The Community of St. Malachi First Personal Parish of the Diocese of Cleveland
A Message from PAT DAW(It's lengthy, perhaps, but important and informative...) ABOUT OUR CLOTHING MINISTRY For a five-week period recently we did not accept clothing donations in the church basement. We were filled and needed to clean out! During those five weeks more than 50 filled black garbage bags were put into the dumpster! It is amazing what people send down to "clothe the poor." We received shoes with holes and single shoes without a match, socks with holes and single socks without their matches, ripped shirts and paint-stained shirts, pants with broken zippers and pants with holes, stained underwear and ripped underwear...the list could go on and on. As the weather changes, I would like to tell you what we need here at St. Malachi. For men, we need clean underwear, warm socks (preferably white), shoes size 10 and larger (preferably tennis or work shoes - no dress shoes), flannel shirts, sweaters, long sleeve shirts and tee-shirts (preferably large and extra-large), pants all sizes (preferably jeans, khakis and corduroy), jackets, hats, scarfs and gloves. (If anyone knows of a place that will take men's suits and dress shoes, please let me know. 216-226-9564. The men we serve here at St. Malachi do not wear either.) For women and children, we need warm pants, shirts, sweaters, clean underwear, pajamas, jackets, hats, scarfs and gloves, single-bed sheets and blankets. Many, many thanks to Al and Dolores Sullin; Mary Carol, Megan and Noreen Lucic; Nancy Lukens; Mary Breiner; the entire Garven Family; Drew McAuliffe, and Ed and Marie Murray for all their help and good humor! Thanks, too, to all the folks in the rectory who patiently listen to all my moaning and groaning! During those five weeks - besides with the dumpster - we shared our donations with the The Cosgrove Center, St. Herman's, St. Malachi Center, Malachi House, Templum, the City Mission and a couple of other men's and women's shelters. Our donations are shared through the rectory Backdoor Ministry, the Monday Night Meal, St. Malachi Center's Shower Program and the Backdoor Ministry's monthly Sunday Brunch. At this time we are not sending things to the West Side Catholic Center because they, too, get many donations daily. Please remember. If you have a clothing donation, and it is something you would not wear yourself, please throw it in your own garbage! God bless! -- Pat Daw a.k.a. "Batty in the Basement" (And an especially big CSM THANKS to "Batty Pat" for all her hard work as successor in this ministry to her late, dearly loved father. Andy surely must be proud!)* * * * * * * * * * * AND LET'S HEAR IT, TOO, FOR... Joe Wegrznowski, who has graciously answered the call of Jeanette Shemo, our Liturgy Committee chair, to serve as CSM Eucharistic Minister scheduler. (216-252-1699). He succeeds Ron McComas, to whom we are all so much indebted for his long service in this ministry. CSM thanks to all three of you! And while we're at it, Paul Kunkel has once again designed a new masthead for this newsletter. It replaces our Silver Anniversary one. With this, its first use, we say to Paul: "CSM Danke Schoen!"
AND STILL MORE MESSAGES... A couple from Dave Starre: "My family and I thank all the wonderful, supportive people from St. Malachi's Community for the Masses, cards, phone calls and e-mails regarding the passing of our Mom, Bernadette Starre. Your presence at the wake and funeral was phenomenal. And it gave us the strength to get through her unexpected departure." - D. S. and Family "The 18th annual St. Malachi Outdoor Liturgy and Potluck at Starre's Acres was well attended with 130 Malachi people and friends. I thank Fr. Paul Hritz for being our celebrant, Charlene and the choir, and all the people for 'just being there' for a wonderful evening of friendship, love and community. See you at the 19th annual event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002 - always the first Saturday following Labor Day. Thanks." D. S. And good news from John Rolfes: * * * * * * * * * * *
