EL SALVADOR LENTEN OUTREACH PROJECT
During last Sunday’s 11 o’clock Liturgy, CSM Council President Gary Pritts described this new combined project of St. Malachi’s two parishes. Paul Kunkel has been in communication with Fr. John King, of the Cleveland diocesan mission in El Salvador, who writes us from
Teotepeque:
"Dear Paul: I received both your e-mails regarding the resolutions of St. Malachi Community and Parish councils. I want you to know how grateful I am for considering us, and for your awareness of and desire to help the poor. The shoe project is very important. Many families do not send their kids to school because they cannot afford to buy them shoes. This project will do far more than ‘provide a fish for a day.’ It is an important step towards keeping kids in school and helping them to have the education they need to break the cycle of poverty.
"I will be sure to keep you informed on the progress of this project as it develops, with pictures and information on those who receive your donations. On behalf of the poor of our parish who will benefit from your spirit of service, ‘Muchas Gracias, y que Dios les
bendiga!’" - Fr. J.K.
Now, this message from Gary Pritts:
IDEAS FOR REDUCING CONSUMPTION FOR THE PROJECT’S BENEFIT
"The organizing committee compiled some ideas of ways to reduce consumption. Here are a few:
- Eat out one less time per day/week/month
- Reduce appetizers, drinks and desserts when eating out
- Get your pizza without toppings
- Avoid the next ‘impulse buy’ while shopping. This could save $1, or $10, or more than $100!
- Cancel your newspaper subscription during Lent; contribute the savings; devote the time savings to prayer
- Abstain from candy, snack foods and carbonated beverages
- Wear long underwear and a sweater, and turn down the heat. Turn it way down at night
- Make your own greeting cards
- Borrow your next video or book from the library instead of renting or buying it
"When you save money with one of these ideas, or any idea of your own, remember to contribute it in the special envelopes – for the El Salvador Lenten Outreach Project – available at the doors of the church. Challenge yourself to find $0.50/person/day in savings. And please make checks out to:
St. Malachi Benefit Fund"

OUTREACH AND SOCIAL ACTION PLANNING
As was announced in the last issue of Communio, the
Rejoice and Renew Reaching Out Subcommittee
has reorganized itself into the joint, two-parish group, Outreach and Social Planning (OSAP), with
many of the same members: Marge Gibbons, Kay Vine, Eric Johnson, Cathy Saegel, Rebecca Rocco, Linda Kennard, Fred Leonard, Bill McLaughlin and Pam
Pulizzi.
Main current project is a
NEIGHBORHOOD EDUCATIONAL FORUM
1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 27 – in St. Malachi Hall
Co-sponsors are Shared Ministry churches and churches of the diocese’s Cleveland Central West District. Panelists will include Cleveland City Council member Joe Cimperman, and moderator will be Bishop Roger Gries. According to OSAP member Rebecca Rocco, an important part of the forum will be questions and comments from area residents and church members. Goal is to learn of plans for the Near West Side with regard to housing, transportation/roadways and access to shopping, recreation, parks and public amenities. This is a beginning step, Rebecca says, for churches and ministries to participate in the neighborhood’s development process. All St. Malachi members are urged to attend the forum. For further information call her (440-838-8767) or Kay Vine (216-521-5836).
