This includes viewpoints that some might interpret as being at odds with the formal teaching of the Roman Catholic Church. While seeking to promote broad dialogue, information contributed by CSM members is preferred. Contributors shall heed the dictates of Christian justice and charity, avoid personal attacks, and respect the viewpoints of others.” “The above is the editorial policy of CSM publications as is found in the Community of St. Malachi Handbook. For the March 23 issue of Communio, an article was submitted by Fred Leonard entitled “No Naming Rights.” The article was looked at by both the Editor-in-Chief and myself, and published. The article contained criticism of Malachi House, St. Malachi Center and Monday Night Meal. It closed with a line suggesting that these ministries be renamed “Anderson House,” “Enron Center” and “Ravens Monday Nite Meal.” “Later in the week I received a phone call from the director of one of these ministries. The caller expressed outrage that we at Communio would publish such an article. Later that day I called the gentleman responsible for maintaining our website and asked that Fred’s article be removed, which it was. “The call marked a turning point for me as it forced me to address my growing discomfort with some of the material that has been published in Communio, especially over the last eight months or so. While I am a strong believer in the importance of Communio as a forum for the discussion of issues that concern our community, I also feel strongly that our editorial policy should be honored and, in this case, I believe I did not properly exercise my responsibility as editor. “While I recognize the right of someone to offer criticism, I also believe that in the context of a publication dedicated to ‘strengthening our shared life in Christ through mutual participation and the free exchange of ideas,’ in the context of a community where we are brothers and sisters in Christ, we need to temper our criticism with Christian charity and work to be constructive in addressing the challenges facing us. “That being said, I would like to apologize to all the people who work and volunteer at Malachi House, St. Malachi Center and with the Monday Night Meal. I ask all of these people to forgive me and I ask that they keep me in their prayers.” Luis Gutierrez, Editor of Communio Words of Inspiration from Barbara Starre: “Dear members of St. Malachi’s Community: Being a caregiver is a difficult and often unwelcome situation for many people. I am one of those people. When my life partner David was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, my initial reaction was fear and anger. I thought I had retired from caregiving. Our children were grown and I had not worked as a nurse for seven years. This was the best time of my life. I was free to take art classes and engage in other activities that I considered fun - like building snowmen with our grandchildren. “The first thing I did was reject the role of caregiver. I could never be in that situation again. Consciously, I decided to think of myself as Dave’s best friend. Best friends can be open and honest with each other. I felt free to express my fears, my anger, my pain, and my deep love for my best friend. “Recently I asked Dave if he feels afraid. He said, ‘No. I have all those people praying for me, all those people who care about me.’ He also said he understood my fear and responded, ‘If I die, I’ll be gone and you will be the one who is alone.’ “I still feel afraid, angry, and depressed sometimes but best friends can share all that quite freely. I have also become aware how serious illness can be a catalyst that can transform fear and anger into joy and a deep sense of wonder at the mystery of life. Each moment of life is a precious gift for which both Dave and I are grateful. Each evening we join hands and offer a prayer of gratitude for all our blessings. Dave always asks God to bless all those who are praying for him. “Thank you all for your prayers, love, and care. Words cannot express the depth of our combined gratitude. I ask for your continued prayers. Dave still has bone marrow cancer and I still feel afraid. When I take time to play and build snowmen with the grandchildren I forget my fear for a while because play is part of the wonder, joy, and mystery of life. “Love and Prayers and Gratitude to all of you.” - Barbara Starre * * * * * * * * * * *
