EASTERN RELIGIONS LECTURE SERIES

The CSM Spiritual Development Committee will sponsor a six-week series on the spiritualities of major Eastern religious traditions – Hindu, Buddhist, Taoist and Sufi (the mystical branch of Islam).

7 to 9 p.m. Sundays,
Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25 and Mar. 4 and 18 (no 3/11 session),
School Library

Series facilitator: CSM-member Michael Petit, Cuyahoga Community College teacher with degrees in theology, philosophy and library science, and 16 years experience as a parish priest.

Session I - An intro to religions, a discussion of reasons for study of other traditions, and the Catholic Church’s position on interreligious dialog.
Session II -
A look at the Hindu tradition: how to understand the millions of gods and concepts like karma and reincarnation; a look at yoga practices and the great scripture, the Bhagavad Gita.
Sessions III and IV –
The Buddhist tradition: a look at the life of the Buddha, the Four Noble Truths, nirvana, and the question of religion without a god. The practice of meditation will be the focus as well as some Tibetan practices.
Session V –
Taoist philosophy: the Tao, the concept of yin and yang, the Tao Te Ching and discussion of contemporary expression in eco-feminist writers, especially Sallie McFague, whose book "Super, Natural Christians," explains how she believes Christians should regard nature.
Session VI –
Islam, with a discussion of the usual misunderstandings and a look at the Sufi tradition, especially the Whirling Dervish traditions of the poet Rumi.

In short, says Mike Petit, we look at these predominantly Asian traditions so we can enrich ourselves. Participants will receive printed materials and graphics designed to encourage extended personal study. Admission is free. Information: 440-884-9309.

TONY N’ TINA’S WEDDING

Message from Bill Herceg and Bill McLaughlin:

"We are organizing a fine reception group for Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding at

5 p.m. Sunday, Apr. 22 (Sunday after Easter).

"The performance has been extended at the Hanna Theatre, so we grabbed a few tables. It lasts two and a half hours. The first half hour is the wedding ceremony in the Chapel of Love, then follows a reception that includes a meal, dancing, and all the laughs your funny bone can handle. You can dress as casually or formally as you want, but you don’t want to miss this event!

Tickets are $35 and can be ordered from Bill Hercez (440-777-7011) or

Bill McLaughlin (440-234-6362). Get them early, before they’re gone!"

CSM CONGRATULATIONS

to John and Rita Karliak, who are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.

WELCOME HOME (again)

WELCOME HOME (again) to Jerry Sheehan. (Our last CSM Newsletter reported he had attended a Peace Corps reunion in the Philippines, but actually it was a reunion with the students he had taught for three years there at Pompagno High School while he was with the Peace Corps in the late ‘60s. Jerry felt very honored to have been remembered by them. One might ask, "Forget Jerry? Not likely…")

A Message to the Community of St. Malachi from Tammy Domann:

"It is with heartfelt gratitude that I write to thank you for being just what you are, an instrument of Christ. On behalf of Dave Domann and his entire family, thank you for cards, for visits, for prayers and for concern expressed with words of comfort. Dave’s life was made richer by his association with this community. He felt by serving others at Monday Night Meals he was able to fulfill Christ’s request of him to serve others. I’m so thankful you were there for him. Please accept these gifts, given in his name, to help sustain this wonderful program. With love in Christ…Tammy Domann"

A Message from Dave Starre:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE MONDAY NIGHT MEAL PROGRAM…

"Once a month - in two important areas:

1) to cook main dishes (at home)

2) to provide fresh fruits or vegetables ($10-$12 worth)

"The need is greater than ever. Hundreds are fed at each meal and their number is on the increase because of recent welfare cuts.
For details call me at 440-526-3876."  -DS

A Message from Celeste Grunwald:

"Do you have 5-10 minutes after the 11 a.m. Liturgy? Would you like to meet and greet your fellow CSM members? If the answer to one or both of the above is "yes," please call me to volunteer to pass out the CSM Newsletter and/or Communio. We really could use your help! - 440-884-9702" - CG
