During its Sept. 8 meeting, the CSM Council voted to endorse…

VIBRANT PARISH LIFE SURVEY

A Message from Luis Gutierrez:

Luis Gutierrez:

The St. Malachi Vibrant Parish Life Coordinating Committee (VPLCC) has decided that to augment the information gathered as part of the ‘Rejoice and Renew: St. Malachi Looks to the Future" self-study, members of the Community of St. Malachi and St. Malachi Parish will be asked to fill out a survey at Masses the weekend of the Feast of St. Malachi, Nov. 2-3. We want to hear from as many people as possible about what they like about what we’re doing here and about what we can do better, and we think this is the best way to accomplish that. Details on how we’re going to do this are being worked out by an ad hoc committee, so you’ll be hearing more about this in the very near future.

"I’ve been asked to recruit volunteers to help process all this information so, if you’re hooked up to the internet and would like to input a batch of surveys at the Vibrant Parish Life website, please call me at 216-226-7726 or 3-mail me at redcuban@yahoo.com

"Young people, I’d like to point out that this is an excellent opportunity for you to perform an important service for your parish. All volunteers are welcome". – L.G.

(Also from Luis, here is this week’s excerpt from Bishop Pilla’s pastoral letter: "A vibrant parish reaches out to the world around it and genuinely cares about the needs of the poor and those who are less fortunate. A vibrant parish must inspire in its parishioners a care for its members and its neighbors. We know that the ‘neighbors’ of any parish include the surrounding community with its many different people, the diocese, the nation, our universal Church and the whole of the society in which we live. We must be a sharing community to bear the name Catholic. ‘The Church in the City’ initiative has further defines this call to serve the common good of our cities and the region. It is also clear to us that as Church, and especially as individual members and local communities in the Church, we must be involved in forming a just society." - Bishop Anthony M. Pilla

LITURGY OF LAMENT FOR THE BROKEN BODY OF CHRIST

7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 14

Church of the Ascension – 13030 Puritas Ave., Cleveland

Hosted by Ascension Parish – Catalyzed by FutureChurch

Co-participants include Community of St. Malachi and 20 other parishes and religious communities.

For survivors of sexual abuse by clergy or others in church ministry or employment, and for their families, friends and all who love the broken Body of Christ. Welcome are all who wish to support survivors, lament our brokenness, and pray for healing in our church.

The ritual is being developed by Fr. Joe Fortuna, Ascension pastor, and Laurel Jurecki, pastoral minister.

Says Sr. Chris Schen, CSJ: since there is no way of knowing who will come to the service, we have set
some ground rules:
1) We will not name individual survivors, alleged abusers, or convicted abusers.
2) We do not intend to address the status of the legal and policy-making processes in this diocese or anywhere else.
3) We do Intend to provide a time to pray and to be in solidarity with the pain of victims/survivors and pain of our wounded church.
4) We will have competent counselors, therapists and spiritual directors/companions (with name and credentials identified in the program) for those who wish to pursue therapeutic and spiritual counseling or both. Information: 216-228-0869.

WE’VE GOT MESSAGES

From Bonnie Mar:

"New update. The hearing regarding my unemployment compensation was held on Monday, Sept. 30. Officially, on paper, I will collect unemployment! I hadn’t realized how much this had been bothering me…" B.M.

Passed along by Cathy Saegel:

u for sponsoring the recent blood drive. Because of your efforts, 17 donors presented and we were able to collect 14 pints of blood. Considering one pint can be made into three different life-saving components, your blood drive has the potential to help 42 patients. The American Red Cross, your community and the patients who received the life-saving benefits from this effort thank you. You were a tremendous help in recruiting and promoting this drive. Your continued support and commitment to the blood program provides healthy, concerned individuals the opportunity to donate a life-saving medicine. Sincerely, Doug Mekinda, donor representative." And Cathy postscripts: We will be holding another drive in the spring."

From Linda Bellini:

"I want to thank everyone who has been keeping my dad and our family in your thoughts and prayers. The latest news is great! My dad, who was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year, had part of his right lung removed in May, followed by radiation treatments which ended Aug. 23. He then had a chest x-ray and CAT scan and recently received the results; both tests were clear, with no signs of cancer anywhere! He is almost back to normal, feeling far less tired and doing a lot of his previous activities. His spirit has remained positive and his faith strong throughout this ordeal, and he never lost his sense of humor. …. Thanks again for all your prayers and support. It is such a good feeling to be able to share this good outcome with all of you." - L.B

CSM SYMPATHY AND PRAYERS
for the family and friends of Horst Quintus (whose funeral arrangements at this newsletter’s "press time" were as yet incomplete.) The struggle with tears displayed by Ilse Strnisha as she read from Scripture during our Liturgy last Sunday was illustrative of the sense of loss shared by so many CSM members. Most were under shock at that time by the news just received of his unexpected death in Germany. His ever-presence – ever low key, ever loving, ever dependable, ever obliging – will be sorely missed. Good to remember, though, that our loss is our dear Horst’s gain…

CSM HEALTH DEPARTMENT
 – please keep in your prayers Judie Flynn, Dave Starre, Dennis Stramel, Walter Culkowski, Bea Donofrio, Florence Dick, Lucy Balser, Ray Centa, Mark Perger, Marilyn Bohn, James Piar, Mark Tejchman, Mary Uschlbec, Matthew Forkas, Charles Russo, Maureen Miller, Bernadette Bluett, Maureen Cooney Flanagan, Mary Beth Gibbons, Nancy Eliason, Sheri Glassman, Megan Reilly Torres, William Reiser, Jim Harrison, Jan and Gerard VanLier, Anthony Ayers, C.J. Finohr.

CSM CONGRATULATIONS, with thanks, to Cynthia Bender, who was elected to chair the CSM Membership Committee at the September meeting of the CSM Council, and to Mariann Kerr, who was approved to replace Ed Shemo, whose term expired June 30, on the Finance Council. Our thanks to Ed, too.

And let’s hear it for Ron Perger, who has been elected president of the Cleveland State University Alumni Association; and for Mike Pellegrino, CSM council president, who has been named interim principal for this school year at Lakewood’s Horace Mann Middle School. Cheers, too, for Rachel Schiros, daughter of Ginny and Frank Schiros, who was one of five National Merit semi-finalists announced last month at Lakewood High School (Her mother reports that her scores placed her in the top one percent of the 1.3 million juniors who took the P-SAT last year and now she’ll go on to be considered as a National Merit Scholar.)
