F U T U R E C H U R C H 12th Annual Benefit Dinner beginning with silent auction and social 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 – Rockside Holiday Inn, Independence Speaker: DR. EUGENE KENNEDY psychologist, author, Loyola University professor emeritus and New York Times columnist His topic: "The Unhealed Wound: The Church and Human Sexuality" Tickets: sponsor $125; patron $75; friend $50; fixed income/student $35 Reservations, by Oct. 2: call 216-228-0869 or e-mail: info@futurechurch.org * * * * * * * * * * * From Dave Starre: "The 19th annual outdoor Liturgy at Starre’s Acres a week ago Saturday brought out nearly 250 Malachites, friends and relatives. Fr. Jim O’Donnell was close to being Jesus on earth as he delivered a homily that created a ‘spiritual silence in the woods’ like many of us have never witnessed before. The calmness and serenity continued on as he also ‘healed’ those in need. You had to be there ‘in the moment’ to appreciate the evening. Also, the most ‘nutritious’ side dishes were served afterward. And a special thanks to those who helped set up the area and those who made sure it was left in spic-n-span shape afterward. Barb and I thank each of you and our prayers are with you every evening. Just (sic), Dave" From Bonnie Mar: "Here’s an update on my unemployment claim. I filed for unemployment benefits at the end of May. According to a representative of the Diocesan Unemployment Benefits Office, St. Malachi Center ‘incorrectly reported’ necessary information, so that there is no record of my employment during the entire year 2001. My claim was disallowed. I appealed, but the original determination was upheld. I appealed again, and now a hearing is being scheduled, date not yet determined. Several people have advised me about how to proceed, and an attorney is checking out the situation." – B.M. From Mary Piar: "This is with reference to Dan Alaimo’s comment in the Aug. 25 Communio: ‘I have always seen Coffee Hour as an extension of the liturgy – not just a place to pick up coffee and doughnuts. And one more thing – bring back the bagels!’ - "First, I want to give a big thanks to all the volunteers who make the coffee hour possible. John Delzani and Kathy Dugan, Joan and Jim Majewski, Terry and Sally Hayes, Bill Hubbel, Kathy and Doug Carpenter, Rosemary Etheart, Diane Castro, Terry and Pat Geiger, Louis Finucane, Mary Carol and John Lucic, and Helen Kane. Without their help, there would be no coffee hour. These volunteers each pick up the doughnuts for one month of the year and deliver them to the hall for all of us to enjoy. "We also cannot forget the volunteers who pick up all the other ingredients, set it all up before Mass, serve coffee and clean up. First week: Dave, Johnni and Lisa Flaherty; second week: Marguerite O’Donnell and Patty Cazuer; third week: Mary Piar and/or Charles and Kathleen Russo; fourth week: Terry and Sally Hayes; fifth week (if any), Carolyn Hart and Clare Vavpot. "Coffee Hour is just that – Coffee/Tea/Juice/Doughnuts. This is not a Sunday brunch with variety bagels w/cream cheese, muffins, jam and fresh fruit; that is for special occasions. And lastly, thanks to the people who make monetary donations to help with the cost; without these, Coffee Hour would not be possible. Please call me if you would like to help when needed (440-845-9864). Thanks and God Bless." – M.P., Hospitality Chair
CSM SYMPATHY AND PRAYERS CSM HEALTH DEPARTMENT * * * * * * * * * * * CSM THANKS to Fr. Tony, Charlene McElwee and the many others – you know who you are – who arranged the "Service of Peace, Healing and Hope" held Sept. 10 here at St. Malachi for the 19 parishes of the Central West District. The very moving commemoration of the 9/11 tragedy illustrated the diversity with which our district is blessed. Music and prayers reflected English, German, Slovak and Spanish language heritages, while participation of blind, deaf and otherwise disabled persons added much inspiration. And special thanks to Sr. Corita Ambro and her crew from St. Augustine’s for capping the evening with a great layout of refreshments. * * * * * * * * * * And WE’VE GOT STILL MORE MESSAGES …From Fr. Tony Schuerger: "We have learned recently that the steps to the old church and retaining wall have deteriorated. The pressure of the hill has been pushing the wall toward Washington Avenue. It is now tilting a foot or more from vertical and leading dangerously toward the street. At the top of the steps, there is a gap of several inches between the wall and the platform. We are seeking expert advice, recommendations and costs. The most likely course of action seems to be to remove the steps, build a lower retaining wall like the one in front of the rectory (using the existing stone of the wall) and landscaping the hill (similar to what is done in front of the rectory). This project should not affect the shrine area. This obviously will be a major, unanticipated expense." - Fr. AJS From Luis Gutierrez: "The Vibrant Parish Life Coordinating Committee, which met most recently on Sept. 17, continues to work on getting the word out about Vibrant Parish Life. As this group, composed of people from the parish, the community and the St. Malachi staff, turns toward examining the fruits of the Rejoice and Renew: St. Malachi Looks to the Future – with an eye on doing additional self-study to ascertain where we are and where we want to go – it wants to bring on board as many people as possible. The more St. Malachi congregants know about the process VPL entails, the more likely we are to be successful in reaching its aims. For additional VPL information, be sure to check out the links on our home pages at www.stmalachi.org "Here is an excerpt from Bishop Pilla’s pastoral letter which details his vision for Vibrant Parish Life:
From Franciscan Mission Service, Washington, D.C.: "Once again, our heartfelt thanks for your generous donation of $500 in support of Beth and Alan Mancuso and little Rachael. We are most grateful…:"
From Renee Copfer: Her nephew, David Schwark, a 16-year-old Padua Franciscan athlete, had a diving accident June 10 which has left him quadriplegic. Says Renee: "Mainstream medicine does not hold out much hope for David in the near future. Alternative therapies are worth trying, but unproven and will not be funded by insurance companies. Modifications to the Schwark home and their life are proving expensive. Will you please help us give them a hand?" (His father has recently been laid off after 26 years at LTV Steel.) A benefit sports rally with competitions, cheerleading exhibitions, marching band program, sports celebrity appearances, and refreshments will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 22, at Byers Field, behind the Parmatown Mall. Minimum suggested gift $10 per person. Any larger amount welcome. Donations can be sent to David Schwark Family Trust Fund, c/o Trustee John Kedzior, Esq., 6055 Rockside Woods Blvd. #200, Cleveland, OH 44131.
