From JoAnn Kramer:

Minutes of Special Meeting of the Community of St. Malachi - March 2, 2003

At a special meeting of the Community of St. Malachi called for the purpose, the community considered the adoption of a statement prepared by its Task Force on Sexual Abuse. The meeting was opened with a prayer offered by Marty Miller. The president of the CSM Council, Luis Gutierrez, noted that notice of the meeting and a copy of the proposed statement had been mailed to each household of members of the community.

Kathy Burke, chairperson of the community’s Task Force on Sexual Abuse in the Church, introduced the members of the task force and described the process by which the statement was developed and then submitted to the CSM Council at its meeting Feb. 2. The statement was adopted by the community council at that meeting and referred to the CSM membership for action at this meeting.

Joe Mohar moved the endorsement of the statement. The motion was seconded. Discussion followed. Members of the task force responded to questions and comments. Upon motion by Joe Mohar, seconded and approved by the members in attendance, the statement was amended to insert the words “including bishops” in paragraph 3 on page 2, to read as follows:

“Because the diocese under its previously adopted policies did not do enough to prevent abuse and did not adequately and appropriately deal with allegations of abuse, we are seriously concerned about the effectiveness of newly adopted policies. At a minimum, diocesan authorities, including bishops, clergy, officials, agents and employees who were responsible for administering those prior policies in a manner that caused pain and suffering to victims and their families need to acknowledge and apologize for their actions and should be removed from responsibility for carrying out newly adopted policies.”

The motion to endorse the statement as amended was approved by voice vote.

Kathy Burke reported that the work of the task force will continue, and comments and questions raised at this special meeting will be taken into consideration in its future deliberations. It was announced that the community’s statement, as approved at this meeting, will be published on the web site and mailed to, among others, the bishops of the Cleveland Diocese, the Priests’ Senate, religious congregations, other parishes in the Cleveland Central West District, and the news media.

Fran DeChant reported on the first meeting of the “Accountability Group” of parishes convened in cooperation with Sr. Chris Schenk and FutureChurch to consider a broader response of the laity in the Cleveland Diocese. Fran DeChant, Marty Miller and Gene Kramer represented the Community of St. Malachi at the first meeting, will attend the next scheduled meeting and report to the community on the group’s activities.

The meeting concluded with a prayer offered by Fran DeChant.

Respectfully submitted, JoAnn Kramer
