gutierrez: The Diocese of Cleveland and the Catholic Conference of Ohio support S.B. 100 sponsored by Senator Robert Spada and others. An explanation of the bill will be prepared by the Catholic Conference of Ohio staff for distribution to diocesan newspapers. We have been informed that serious discussion of this proposed bill will not take place until the fall. With every best wish, I am…sincerely yours in Christ…” Marty Miller, member of the CSM Task Force on Sexual Abuse, received the following e-mail, dated June 25, 2003, from Sen. Robert Spada “SB 100 passed the Ohio senate with a vote of 32-1 yesterday. It will be forwarded to the Ohio House of Representatives for their consideration…Bob Spada” * * * * * * * * * * * “Planet Green” – please continue to save empty printer cartridges for the environmental project.
